  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors. The data were collected by this study included field measurement survey, and non-participatory observation from 8 child care centers in Seoul. The field measurement survey were conducted from February 20 to March 20, 2005, whereas non-participatory behavior observation were conducted from June 15 to July 10, 2005. The major results showed the following. 1) Most of child care centers were too small, did not use the adequate surfacing to play various activities, and were made of play equipment setting. 2) Child's play behavior focused on functional play activity and construction play activity. 3) The relationship between outdoor play environments and child's play behaviors showed that small outside play environment with monotonous construction of play setting produced functional play behaviors on children. However, in some cases, despite the small and monotonous play area, diverse play behaviors were observed. These playgrounds at least differed from others in that they provided the place where multi purpose play was possible. This finding shows that multi purpose play areas can be an alternative in small playground environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a guideline for outdoor play settings in child care centers. From March to July, 2005, data were collected from 223 directors at child care centers through a structured questionnaire, field measurement survey and non-participatory observation in seventeen child care centers in Seoul and Daejeon. The statistical methods for analysing data were frequency, percentage, mean, $X^2$ and F-test. The results showed as follows: 1)the existing outdoor playground area in child care centers should be expanded more than $4\;m^2$ per child. 2) Outdoor play facilities should be equipped with two structured play sets, a play facility for unstructured play and an adventure facility to make child's various activities possible and to promote child development. 3)flooring materials for outdoor playground should be required to use more than three kinds such as solid coverings (cf. asphalt, standard concrete), wood, lawn, soil or sands. 4)to let children enjoy various activities, outdoor playground area should be composed of various play facilities like indoor play gyms and should be independent but have good connections between play facilities depending on characteristics of play activities. 5)Play spaces of outdoor playground should be composed of physical play space, unstructured and dramatized play space, rest space, space for nature and adventure space. In addition, appropriate play equipments should be provided in respective play space.

  • This study investigated children's literate behaviors in a block play area, in a block play area enriched with literacy materials, and in enriched block play with teacher intervention. The subjects were twelve 5-year-old boys who were emergent readers and writers. The results showed that literate behaviors increased in the enriched environment, compared to the non-enriched environment, and literate behaviors increased dramatically after teacher intervention in the enriched environment. The results of this study suggest that teacher intervention in block play enriched with literacy materials contributes to children's development of literacy.

  • This study examined the actual conditions of outdoor facilities and evaluated safety evaluations levels in playgrounds based on types of kindergartens. The samples for the survey were 100 kindergartens in Seongnam city Gyeonggi-Do province. Most outdoor facilities consisted of playgrounds with sand area and complex playing equipments, while wood-working area, sensory playing area, and mud playing area were less equipped than other facilities. In the case of outdoor playing facilities there were meaningful environmental differences within kindergartens. The public has less diversity in play areas and equipments and providing safety guidelines in playgrounds than privates. The score for the safety evaluations in the outdoor play environment was higher than average. As the range outdoor playing facilities increased, safety was dually considered, while kindergartens with a higher ratio of child-teacher numbers exhibited less consideration to playground safety.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of activity areas according to the age difference and provide the alternatives for space planning of activity areas in classroom of childcare centers. This study used the content analysis method for field survey data collected from 36 classrooms of 9 childcare centers in the Daejeon area. Floor plans were converted to Autocad drawings to analyze the characteristics of activity areas. The results of this study were as follows; 1) In case of 0 to 2-year-old classrooms, they had 6 activity areas such as gross-motor area, role play, block building, language, creative expression, exploration/manipulation area. The activity area with the most low frequency was gross-motor area. 2) In case of 0 to 2-year-old classrooms, the size of activity area was in order of gross-motor area > role play > block building > language > creative expression > exploration/manipulation area. In case of 3 to 5-year-old classrooms, the size of activity area was in order of language > art > role play > math > block building > science > tone and rhythmic area. 3) The central areas with easy access in 0 to 2-year-old classrooms were Large-motor and Imaginary Play Areas. Also, more isolated areas were Manupulatives and Block Areas. The central areas with easy access in 3 to 5-year-old classrooms were Arts, Numbers and Manupulatives. • This study dealt with free play activities in the curricula of childcare centers in Daejeon area. 29 teachers from 21 day care centers were interviewed individually to obtain an understanding of teachers perceptions and conflicting views about play activity in the context of different day care curricula. The data were analysed qualitatively, using categorization and key word classification, frequency analyses and chi-squared tests. The results were as follows: (1) play-oriented curricula included sufficient play time and planned play activities in terms of the children's development. Children's freedom in play, optimum intercession by teachers, and interrelating activities between activity areas were included. In mixed curricula, children's freedoms were limited in many cases, and interrelating play between activity areas was hardly found. Formal lesson-oriented curricula resulted unplanned play activities and teachers' passive intercession of play. (2) Most teachers believed that play activities were more important to a child's development than formal lessons.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among mothers' play beliefs, children's gender and home play frequency, and their preferences for three types of play. Methods: Totally 256 mothers of 5-year-olds participated in the survey in metropolitan area. Data were analyzed with t-test, Pearson's correlations, and stepwise multi-regression using SPSS 22.0. Results: First, boys and girls showed little difference in their home play experiences. Boys preferred active and rough play, while girls preferred quiet play. Second, mothers' play beliefs and children's home play frequency had partial correlations with children's play preferences. Third, predictors of children's play preferences were influenced by the types of play. Children's gender and mothers' play beliefs affected children's preference for active play. Only gender explained children's preference for rough play. Finally, children's gender, home play frequency, and mothers' play beliefs influence children's preference for quiet play. Conclusion: In conclusion, gender is an important factor of children's play preferences, and mothers' play beliefs and children's home play frequency affect their preferences for a specific type of play.

  • This study used qualitative methods to understand kindergarten girls' perception of block play and to devise teacher strategies for encouraging block play for girls who had not participated in block play. Results showed that girls preferred art and home-dramatic play over block play. Girls' preference not to play with blocks was based on harassment by boys and confusion about how to build with blocks and the fact that pride in block structures could not be communicated to their parents at home. Consequently, a girls-only block play area was designed with appropriate accessories along with presentation of some Polaroid pictures. Results were that girls enjoyed block play and made ingenious block structures.
