Polysomnographic Results before and after Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty

  • Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) is one possibility for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). The aim of this study was study the analysis of polysomnography of pre-UPPP and post-UPPP. All patients were evaluated by means of a physical examination, the epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), the beck depression inventory (BDI) and the nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) before surgery, and 6~12 months after surgery. A total of 15 patients were investigated. All underwent UPPP. The patients were between 26 and 62 years old ($mean{\pm}SD$; $39.7{\pm}10.9$) with a lean body mass index (BMI) of $mean{\pm}SD$; $26.2{\pm}3.0kg/m^2$. The comparison of sleep questionnaires showed that after UPPP, the patients had a significantly lower BMI ($26.2{\pm}3.0kg/m^2$ vs $26.0{\pm}3.4kg/m^2$, p=0.241), ESS ($10.0{\pm}5.4$ vs $6.9{\pm}3.2$, p=0.022), BDI ($9.2{\pm}8.2$ vs $4.2{\pm}4.3$, p=0.343) and higher blood pressure ($127.5{\pm}12.1$ vs $123.7{\pm}12.0$, p=0.272) compared to before UPPP. The comparison of sleep parameters showed that after UPPP, patients had a significantly lower stage N1 ($108.8{\pm}53.1$ vs $82.2{\pm}48.9$, p=0.016), lower sleep latency ($4.9{\pm}4.4$ vs $2.0{\pm}1.7$, p=0.083), a lower total arousal number ($210.6{\pm}90.3$ vs $147.1{\pm}87.3$, p=0.019), lower oxygen desaturation index (ODI) ($30.2{\pm}20.9$ vs $10.2{\pm}15.1$, p=0.006), lower apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ($31.6{\pm}22.4$ vs $10.9{\pm}15.4$, p=0.005), and a lower respiratory disturbance index (RDI) ($37.4{\pm}21.3$ vs $18.5{\pm}16.5$, p=0.008) compared to after UPPP. The comparison of sleep parameters showed that after UPPP, patients had a significantly higher stage N2 ($154.0{\pm}39.9$ vs $180.5{\pm}49.5$, p=0.017), higher REM ($58.5{\pm}29.7$ vs $72.6{\pm}34.0$, p=0.249), higher $meanSaO_2$ ($94.3{\pm}2.0$ vs $95.9{\pm}0.9$, p=0.043), and higher $meanSaO_2$ ($79.3{\pm}8.5$ vs $83.1{\pm}7.9$, p=0.116) than before UPPP. After UPPP, 6 patients were cured, 2 showed marked improvement, and 7 did not improve. After surgery, the success of the treatment was at 53%. The subjective patient satisfaction was higher than before the surgery.

제주도 서식 비단털쥐(Tscherskia triton)의 번식과 발달 (Breeding and Development of the Tscherskia triton in Jeju Island)

