Hydraulic stability at the head of rubble mound breakwater around the entrance harbour (항로 주변의 사석경사제 제두부의 수리학적 특성 연구)

  • The failure at the head section of rubble mound breakwaters is more important than other failure modes. because this initial failures will occur the failure of the trunk section and lead to the instability of the structure. The three-dimensional failure modes are discussed using the experimental data with multi-directional waves considering the failure modes. It was occurred by the topographical characteristics around the head of rubble mound breakwater. The spacial characteristics of failure mode around the rubble-mound structures can be summarized as follows: 1) It was clarified that the failure modes at the round head of a detached breakwater are classified as failure by plunging breaker on the slope, failure by direct incident wave force and failure at the rubble mound breakwaters. 2) The failure mode was found in the lower wave height than the design wave by the breaker depth effects and topography around structures. It is clarified that the structure was monitored safely designed for the design wave but the failure was occurred by the reason of breaker waves.

The three-dimensional failure modes are discussed using the experimental data with multi-directional waves considering the failure modes occurring around the head of the rubble-mound detached breakwater. The spacial characteristics of failure mode around the rubble-mound structures can be summarized as follows: 1) It was clarified that the failure modes at the round head of a detached breakwater are classified as failure by plunging breaker on the slope, failure by direct incident wave force and failure by scouring at the toe of the detached breakwater. 2) The failure mode was found in the lower wave height than the design wave by the breaker depth effects. It is clarified that the structure monitored was safely designed for the design wave but the failure was occurred by the reason of breaker waves and scouring processes at the toe 3) It was observed that scouring at the toe developed in the region where steady stream due to vorticity was generated and the spatial variation of scour at the toe of the round head was predominated by incident wave direction.

  • The Sectional and Spatial failure modes are discussed using the experimental data with long crest wave and multi-directional waves considering the failure modes occurring around the rubble-mound breakwater. The spatial & sectional stability and failure mode around the rubble-mound structures with construction progress can be summarized as follows: 1) The rubble mound structures at basic construction step was occurred serious failures when ${\xi}$ was about 6.5. 2) It was clarified that the failure modes at the round head of detached breakwater are classified as failure by plunging breaking on the slope, failure by direct incident wave force and failure by scouring at the toe of the detached break water. 3) The failure mode was found in the lower wave height than the design wave by the breaker depth effect. 4) The failure on the slope were also developed at the lee side of the round head because diffracted wave propagated into the behind area by grouping effect of multi-directional irregular wave.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of hospice nurses on spiritual care. Methods: Data was collected from 9 hospice nurses by using in-depth interview. The main questions include what they understand as spiritual care, when they feel the needs of spiritual care, how they perform spiritual care, and what is the outcome of spiritual care. The data was analyzed by grounded theory methodology developed by Strauss and Corbin. Results: The core category of experience of hospice nurses on spiritual care was identified as "Untie a knot of mind". In the process of spiritual care in hospice nurses was consisted of soothing, dwelling with, releasing, giving meaning, plunging, and going beyond a life. Conclusion: The result of this study was expected to give useful information to nurses and nursing managers about the real situation of performance of spiritual care. The findings of this study contributes to developing programs and supportive policies for encouraging spiritual care.

  • Since its invention at TWI in 1991, Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has become a major joining process in the aerospace, railway and ship building industries especially in the fabrication of aluminium alloys. In an attempt to optimize the friction stir welding process of Al alloys for extrusion Aluminium carbody of HEMU-400X (Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series), effects of joining parameters such as tool rotating speed, plunging depth and dwelling time on the weld joints properties were evaluated. Experimental tests were carried out for butt joined Al plates. A wide range of joining conditions could be applied to join Al alloys for Extrusion Aluminum 6xxx series without defects in the weld zone except for certain welding conditions with an insufficient heat input. The microstructures of welds have dynamic-recrystallized grain similar to stir zone in FSW weld. For sound joints without defects, at the rotation speed of 700 rpm with different welding speeds, the tensile strengths of the Stir Zone(SZ) were almost the same, 80% of those of the base metal.   • This study proposes a numerical model which is able to simulate turbidity currents intruding into a reservoir and resulting sediment depositions. The proposed model is applied to laboratory experiments by Toniolo and Schultz (2005), and propagation of turbidity currents, morphological change, and trap of suspended sediment are simulated. It is simulated that the turbidity current after plunging at the foreset of the model delta, propagates along the bottom. The thickness of the turbidity current increases significantly after being blocked by the dam, and this effect is propagated in the upstream direction. In addition, it is simulated that the foreset moves in the downstream direction due to both the bedload and suspended load and the thickness of the bottom set increases due to the suspended load. It is found that the height of the intake affects the thickness of the turbidity current and the location of the internal hydraulic jump. The impact of the height of the intake on the trap efficiency is not clear in the experimental results, however, overall trap efficiency is predicted quite successfully by the model. Also, sensitivity analysis is carried out, and the results indicates that the particle size affects the trap efficiency most.

