The infrared radiation of exhaust plume was investigated numerically by a finite volume method (FVM) with anisotropic scattering particles. The exhaust plume is considered to absorb, emit and scatter radiant energy isotropically as well as anisotropically. The spatial and spectral distribution characteristics were obtained for the detection wavelength with $2.7{\mu}m$. The radiative intensities were presented for the different detective direction.
The thermal contamination of the Younggwang coastal marine ecosystem has been investigated using space borne thermal infrared data acquired over the period 1985-2003 by the Landsat and NOAA satellites. The analysis of AVHRR data brought out the general pattern and extension of thermal plume while TM data yielded more accurate information about the plume shape, dimension, dispersion direction etc. The examination of sea surface temperature (SST) computed from these images clearly indicates that the thermal plume extends 70 to100km southward during summer and 50 to70km northwestward during winter monsoons. The maximum plume temperature was 29$^{\circ}C$ in summer and 12$^{\circ}C$ in winter. The comparative analysis shows that the temperature retrieved from TM is slightly higher (1.8$^{\circ}C$, 3$^{\circ}C$ and 2.2$^{\circ}C$ for the images of 98/11/10, 99/05/05 and 99/05/21 respectively) than those derived from AVHRR data. The correlation coefficient between the TM-derived SST and AVHRR-derived SST was 0.72.

We report a realistic field-performance simulation for a new MWIR camera. It is designed for early detection of missile plumes over a distance range of a few hundred kilometers. Both imaging and radiometric performance of the camera are studied by using real-scale integrated ray tracing, including targets, atmosphere, and background scene models. The simulation results demonstrate that the camera would satisfy the imaging and radiometric performance requirements for field operation.
Moths have a well-developed sex pheromone communication system. Male moths exhibit an extremely sensitive and selective sex pheromone detection system so that they can detect the sex pheromone produced by conspecific females and locate them for successful mating. Using the pheromone detection system, male moths display characteristic stereotypic behavioral responses, flying upwind to follow intermittent filamentous pheromone strands in pheromone plume. The chemical composition of female sex pheromone in moths, typically comprised of multiple compounds, is species-specific. Male moths contain specialized pheromone receptor neurons on the antennae to detect conspecific sex pheromone accurately, and distinguish it from the pheromones produced by other species. The signals from pheromone receptor neurons are integrated and induce relevant behavior from the male moths. Male moths also contain olfactory sensory neurons in pheromone sensilla, specialized for pheromone-related behavioral antagonist compounds, which can enhance discrimination between conspecific and heterospecific pheromones. Here we review reports on the sex pheromone detection system in male moths and their related responses, and suggest future research direction.

For the combat survivability, an infrared signature emitted from aircraft is needed to be predicted and analyzed. In this study, we studied the infrared signature from the exhaust plume from the viewpoint of Infrared(IR) detector. The Line-By-Line method using the radiation database is used for radiative property, and radiative intensity analysis is conducted along 1-D line of sight based on the radiative property. The numerical thermo-fluid field for the plume is conducted by ANSYS FLUENT, while setting the lines of sight having the different detection angle on the thermo-fluid field. We found the high IR signature on the line of sight passing through the locally high temperature region of the plume inside, and the strongest signature from the line of sight toward the nozzle surface. Based on this, it confirms the influence of the surface radiative emission on the infrared signature.

Infrared signature of rocket plume plays an important role for detection, recognition, tracking and minimzing for low observability. Infrared signatures of rocket plume with reduced smoke propellant and smokeless propellant are measured. In order to estimate the infrared signature of rocket plume, CFD analysis for flow structure of plume is performed, and layered integration method for estimating of infrared signature is used. Numerical and experimental results were in good agreement. Both propellants had similar infrared signature. Strong peak at $4.3{\mu}m$ region in the experimental results is appeared due to experimental error arising from the calibration procedure.

As a preliminary study for detection techniques of $CO_2$ gas bubble plumes, we have conducted a comparative experiment on artificially generated $CO_2$ gas bubbles plume by using multibeam echosounder (MBES), single beam echosounder (SBES), and sub-bottom profiler (SBP). The rising speed of artificial gas bubbles is higher than references because of compulsory release of compressed gas in the tank. Compared to single beam acoustic equipments, the MBES detects wide swath coverage. It provides exact determination of the source position and 3D information on the gas bubble plumes in the water column. Therefore, it is shown that MBES can distinctly detect gas bubble plumes compared to single beam acoustic equipments. We can establish more effective complementary detection technique by simultaneous operation of MBES and SBES. Consequently, it contributes to improve qualitative and quantitative detection techniques by understanding the acoustic characteristics of the specific gas bubbles.
As unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology grew in popularity over the years, it was introduced for air quality monitoring. This can easily be used to estimate the sidewalk emission concentration by calculating road traffic emission factors of different vehicle types. These calculations require a simulation of the spread of pollutants from one or more sources given for estimation. For this purpose, a Gaussian plume dispersion model was developed based on the US EPA Motor Vehicle Emissions Simulator (MOVES), which provides an accurate estimate of fuel consumption and pollutant emissions from vehicles under a wide range of user-defined conditions. This paper describes a methodology for estimating emission concentration on the sidewalk emitted by different types of vehicles. This line source considers vehicle parameters, wind speed and direction, and pollutant concentration using a UAV equipped with a monocular camera. All were sampled over an hourly interval. In this article, the YOLOv5 deep learning model is developed, vehicle tracking is used through Deep SORT (Simple Online and Realtime Tracking), vehicle localization using a homography transformation matrix to locate each vehicle and calculate the parameters of speed and acceleration, and ultimately a Gaussian plume dispersion model was developed to estimate the CO, NOx concentrations at a sidewalk point. The results demonstrate that these estimated pollutants values are good to give a fast and reasonable indication for any near road receptor point using a cheap UAV without installing air monitoring stations along the road.
Directly searching for undiscovered hydrothermal vent sites is inefficient due to the practical difficulty of comprehensively imaging vent fields. Thus, most searches for hydrothermal vent sites rely on the detection of hydrothermal plumes from water column observation. Detecting and measuring the hydrothermal plumes are the most efficient way to infer the presence and distribution of hydrothermal vents. Both the array of vertical casting and lateral towing are the most common methods to discover hydrothermal plumes. In this study, we compared results of cast and tow-yo operations along the same section of a spreading center with a distance of 20.5 km in the North Fiji Basin for mapping hydrothermal plumes. Operation of CTD tow-yo provides a detailed pattern of plumes which enable us to locate the hydrothermal vents. On the other hand, identification of hydrothermal activity can be determined effectively by CTD cast with additional analysis of geochemical tracers. Reduction in the operating time is another advantage of CTD cast operation, especially for regional-scale survey. Our results show that the combination of CTD cast and tow-yo would improve the efficiency of the hydrothermal plume survey to locate new hydrothermal vent sites.
