Development of the hybrid-type ultrasound speaker (하이브리드형 초음파 스피커 개발)

  • Directional ultrasonic speakers that are used to hear sound only in a specific area have been continuously researched on various improvements in terms of sound quality and cost compared to general speakers. In this paper, we propose a DSP based hybrid-type ultrasonic speaker that can be heard at the same time as a general speaker in order to compensate for the sound in the low-band range, considering that it is difficult to hear the low-band sound below 500 Hz due to the sensor characteristics of the ultrasonic speaker. In the case of the system that is implemented by simply connecting a general speaker and an ultrasonic speaker, there are issues of high cost and difficulties of control as two amplifiers are used to playback ultrasonic and general sound sources. In addition, sound quality deteriorates due to the difference in playback time between ultrasonic and general sound sources. In order to improve issues of cost, control and sound quality, we developed hybrid-type ultrasonic speaker with a DSP based amplifier that can simultaneously playback by synchronizing the general sound source with the regenerated ultrasonic sound source, in addition to implement the existing CODEC functions such as Dynamic Range Control (DRC) and Equalizer (EQ).

  • In this paper, we explore the streaming environment which adopts the MPEG-4 FGS(Fine Granualarity Scalability) encoding schemes. We investigate the server and client structure to fine the bottleneck of streaming system. After the structures, we propose a novel packet scheduling algorithm which enhances user perceptable playback quality. Experimental results show the performance enhancement of our algorithm, and system require less resources.

  • VoD(Video-on-Demand) servers have to provide timely processing guarantees for continuous media and reduce the storage and bandwidth requirements for continuous media. The compression techniques make the bit rates of compressed video data significantly variable from frame to frame. A VoD system should be able to provide the client with interactive operations such as fast forward and fast rewind in addition to normal playback of movie. However, interactive operations require additional resources such as storage space, disk bandwidth, memory and network bandwidth. In a stored video application such as VoD system, it is possible that a priori disk access patterns can be used to reserve the system resources in advance. In addition, clients of VoD server spend most of their time in playback mode and the period of time spent in interactive mode is relatively small. In this paper, I present the new buffer management scheme that provides efficient support for interactive operations in a VoD server using variable bit rate continuous media. Simulation results show that our strategy achieves 34% increase of the number of accepted clients over the LRU strategy.

A GoP-based Dynamic Transmission Scheduling for supporting Fast Scan Functions with m-times playback rate in Video-On-Demand (주문형 비디오에서 m배속 고속 재생을 위한 GoP 기반 동적 전송 스케줄 작성)

  • Video-On-Demand (VOD) is expected to provide the user with interactive operations such as VCR functions. In particular, fast scan functions like “Fast Forward” of “Fast Backward” for a certain speedup playback are required. Since they require a significant amount of system resources, schemes to reduce bandwidth requirements for the network or disk are needed. In MPEG standard, Group-of-Pictures (GoP) is a random access unit which can be decoded independently. Since storing and transmitting a video stream based on GoP is efficient, it is practical to support fast scan functions based on GoP. In this paper, we present a dynamic transmission scheduling scheme to support fast scan functions with m-times normal playback rate for a stored video. The proposed scheme writes a transmission schedule whenever user requests a fast scan function. That is, the scheme constructs the data set to be smoothed by skipping GoPs according to a given speedup factor, and then writes the transmission schedule by applying a bandwidth smoothing. Finally, the scheme restarts the transmission of video data to a client according to the new schedule. The proposed scheme results in speeding up the playback rate by utilizing “GoP skipping”, and then reduces the computational overhead by applying a bandwidth smoothing based on GoP.

  • Most policies of VOD services are mainly studied about server system, and make no touch on clients buffer stabilization which is the basis of guaranteeing playback quality and playing without cut off. In this paper, we proposed a skipping frame transfer policy that can sending dynamic buffer control signal to server in accordance with clients buffer state of starvation or overrun, and server transfers a skipped frame to client after receive the control signal. And through a simulation, we show the suggested policy is more efficiency on playback quality by buffer stabilization which is by preventing loss and miss for receiving frame due to grow worse client buffer state.

  • This paper proposes Remote Educating Communication Tool (RECT) that allows students and teachers to communicate using Web-based Bulletin Board System. The distance teaching using DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) voice module is used to enhance academic accomplishments for students in computer class. The DCOM voice module to be used in distance learning is designed, implemented and applied to teachers and students in the computer class in order to measure and analyze academic results. The RECT server provides Q&A sessions between students and teachers in the BBS using recording and playback functions. The client RECT includes recording and playback functions. The client module of RECT receives and uses DCOM module. When recording, the client transmits voice files with the recorded content to the server.

  • IStreaming services with a client-server architecture have scalability problem because a server cannot accomodate clients more than its processing capability. This paper introduces a case study for implementing H.264 streaming system based on P2P architecture in order to provide scalable and stable broadcast streaming services over the internet. The prototype system called OmniCast264 consists of the H.264 encoding server, the streaming server, the proxy server, and peer nodes. The proxy server dynamically manages placement of the peer nodes on the P2P network. Omnicast264 has the concepts of distributed streaming loads, real-time playback, error-robustness and modularity. Thus, it can provide large-scale broadcast streaming services. Finally, we have built P2P streaming systems with 12 PCs connected serially or in parallel. The experiment shows that OmniCast264 can provide real-time playback.

Performance Estimation of Receiving Data Parket of TT&C System on the Pass Time of LEO Satellite (저궤도 위성의 통과시간에서 관제 시스템의 수신 데이터 패킷 성능 예측)

  • LEO(Low altitude Earth Orbit) Satellite systems have been utilized in the field of earth and scientific observation (cartography mission, ocean color monitoring, bioglogical coeanography, space environments observation by space physics sensor, and meteorological observation, atmospheric observation etc.), and the field of military (military communications and secret information, enemy reconnaissance etc.), and recently been developing in the field of mobile satellite commnication of GMPCS for commercial utilization. In Korea, KOMPSAT I satellite and ground system are been developing and planed to be lunched on October 1999 In this paper, the link budge of the TT&C system for LEO satellite is described and the relations between elevation angle and pass time of LEO satellite are calculated according to satellite moving. And the packet error rates of receiving data are derived three packet error rates(PER) of real-time(RT) mode, playback(PB) mode, and real-time and range tone(RT+RNG) mode are estimated according to pass time of satellite. The results of PER are the best at real-time and the worst at real-time mode and range mode at the all pass time of satellite. The average error free packet(EFP)s of real-time mode, playback mode, and real-time and range tone for the pass time of satellite are obtained as 99.999999%, 99.999912%, 99.995945% respectively. Therefore, transmission sequence of telemetry data are determined such as PER sequence according to pass time, namely, real-time, playback, and real-time and range mode.

  • A new adaptive PRML architecture, considered not only DVD-ROM but also DVD-Multi including DVD-RAM as well, is presented to demonstrate its superiority over the conventional analog channel in a DVD system. For this new architecture, channel adaptation algorithm using gain controlled type of FIR filter, and asymmetry compensation algorithm using expected level adaptation of viterbi decoder are presented. In addition, a method of modelling the disk tilt and asymmetrical read-back signal are discussed.

  • In this paper, a new symbol timing algorithm for a magnetic recording system as HDD, is proposed. Above all, the Lorentzian channel model applied, the distortion and the attenuation problems of playback signals at high speed and storage density were considered. The structure and the operation of popular data detectors for HDD were understood, and the adopted symbol timing algorithm were profoundly analyzed. On the basis of these understanding and analysis, a new symbol timing algorithm for high density HDD was proposed, and the performance evaluation of this proposed algorithm was done.