  • 중국 북부와 한국, 러시아 지역에 서식하는 비단털쥐(Tscherskia triton)의 분포를 제외한 생활사, 행동, 생태와 관련된 생물학적 특징에 대해서는 거의 연구된 바 없다. 이에 본 연구는 제주도에서 포획된 개체(n=9)를 대상으로 종 단위 연구의 기본이 되는 번식과 성장 및 발달에 대한 생물학적 정보를 밝히기 위하여 2015년 3월부터 2016년 12월까지 사육실에서 진행되었다. 연구결과, 임신률은 31.7%였고 좁은 케이지에서 보다 넓은 케이지에서 더 높게 나타났다(56.7 vs. 6.7%). 임신기간은 $22{\pm}1.6$일(범위 21-27일), 한배의 산자수(litter size)는 $4.26{\pm}1.37$마리(범위 2-7 마리)였다. 최소이유시기는 $19.2{\pm}1.4$일(범위 18-21일)이었다. 출생 직후 새끼의 체중과 외부형태의 크기는 성별로 차이가 없었으나, 이유시기부터 암수의 머리와 몸통길이(HBL)와 꼬리길이(TL)는 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다(HBL-weaning, $106.50{\pm}6.02$ vs. $113.34{\pm}4.72mm$, p<0.05; HBL-4 months, $163.93{\pm}5.42$ vs. $182.83{\pm}4.32mm$, p<0.05; TL-4 months, $107.23{\pm}3.25$ vs. $93.95{\pm}2.15mm$, p<0.05). Gompertz 모형과 logistic 모형을 적용하였을 때, 머리-몸통길이에서는 수컷이 암컷보다 최대 성숙 길이가 길었고($164.840{\pm}7.453$ vs. $182.830{\pm}4.319mm$, p<0.0001; $163.936{\pm}5.415$ vs. $182.840{\pm}4.333mm$, p<0.0001), 성장률도 빨랐으나($1.351{\pm}0.065$ vs. $1.435{\pm}0.085$, p<0.05; $2.870{\pm}0.253$ vs. $3.211{\pm}0.635$, p<0.05), 성장곡선의 기울기가 최대가 되는 일령은 암컷보다 조금 늦었다($5.121{\pm}0.318$ vs. $5.520{\pm}0.333$, p<0.05; $6.884{\pm}0.336$ vs. $7.503{\pm}0.453$, p<0.05). 한편 꼬리의 최대길이($105.695{\pm}5.938$ vs. $94.150{\pm}2.507mm$, p<0.001; $111.609{\pm}14.881$ vs. $93.960{\pm}2.150mm$, p<0.05)와 변곡점에서의 길이($60.306{\pm}1.992$ vs. $67.859{\pm}1.330mm$, p<0.0001; $55.714{\pm}7.458$ vs. $46.975{\pm}1.074mm$, p<0.05)는 암컷이 수컷보다 긴 것으로 나타났다. 두 성장모형에서 암수의 체중과 외부형태형질에 대한 성장률은 비교 결과 유사하였다. 이러한 결과는 비단털쥐의 종적 특징을 밝히는데 필요한 자료로 이용될 것이다.

무담체(無擔體) Pm-147에 관한 연구(硏究) (Studies on Carrier-Free Promethium-147)

  • 본 연구는 무단체 Pm-147 의 농도 및 pH 변화에 대하여 여과과정에서 막여과지(膜濾過紙)에 대한 흡착(吸着)상태를 조사하여 무단체 Pm-147의 용액(溶液)상태에 있어서 화학적(化學的)상태 및 흡착(吸着)상태에서의 Pm-147 의 화학적 상태에 관하여 연구하였다. 이와 아울러 방사능(放射能)물질의 담체(擔體)로 사용되는 $Fe(OH)_3$와의 공심(共沈)상태를 연구하였다. 무단체 Pm-147 수용액(水溶液)에서 $Pm^{3+}$ 상태로 족재하며 막(膜)여과지에 의한 여과과정에서 흡착(吸着)이 일어난다. 흡착상태(吸着狀態)는 pH에 따라 여러가지 이온상태로 존재하고 있다. 즉 pH 5.0까지는 $Pm^{3+}$ 상태로 존재하며 $pH5.0{\sim}6.0$까지는 점차로 $Pm(OH)^{2+}$ 상태로 옮아가며 pH 6.0 이상에서는 $Pm(OH)^{2+}$에서 $Pm(OH)_2^+$, $Pm(OH)_3$ 상태로 흡착(吸着)상태로 흡착상태가 이동한다. $Fe^{3+}$$Pm^{3+}$의 공심(共沈)은 $F(OH)_3$에 대한 $Pm^{3+}$의 흡착이며 높은 pH 및 Fe 담체(擔體)의 양(量)에 따라 $Pm(OH)^{2+}$$Pm(OH)_2^+$등의 상태로 나타나고 있다.

Effect of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 on Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 Expression in Hepatic Carcinoma SMMC7721 Cells through the p38 MAPK Signaling Pathway