An Experimental Study on The Uncertainty of Suspended Sediment Pickup on Slope by Solitary Wave (고립파에 의한 경사면에서의 부유사 제승의 불확실성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Suspended sediment transport plays principal roles in morphological process of natural coastals. It is needed to understand the reason why interaction characteristics of solitary wave and suspended sediment. The present study shows that suspended sediment pickup derived on solitary wave celerity. The 2D prismatic open channel length is 12 m, width is 0.8 m, height is 0.75 m and slope is 1/6. Generation of solitary wave is used by rapidly opening the sluice gate. Bottom surface sediments are laid movable slope section by 0.03 m thickness and experimental sediments are used anathracite and jumoonjin sand. Techniques of suspended sediment pickup rate are designed equipment ASC(Absorptive Suspended sediment Collector). It could directly absorb 5 points suspended sediment by channel water depth. Solitary wave celerity is measued by ADV(Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter). Mounted two video cameras(Model No. : Sony, HDR-XR550) are used to image processing of suspended sediment concentration and turbidity. Suspended sediment pikcup rate(Einstein, 1950) is analyzed to nondimensionalization based on solitary wave celerity. The suspended sediment pickup rate is suggested that more effective plunging breaking type than spilling. The results indicates fundamental suspended sediment transport mechanism between solitary wave celerity and suspended sediment pickup based on laboratory experiments. Finally, the present study suggests that suspended sediment pickup rate by solitary wave is used only characteristics of sediment and solitary wave celerity.

Grounded Theoretical Approach to the Life of Mothers as a Caretaker of Children with a Severe Disability (중증장애 자녀를 돌보는 어머니의 삶의 과정에 대한 근거이론적 접근)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore process of life experience for mothers of children with severe disabilities. Strauss and Corbin's Grounded theory approach was used. Total 17 mothers who have experience of caring for severely disabled child participated. In-depth interviews was done from January 2010 to May 2011. Three to seven interviews were done for each participant. As a result of this study, 119 concepts, 41 subordinate categories and 20 categories have been revealed. The experience of caring children with severe disabilities were 'desolate life' 'plunging in darkness' 'managing to pull oneself' 'rising again' and 'rediscovering of life'. The core category of selective coding was rediscovering of new life from life in darkness. It is suggested that welfare policies need to be modified and new policies need to established for mothers who care for severely disabled children.

Experimental Study of Overtopping Void Ratio by Wave Breaking (쇄파에 의한 월파의 기포분율에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The aeration of an overtopping wave on a vertical structure generated by a plunging wave was investigated through laboratory measurements of void fraction. The overtopping wave occurring after wave breaking becomes multi-phased and turbulent with significant aeration, so that the void fraction of the flow is of importance. In this study, fiber optic reflectometer and bubble image velocimetry were employed to measure the void fraction, velocity, and layer thickness of the overtopping flow. Mean properties were obtained by ensembleand time-averaging the repeated instantaneous void fractions and velocities. The mean void fractions show that the overtopping wave is very high-aerated near the overtopping wave front and relatively low-aerated near the deck surface and rear free surface of the wave. The flow rate and momentum of the overtopping flow estimated using the measured data show that the void ratio is an important parameter to consider in the multiphase flow. From the similarity profiles of the depth-averaged void fraction, velocity, and layer thickness, one-dimensional empirical equations were obtained and used to estimate the flow rate and momentum of the overtopping flow.

Dynamics of High Turbid Water Caused by Heavy Rain of Monsoon and Typhoon in a Large Korean Reservoir (Andong Reservoir) (인공호에서 몬순과 태풍 강우에 의한 고탁수층의 이동과 소멸특성)

  • During the period of heavy rain from 2002 to 2004, the characteristics of the inflow, temporal and spatial fluctuations of high turbid water according to thermal stratification were studied on the Andong Reservoir which is the largest artificial lake in the Nakdong River basin, Korea. Thermal stratification was formed in June. Its structure determined to the pathway of inflowing turbid water and has affected by the transportation of high turbid water. Regardless of the time and amount of inflow, the high turbid water showed the shape of underflow at the riverine zone, separated from the bottom at the transition zone and moved to the lacustrine zone with the shape of density current. The plunging point depended on the time and amount of inflow. The distributions of thermal stratification and DO concentrations were changed by inflowing discharge. Two thermoclines and minimum DO layers were found out existing at metalimnion in a specific time, respectively. The layer of high turbid water which formed with the thickness of 20 m at the maximum below the depth of 15 m moved toward dam. Not settled to the bottom, the newly formed layer was discharged through the intake-outlet and dispersed into all layers by the circulation in the fall.
