  • The purpose of this study was to investigate thermal stability, reactivity, and bonding strength of existing epoxy resin mixed with the epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) in order to use soybean oil economically. In the dry shear test, the marked strengths showed $30.5kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio of ESBO to epoxy resin 9 : 1 and $6.2kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio 8 : 2. The bonding strengths of the others, except mixing ratios 2 : 8 and 1 : 9, exceeded the requirement of Korean plywood standard of $7.0kgf/cm^2$. In the wet shear test, the result was $5.8kgf/cm^2$ at the ratio 9 : 1. There were no thickness swelling and moisture absorption in the water resistance of the film. The value of activation energy, Tg (${\Delta}E$), by DSC analysis showed between $110^{\circ}C$ and $120^{\circ}C$ through all ratios. Epoxy in the epoxy resin fully reacted with the hardener (TETA), but it is difficult to decide that epoxys in the ESBO were reacted directly with the hardener from FT-IR analysis. As the mixing ratio of ESBO increased, the thermal stabilities dropped from TGA analysis. From the comprehensive view on the results of above experiments, it could be confirmed through experiments that the ESBO in the mixed adhesive of epoxy resin/ESBO played a role as an extending agent level of epoxy adhesive, and we were able to know that in order to utilize ESBO as an adhesive, a study should be performed on the condition of hardening, inducible of the hardening reaction.

  • 1. Object and importance of the research. The exports of plywood are increasing annually and it has ranked first in the world market because of the high quality product developed and manufactured using modern techniques. However, it is known that the exports of the other wood products, except plywood, is inactive because of their low quality. Accordingly, to increase the exports of various wood products investigations were carried out on kiln drying techniques to improve the quality of the wood. 2. The details and scope of the research Wet wood should be kiln dried before use to prevent various drying defects such as distortion, shrinkage etc, which would develop after processing, and also wet wood is not suitable for cutting, gluing and finishing. Therefore, the kiln drying properties of lumber from such species as Persimmon, Oak, Ramin and Meranti which are used in large quantity for manufacturing exporting wood products have been studied. Also the real state of kiln drying industry in Korea was investigated. 3. • The yellow poplar is an appropriate species for the age of low carbon green growth, because its absorption rates of ozone is greatly excellent, and also the absorption rates of carbon dioxide causing climate changes is very remarkable. The yellow poplar, which is a kind of rapid growth tree, shows a lack of performance as a structural member, however, it is suitable to use a variety of purposes like furniture materials, interior materials, plywood materials, and so on. In this study, the structural size skin-timbers were made by using the yellow poplar, and the compressive capacity was evaluated, also the numerical model was developed for the various uses. The rectangular shape skin-timber presented a good performance by showing 56.3% residual strength about the solid material. In case of the cylinder shape skin-timber showed a possibility to use diversely as a furniture material, as well as a structural uses, because almost 50% compressive capacity of material even though its residual area rates was 25%. Both rectangular shape and the cylinder shape represented that 'Brooming or end rolling' were the major failure mode, and partly splitting failure mode. The compressive capacity of the rectangular shape which residual area rates was large was higher than the cylinder shape, but it did not show statistical significance about the compressive capacity between them. Thus, it will be possible to use them mixed for a convenience of users. The result of the numerical analysis model was quite similar to actual test of the compressive capacity. Therefore, the yellow poplar can be utilized in the development of various uses by applying numerical analysis model about a variety of shapes and dimensions.

  • This study examined the impacts of tariff reductions on timber products in the new round of WTO negotiations on domestic timber products markets and presented the measures to minimize their impacts. Scenarios on reductions in tariffs were developed based on result of UR negotiation and prospective issues on scope of tariffs bound, base rates for negotiation, degree of tariff cuts, etc. emerged during preparatory meetings held to launch the New Round of WTO Negotiation. Korea Timber Market Model(KORTIMM) developed by Korea Forest Research Institute was used to simulate the impacts on forest products markets by scenario. It was estimated that their impacts on net imports would be much larger than those on both consumption and production. The results showed that their impacts on plywood market and on net imports of processed forest products would be much larger relatively but that their impacts on log market and on consumption and production of processed forest products would be less than 1 percent. It was estimated that log consumption would be reduced due to reduction in domestic production of processed products and thus both production and imports of logs would be reduced as well. In oder to minimize the impacts, efforts should be made to start negotiations to reduce tariffs with bound rates for bounded products and with applied rates for non-bounded products, to expand the implementation period and to maintain the status of developing country. In addition, it might be one of countermeasures to use legitimate measures consistent with WTO rules such as anti-dumping, countervailing measures and safeguards.