  • Objective: To observe the effect of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) on bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2 expression in hepatocellular carcinoma SMMC7721 cells. Methods: Cells were divided into blank control, IGF-1, IGF-1 + SB203580, and SB203580 groups. SB203580 was used to block the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Changes in the expression of BMP-2, p38 MAPK, and phosphorylated p38, MERK, ERK and JNK were determined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) and Western blot analysis. Results: Protein expression of phosphorylated BMP-2, MERK, ERK, and JNK was significantly up-regulated by IGF-1 compared with the control group ($1.138{\pm}0.065$ vs. $0.606{\pm}0.013$, $0.292{\pm}0.005$ vs. $0.150{\pm}0.081$, $0.378{\pm}0.006$ vs. $0.606{\pm}0.013$, and $0.299{\pm}0.015$ vs. $0.196{\pm}0.017$, respectively; P<0.05). Levels of BMP-2 and phosphorylated MERK and JNK were significantly reduced after blocking of the p38MAPK signaling pathway ($0.494{\pm}0.052$ vs. $0.165{\pm}0.017$, $0.073{\pm}0.07$ vs. $0.150{\pm}0.081$, and $0.018{\pm}0.008$ vs. $0.196{\pm}0.017$, respectively; P<0.05), but such a significant difference was not observed for phosphorylated ERK protein expression ($0.173{\pm}0.07$ vs. $0.150{\pm}0.081$, P>0.05). Conclusion: IGF-1 can up-regulate BMP-2 expression, and p38 MAPK signaling pathway blockage can noticeably reduce the up-regulated expression. We can conclude that the up-regulatory effect of IGF-1 on BMP-2 expression is realized through the p38 MAPK signaling pathway.

  • p-Phenylenediamine dihydrobromide 와 p-phenylenediamine dihydrochloride는 isomorphous임을 밝혔다. p-Phenylenediamine dihydrobromide는 三斜軸晶系(三斜晶系)에 屬하며 cell dimension 은 $a=4.52{\pm}0.02,\;b=6.13{\pm}0.02,\;c=8.88{\pm}0.03{\AA},\;{\alpha}=111{\pm}1^{\circ},\;{\beta}=97{\pm}1^{\circ},\;{\gamma}=101{\pm}1^{\circ}$ 이며 單位細胞(單位格子)속에 들어있는 化學單位數는 1이다. 이 物質의 結晶構造가 3結晶軸에 따라 投影한 電子密度에 依하여 決定되었으며 二次元的인 Fourier synthesis에 依하여 精密化하였다.

Evaluation of the Quality of Beef Patties Formulated with Dried Pumpkin Pulp and Seed

  • The objective of this study was to investigate quality attributes of beef patties formulated with dried pumpkin pulp and seed mixture (PM). Four different meatball formulations were prepared where lean was replaced with PM as C (0% PM), P2 (2% PM), P3 (3% PM) and P5 (5% PM). Utilization of PM decreased moisture and increased ash content of the patties. Incorporation of 5% PM (P5) increased the pH value of both uncooked and cooked patties compared to C group. Increasing levels of PM increased water-holding capacity. No significant differences were found in cooking yield and diameter change with the addition of PM. Incorporation of PM increased fat and decreased moisture retention of the samples. $a^*$ values were decreased with PM addition, where $L^*$ values did not differ among treatments and $b^*$ values were similar in C, P3 and P5 samples. Textural properties were mostly equivalent to control samples with the incorporation of PM even at higher concentrations. The addition of PM did not significantly affect any of the sensory scores tested. These results indicated that utilization of PM presents the opportunity to decrease the amount of meat besides to improve healthier profile without causing negative changes in physical, chemical and technological quality of beef patties.

흰쥐의 신허혈에서 HPLC를 이용한 핵산대사산물의 분석 (Analysis of Nucleotides and Their Derivatives in Renal Tissue of Rat during Ischemia by HPLC)

