  • Carbon-supported Pt catalyst systems containing defect adsorption sites on the anode of direct methanol fuel cells were investigated, to elucidate the mechanisms of H2 dissociation and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to determine the effect of defect sites located neighboring to or distant from the Pt catalyst on H2 and CO adsorption properties, based on electronic properties such as adsorption energy and electronic band gap. Interestingly, the presence of neighboring defect sites led to a reduction of H2 dissociation and CO poisoning due to atomic Pt filling the defect sites. At distant sites, H2 dissociation was active on Pt, but CO filled the defect sites to form carbon π-π bonds, thus enhancing the oxidation of the carbon surface. It should be noted that defect sites can cause CO poisoning, thereby deactivating the anode gradually.

  • Sodium borohydride($NaBH_4$) known as the material of hydrogen generation and storage can produce the hydrogen via catalytic hydrolysis. This protide chemical could be used in the hydrogen supply system for residential and mobile fuel cells, and thus many researches and developments regarding to these chemicals and decomposition reactions have been implemented. We experimented the hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ alkaline solution by metal oxide-supported PGM(platinum group metal) catalysts and measured the generation rate of hydrogen which is product of decomposition reaction. We compared oxides as catalyst supports, and the precious metals, Pt and Ru for the catalysts and studied the effects of amounts of catalyst added and $NaBH_4$ concentrations on the hydrogen generation rates and patterns.

  • HI decomposition was conducted using Pt/C-based catalysts with a fixed-bed reactor in the range of 573 K to 773 K. To examine the change of the characteristic properties of the catalysts, $N_2$ adsorption analyser, a X-ray diffractometer(XRD), and a scanning electron microscopy(SEM) were used before and after the HI decomposition reaction. the effect of Pt loading on HI decomposition was investigated by $CO_2$-TPD. HI conversion of all catalysts increased as decomposition temperature increased. The XRD analysis showed that the sizes of platinum particle became larger and agglomerated into a lump during the reaction. From $CO_2$-TPD, it can be concluded that the cause for the increase in catalytic activity may be attributed to the basic sites of catalyst surface. The results of both b desorption and gasification reaction showed the restriction on the use of Pt/C-based catalyst.

  • Hydrogen has been considered as an important and essential future energy source. But the storage of the hydrogen is a difficult problem and many studies were focused on this matter. However, the MTH-system (methylcyclohexane, toluene, hydrogen) was proposed for storage of hydrogen by Taube et al. and that is the reaction of hydrogen with toluene to give methylcyclohexane. One toluene molecule can store six hydrogen atoms to form methylcyclohexane. In this form the hydrogen can be easily stored in liquid organic hydrides and transported at ambient pressure in tanks. Hence, this study is focused on the catalytic dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane. Since supported platinum and nickel were employed as catalysts in literature, in this study, porous Pt and Ni were prepared and tested for the dehydrogenation reaction. When the porous Pt catalyst was applied to the dehydrogenation it showed higher activity in the reaction and higher selectivity to toluene. Specially at higher pressure, it showed almost 100 % conversion and 100 % selectivity and hence porous platinum could be considered as best for the given reaction.

  • Corrosivities and catalytic activities of platinum-transition metal alloy catalyses loaded on carbon substrate and were studied by electrochemical method using a unit cell. And the analysis of Pt-alloy catalyst was conducted by x-ray diffractometer. Among the catalysts, the Pt-Mo/carbon, Pt-Fe-Co/carbon and Pt-Fe/carbon catalyst showed more excellent cathodic current densities than others. It was found that most of cathodic current density for the Pt-Mo/carbon electrode was $120mA/cm^2$. The current density of the Pt-Fe-Co/carbon was much higher than that of Pt/carbon, reaching $200mA/cm^2$.

  • Present paper reports a new method to separate the electrolyte membranes and carbon paper without using ultrasonic waves and stirring. In this method, these were separated from fuel cell membrane-electrode assembly(MEA) using the distilled water, butanol and surfactant by dipping method without the dispersion of catalyst particles. Separated carbon paper catalysts and fuel cell Pt/C catalysts were heated in aqua regia at $80{\sim}85^{\circ}C$ and added to precipitant. After calcination, Pt metal was recovered which might be used in fabricating new fuel cells.

  • The loss of activity by coke is an important cause of catalyst deactivation during industrial operation. In this study, hydrogen ratio of reaction condition, which has influenced on coke formation over Pt-Sn catalyst, and regeneration of catalysts activity by coke burning, Pt sintering of coke burning as coke contents, effects of coke formation and deactivation with different Sn contents were confirmed. Pt-Sn-K catalyst supported on θ-alumina and γ-alumina was prepared progressively. Activity of regenerated catalyst for propane dehydrogenation was compared with fresh catalyst by coke burning, after propane dehydrogenation was carried out with different hydrogen ratio at 620 ℃ on fresh catalyst. Regenerated catalyst’s physical characterization such as BET, coke analysis and XRD was investigated. Through catalytic activity test and characterization, Sn contents of catalyst and hydrogen ratio in feed stream could affect coke formation on catalyst surface. Excessive coke makes loss of activity and Pt sintering during air regeneration process.

  • The performance of several catalysts to decompose the high test peroxide (HTP) was described in this paper. Manganese oxide, Platinum and Iridium were coated on the gamma alumina. The response time of various catalysts was measured with a 50 Newton class thruster. Ir/$Al_2O_3$ that showed the fastest response time at the thruster, failed the reaction when continuous mode test was carried out with the thruster. Pt/$Al_2O_3$ and MnO_2/Al_2O_3$ can be substitutes to decompose the HTP. In addition, for larger thruster, MnO_2/Al_2O_3$ can be a good catalyst because its cost is below 5 % of Pt/$Al_2O_3$.

  • The $CO_2$ dry reforming reaction, which converts carbon dioxide to hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is typical endothermic reaction, and also known as adverse reaction owing to thermodynamics. In order to overcome the problem, the development studies of suitable catalyst based on precious metals for high durability of thermal and optimization of life time have been examined but it had economical problem by high cost. In this study, we confirmed optimum contents of Pt and La with such different contents of Pt (0.02~0.2 wt%) or La (2~20 wt%) over $Co/SiO_2$ which prepared for excellent activity and cost-effective catalysts. As a result, the promoted catalysts with 0.04 wt% Pt or 9 wt% La over $Co/SiO_2$ showed the highest activity which is 57% and 55% $CO_2$ conversion respectively. Also, the particle size of cobalt on the promoted catalysts with 0.04 wt% Pt or 9 wt% La by characterization of catalyst could confirm the smallest particle size in this study. Therefore, it could know that particle size of cobalt had effected the stability and reactivity of catalysts due to the contents of Pt and La.

  • The present work explores the effect of carbon-supported platinum catalyst on the HI decomposition using gas adsorption analyzer, thermogravimetry, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and gas chromatography. For this purpose, three types of activated carbon (C), Pt/C-1 wt.%, and Pt/C-5 wt.% were prepared. The HI gas conversion is crucially influenced by the amount of Pt on the carbon support. The more the amount of Pt was, the higher results in the HI gas conversion. For three types of catalysts, HI conversion increased with increasing the decomposition temperature but with decreasing the space velocity. The increase of HI conversion with temperature was more pronounced in activated carbon than that in Pt/C. From EDX result, it was found that the activated carbon comprised higher amount of iodine than the Pt/C after the decomposition reaction. This implies that the HI conversion is closely related to the amount of Iodine.
