  • Evaluation of turbulence models is performed for a better prediction of thermal stratification in an upper plenum of a liquid metal reactor by applying them to the experiment conducted at JNC. The turbulence models tested in the present study are the two-layer model, the $\kappa-\omega$ model, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model. When the algebraic flux model or differential flux model are used for treating the turbulent heat flux, there exist little differences between turbulence models in predicting the temporal variation of temperature. However, the v2-f model and the low-Reynolds number differential stress-flux model better predict the steep gradient o( temperature at the interface of thermal stratification, and only the v2-f model predicts properly the oscillation of temperature. The LES Is needed for a better prediction of the amplitude and frequency of the temperature fluctuation.

  • Supersonic jet impingement on a flat plate has been investigated to show the flow physics for different jet heights and to demonstrate the adequacy of the characteristics-based flux-difference Wavier-Stokes code Current study also compares the steady-state solutions obtained with variable CFL number for different grid spacing with the time-accurate unsteady solutions using the inner iterations, displaying a good agreement between the two sets of numerical solutions. The unsteady nature of wall fluctuations due to bouncing of the plate shock is also uncovered for high pressure ratios. The methodology is then applied to a complex vertical launcher system where the jet plume hits the bottom wail, deflects into the plenum and eventually exits through the vertical uptake. Flow structures within vertical launcher system are captured and solutions are partially verified against the flight test data. Present jet impingement study thus shows the usefulness of CFD in designing a complex structure and predicting flow behavior within such a system.

  • In this paper, the new algorithm which eliminates structural noise and extracts the impact signature from the measured vibration signal is developed. We studied how the transient vibration signal due to the impact is distorted while propagating through the structure. Also the characteristics of noise generated by flow and the mechanical components are analyzed. The developed method is verified in the model plenum and the flow system in the laboratory. Results show the significant improvement in the sensitivity and accuracy.

  • In operating test of medium speed diesel engine, the large noise over 110dBA would be occurred, and silencer should be needed to prevent the transmission of noise through exhaust duct. A near neighborhood of medium speed engine test shop, outbreak of low frequency noise was reported. From the result of noise measurement, it was found that the coupling of engine noise and air column between workshops was main cause of annoying low frequency noise. From this study, 3 ways of reformation methods were proposed; insertion of plenum chamber, placement of baffles, and alteration of direction of exhaust. As a result of these modification, low frequency noise was cancelled out.

  • In this study, the simulation program for the prediction of volumetric efficiency of the internal combustion engine by the resonator has been developed, when the resonator is mounted on the intake system of 4-cycle SI engines for the improvement of volumetric efficiency. The experimental work has also been carried out for the verification of the program, and it is found that the result of calculation by the simulation program fits qualitatively well with that of experiment. To get the optimal mounting position of resonator on the intake system, the influence of the variation of dimensions of resonator such as neck length, volume and neck diameter were examined by the numerical calculation of the program in advance and the results were compared with the experiments. It is found that the position which is departed 150cm from plenum chamber is better than any other positions, and the average amount of the increase of volumetric efficiency is about 2∼3%

  • The aim of this study is to develop an automated program for noise prediction in shipboard compartments, for this purpose of calculating noise levels accurately and quickly. The program calculates sound power level at HVAC components based on the empirical method suggested by NEBB and utilizing the manufacturer's test data. The program developed uses the GUI functions to help in efficient modeling and calculation. To verify the reliability of developed program, the predicted data was compared with the measured data in shipboard compartments. As a result, the average difference between predicted and measured data is ${\pm}3dB$.

  • Saturated boiling heat transfer experiment in a hemispherical narrow space is conducted using Freon-113 to investigate an additional heat removal capability through a hypothetical gap between lower head and degraded core. The narrow space of 1mm consists of a 124mm diameter heated stainless steel hemisphere and a glass outer vessel. Within the hemispherical narrow space large coalesced bubbles are produced and these bubbles rise in random direction, causing liquid flow in from the opposite side to fill the region. Such flow in random direction makes the flow field in the narrow space very chaotic and thus enhance heat transfer. The heat transfer coefficient is higher at lower angle and at higher heat flux. The present study shows that the liquid from upper region can effectively penetrate into the gap and augment the heat removal capability through tile gap.

  • The safety level of Sodium Fast Reactors is directly related with the sodium void reactivity. A low-void effect design has been proposed within the Horizon2020 ESFR-SMART project thanks to the introduction of a sodium plenum above the active core. In order to assess the impact of this core conception on transient analysis, a map with the spatial distribution of sodium void worth can be computed and fed into a point-kinetics-based transient code. Due to the spatial correlations between neighboring zones, the global effect of voiding two different axial or radial regions is not necessarily the sum of both individual contributions. Neglecting those correlations in the void worth map and consequently in the transient analysis may lead to an unrealistic prediction of the transient sequences. In this work, a method based on sensitivity analysis and similarity assessment is proposed for predicting those correlations. The method proved to be able to establish correlations between axial slices of a sub-assembly and was checked against realistic sodium void propagation patterns.

  • In this study, the risk rates of different contamination sources of the Foreign material in a minienvironment were analyzed through CFD simulation. From the results, the ambient contamination sources mainly affect wafers in the FOUP, whereas the internal contamination sources mainly affect wafers laid on the robot arm in the minienvironment. And the purging plenum system is very useful in protecting the wafers in the FOUP from Foreign materials transferred from the FFU. However, this system is unable to protect the wafers on the robot arm from internal Foreign materials and the wafers in the FOUP from sources of the interface between the FOUP and the minienvironment.

  • To model the compression system with more integrity, the pipeline dynamic model was applied to the compression system model. To combine the pipeline dynamic model and the compression system model, appropriate boundary conditions were selected on each end of connecting pipe with compressor, plenum and throttle valve. Simulation result illustrate the effect of pipeline dynamic model on the stability of compression system.