  • 흰쥐 신동맥 결찰로 허혈을 유도하여 허혈상태의 핵산 및 핵산 대사산물의 변화가 정상조직과 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 알아 보기 위하여 HPLC(high performance liquid chromatography)를 이용하여 nucleotides를 분리하고 분석 및 정량한 결과이다. 60분간의 허혈후 핵산 및 핵산 대사산물의 변화를 보면 조직 1 gram당의 IDP농도는 대조군 $217.4{\pm}12.68{\mu}g$에서 $80.7{\pm}18.39{\mu}g$으로(P<0.01), ATP는 $307.2{\pm}56.63{\mu}g$에서 $47.6{\pm}5.95{\mu}g$으로(P<0.01), ADP+AMP는 $227.1{\pm}7.98{\mu}g$에서 $61.4{\pm}3.92{\mu}g$으로(P<0.01), $NAD^+$ $217.9{\pm}4.49{\mu}g$에서 $126.6{\pm}10.44{\mu}g$으로(P<0.01), GTP는 $202.5{\pm}23.76{\mu}g$에서 $117.7{\pm}14.24{\mu}g$으로(P<0.05), GMP는 $54.5{\pm}9.03{\mu}g$에서 $23.7{\pm}0.46{\mu}g$으로(P<0.05), 그리고 inosine은 $16.6{\pm}3.45{\mu}g$에서 $7.8{\pm}0.87{\mu}g$으로(P<0.05) 유의하게 감소한 반면, hypoxanthine은 $113.0{\pm}15.58{\mu}g$에서 $159.7{\pm}12.07{\mu}g$으로(P<0.05), xanthine은 $87.7{\pm}6.77{\mu}g$에서 $173.1{\pm}12.52{\mu}g$으로(P<0.01) 유의하게 증가하였다. 허혈의 지속시간에 따른 변화는 ATP가 10분에 대조군의 39.9%, 30분에 19.8% 그리고 60분에 15.5%로 감소하였으며, ADP+AMP는 10분에 70.3%, 30분에 67.3%, 60분에 27.0%로 감소하는 경향이었고, hypoxanthine과 xanthine은 각각 10분에 121.5%와 127.1%로, 30분에 126.0%와 174.4%로, 그리고 60분에 141.4%와 197.3%로 증가하는 경향이었다. 허혈 60분동안 고 에너지원인 adenosine nucleotide의 총량은 대조군의 20.3%로 감소하였고, purine nucleotide의 대사산물인 hypoxanthine과 xanthine의 총량은 157.5%로 증가하였다. 이상의 결과로 보아 쥐의 허혈 신조직에서의 핵산 및 그 대사산물의 농도는 허혈의 정도를 알 수 있는 유용한 지표라고 생각된다.

2상 혐기성 소화에서 음식물쓰레기의 고온 가용화 전처리 pH 영향 (pH Effect at Thermophilic Solubilization Pretreatment of Food Waste in Two Phase Anaerobic Digestion)

  • 본 연구는 음식물쓰레기의 2상 혐기성 소화에서 메탄가스 발생량을 높이기 위해 고온 가용화 전처리시 pH를 $7.00{\pm}0.50$으로 조정하여 대조군과 비교하였다. pH에 따른 가용화 효율 회분식(Batch) 실험에서 pH가 $4.20{\pm}0.40$ (pH를 조절하지 않은 것)에서부터 $7.00{\pm}0.50$, $12.00{\pm}0.50$으로 증가시킴에 따라 가용화 효율도 각각 26.2, 47.1, 55.6%로 높게 나타났다. 그러나 pH를 $7.00{\pm}0.50$에서 $12.00{\pm}0.50$으로 증가시켰을 때 가용화 효율은 8.5%증가로 큰 차이가 없었다. 실험실규모 2상 혐기성 소화시스템은 가용화 조건에서 pH를 조절하지 않은 Run1 (pH $4.20{\pm}0.40$)과 pH를 $7.00{\pm}0.50$으로 조절한 Run2로 나누어 운전되었다. pH $7.00{\pm}0.50$의 가용화에 의해 Run2시스템에서 전반적으로 높은 SCOD 및 TVFA농도가 측정되었다. 산생성조에서 TVFA농도는 18.4 g/L로 Run1보다 1.8배 높은 결과를 나타내었다. 그 결과 메탄생성조에서 메탄가스 발생량은 0.333 L/gVS로 Run1의 0.282 L/gVS과 비교하여 18% 향상되었다.