  • Appropriate evaluation of thermal insulation property of structural member and valid control of cooling/heating energy are important for improving building's energy efficiency. The typical heating system of house in Korea is the floor heating one. The radiation heating system is not only appropriate to climate and geographic conditions of Korea, but also advantageous to provide emotional comfort by the warm feeling of floor. Based on living conditions in Korea, scaled models of the wooden house and concrete house were designed. The ceiling was made of styrofoam insulation and the four sided walls and bottom were made of plywood and concrete, respectively. The floor was heated by heating film. Indoor vertical temperature distributions by floor heating system were measured by thermocouple, and surface temperatures on walls were measured by infrared thermography. Also, thermal insulation property of wooden wall was evaluated to build database for improving energy efficiency of wooden building. It is expected that collected data during tests of various types of floor and wall composition could be referenced for evaluating thermal environment of actual conditions of houses.

  • This study was carried out to examine the possibility to replace imported wheat flour with taro. Taro and wheat flour were used for the extenders after oven drying($100{\pm}3^{\circ}C$)and pulverized into 80-100mesh minute powder by laboratory willey mill. Urea- and phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives were used for plywood manufacture, and the extending materials mixed with the extension at the ratio of 10, 20, 30, and 50% to each resin solution. The results obtained at this study were summarized as follows; 1) In dry and wet shear strength of urea-formaldehyde resin adhesive, taro showed very excellent bonding strength compared with wheat flour in all extending ratio. Therefore taro showed the possibility that be usable to taro in place of wheat flour. 2) In dry and wet shear strength of phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesive, in general, wheat flour showed higher bonding strength than taro. But in dry shear strength, taro showed higher shear strength than wheat flour in 30 and 50% extension.

  • This study was analyzed the changes of the tariff reduction for the timber products according to the modalities proposed by the chairman of Non-agriculture Market Access. The resulted data would be expected to be used for establishing the strategies for the WTO/DDA negotiation of Korea. As WTO/DDA negotiation was officially resumed in the early 2007. It was necessarily required to develop a strategy how to address debating core issues raised during the negotiation since 2006. For this purpose, major core issues and agenda were arranged and analyzed in this study. In Korea, the results of the analysis show that, in the position of developed members, the applicable tariff rates after the tariff reduction of sawnwood and veneer sheet was not different from that in 2007. However, in the position of developing members, the applicable tariff rate of sawnwood and veneer sheet was increased after the tariff reduction. The unbound tariff lines, wood-based panels such as plywood and medium-density fiberboard, the applicable tariff rate after the tariff reduction was analyzed to be reduced more than 50% in the position of developed members, and therefore is determined to be considerable influenced upon the applicable tariff rates. On the other hand, in the position of developing country the tariff rates after the tariff reduction was higher than that of the applicable tariff rates in 2007. Thus no changes of the tariff reduction by a negotiation agreement was analyzed to be happened.

  • The main purpose of this study is to provide informations by comparing and analyzing tariff structures for the upcoming FTA negotiation between Korea and China. China is the biggest trade partner of Korea, sharing 33% of total trade value of forest products. However, import takes majority of trade value and it grows constantly. The results of FTA negotiation may have large impacts on Korean forest industry. The conclusions indicate that China subdivides items more complicatedly, and impose lower tariffs on forest products except stone than Korea. Besides, China has tariff escalation system that imposes lower duties on raw material than the manufactured, and also charges different rates of tariff on items of the same heading number according to the degrees of manufacturing. Furthermore, Korea imposes adjustment duties and didn't grant concessions on plywood and board items for protection of domestic industries, however, China already made concessions on all items. As a result of this, it will be unavoidable for Korea to increase import value from China, and tariff removal will have more negative impacts on Korea than China.

  • With the amendment to the Building Act in November of 2005 that offered incentives in terms of floor area ratio and number of stories to apartment buildings adopting the Rahmen structure to facilitate remodeling, the construction industry is paying more attention to PC structures. As connections between PC columns and beams require complex design, it is very difficult to install and remove forms. Since forms made of plywood for such connections are fabricated and installed on site, a significant amount of labor is required, and constructability is low. Furthermore, after concrete casting, the forms are removed in a state in which they cannot be recycled, which leads to a significant amount of construction waste. For this reason, a solution to address such issues needs to be studied. However, many researchers have focused only on the structural performance of PC structures in Korea and elsewhere, ignoring the need for research on the forms used in building PC structure connections. Therefore, this research aims to develop a form that can improve the productivity of PC structure connection construction, and compare it with conventional forms to highlight its contribution to gains in productivity and economic viability.