Growth, Flowering, and Nutrient Composition of Salvia Grown in Peat moss Media Containing Pellets Processed with Poultry Feather Fibers at Different Mixing Ratios

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of replacing perlite (PL) with pellets processed with poultry feather fiber as an inert material to prepare growing medium. The growth and flowering of Salvia splendens 'Vista Red' grown in individual growing medium $Biosangto^{(R)}$, peat moss (PM), PL, and two pellets (P45-1 and P45-2) were evaluated. Peat moss was mixed with PL, P45-1, or P45-2 at various ratios (1:0 to 1:3 or 3:1 by volume) to investigate the feasibility of replacing PL with pellets. Nutrient composition of the growing medium and leaf tissues was analyzed. The number of florets, inflorescence length, plant height, and fresh weight of plants grown in media containing P45-1 or P45-2 were reduced compared to those grown in individual growing medium PM or PL. As the mixing ratio of P45-1 or P45-2 to PM was higher, the growth of salvia, such as inflorescence length, plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight was inhibited. Our results indicate that mixing three parts PM with one part of P45-1 (PM/P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM/P45-2/3:1) accelerated flowering and increased the number of florets and leaves compared to other mixing ratios of PM and pellets media. The concentrations of phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), boron (B), iron (Fe), and copper (Cu) in individual growing medium PL, P45-1, and P45-2 were significantly lower than those in PM. The concentration of N was the highest in leaves of plants grown in P45-1 or P45-2 amended media, and the concentrations of P, Ca, and zinc (Zn) in leaves were lower in individual growing medium P45-1 or P45-2 than in PM and PL. The pH of PM/P45-1/3:1 or PM/P45-2/3:1 media was maintained at optimal level (5.8-5.9) and the concentrations of macro- and micro-elements in the media and leaves were considered to be optimal levels. Therefore, mixing three parts PM with one part P45-1(PM:P45-1/3:1) or P45-2 (PM:P45-2/3:1) is recommended for improved growth and flowering in salvia. This suggests that P45-1 or P45-2 can replace PL as an inert material to prepare growing medium.

비만에 이환된 아동청소년에서 보이는 정신건강문제 (Mental Health Problems in Child and Adolescent Obesity)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate mental health problems in obese child and adolescent patients. We assess the frequency of mental health problems and their differences according to sex, school grade and severity of obesity. Methods: The sample consisted of 106 children and adolescents aged 8-16 years (61 boys with mean age $10.98{\pm}2.26$, 45 girls with mean age $9.74{\pm}1.96$, p=.004) who were diagnosed with obesity and recruited at the Department of Pediatrics of Jeju National University Hospital. The participants completed the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Korean version of the Eating Attitude Test-26 (KEAT-26), and somatotype drawings. Results: The percentage of participants having a T-score in clinical range on one or more CBCL subscale was 37.7%. The percentage of participants in the high risk group for depression (CDI score above 17) was 20.8% and that in the high risk group for eating disorder (EAT-26 score above 20) was 6%. The girls showed significantly lower CBCL T-scores in social competence ($48.39{\pm}15.66$ vs. $38.91{\pm}22.04$, p=.011), adjustment function ($49.51{\pm}17.35$ vs. $40.38{\pm}22.58$, p=.020) and school competence ($53.34{\pm}10.47$ vs. $48.22{\pm}15.11$, p=.042) than the boys, but the percentages of boys and girls in clinical range were not significantly different. The middle school students showed (significantly) higher CBCL T-scores in somatic symptoms ($60.86{\pm}9.44$ vs. $55.74{\pm}6.76$, p=.005), aggressive behavior ($58.81{\pm}6.74$ vs. $54.68{\pm}6.22$, p=.009), total problems ($59.86{\pm}9.91$ vs. $54.88{\pm}9.76$, p=.039) and externalizing problems ($57.90{\pm}10.57$ vs. $52.44{\pm}9.38$, p=.022) than the elementary school students. The severe obesity group showed significantly higher CBCL T-scores in attention problems ($59.18{\pm}9.45$ vs. $54.15{\pm}5.34$, p=.001), social problems ($59.25{\pm}8.59$ vs. $55.96{\pm}6.50$, p=.038), delinquent behavior ($58.07{\pm}6.97$ vs. $54.73{\pm}6.00$, p=.017) and total problems ($59.21{\pm}11.65$ vs. $54.67{\pm}9.03$, p=.037) than the mild to moderate obesity group. Conclusion: Significant proportions of obese children and adolescents suffer from mental health problems. Clinicians need to pay attention to the mental health risk, especially in obese adolescents and severely obese children and adolescents.
