  • In order to evaluate that factors such as span length, member type and train loading affect on fatigue of steel railway bridges, in this paper, a series field tests were carried out for some plate girder bridges. From the result estimated by rainflow counting method to analyses real strain-time curve obtained from the field test, it was known that the fatigue effect is more significant in the bridge having short span length and the secondary members regardless of train load types.

  • The finite strip method is presented for the analysis of steel deck bridges. Like the Pelikan-Esslinger design method for the steel deck bridges, steel deck is treated as an equivalent orthotropic plate. In the presented method, the deck is discretised by finite strips in the longitudinal direction and the effect of main girder or floor beam deflection can also be accounted for. In this method, the terms of harmonic series at elastically support such as transverse floor or diaphragm in steel deck become coupled. Solutions of this method are compared with other available analytical and numerical solution, and good agreement is observed.

  • An integrated damage identification system (IDIS) using modal information to detect damage in structures is presented. The objective of this study is to develop a system of softwares that facilitates detecting damage locations and estimating damage severities in bridges. Firstly, the theoretical background for IDIS is outlined. Secondly, a GUI-based IDIS software is programmed. Finally, the feasibility and applicability of the IDIS software are experimentally demonstrated using small-scaled plate-girder models.

  • In ship structures many of the structural plates have cutouts, for example, at inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has a cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed In general, actual ship structure adopted reinforcement of stiffener around the cutout in order to preventing from buckling so it need to examine a buckling and ultimate strength behaviour considering a cutout because In many ship yards used class rule for calculating buckling strength but it is difficult to evaluate perforate stiffened plate with random size. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship and then was performed finite element series analysis varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section using commercial FEA program(ANSYS) under compressive load.

  • This paper presents an experimental result to evaluate the redundancy in continuous span two plate-girder bridges which are generally classified as a non-redundant load path structure. The experiments were performed when one of the two girders is seriously cracked. To estimate the effects of bottom lateral bracing on the redundancy, the experiment variable was considered as the bottom lateral bracing, and two 1/5-scaled bridge specimens with and without lateral bracing system were fabricated. The ultimate loading tests were conducted on the damaged specimens with an induced crack at a girder in the side span. The test results showed that the load carrying capacity of damaged specimen with bracing was about 1.2 times higher than that without bracing. To evaluate the redundancy in each specimen, numerical analysis was performed to calibrate the difference of dead load between the actual bridge and the test specimens. When the dead load calibration is considered, the results showed that a continuous span two-girder bridges have a reasonable redundancy even without lateral bracing. Especially, the level of redundancy is increased by about 1.8 times when the lateral bracing is provided.

  • Ship have cutout inner bottom and girder and floor etc. Ship's structure is used much, and structure strength must be situated, but establish new concept when high stress interacts sometimes fatally the area. There is no big problem usually by aim of weight reduction, a person and change of freight, piping etc.. Because cutout's existence grow up in this place, and elastic buckling strength by load causes large effect in ultimate strength. Therefore, stiffened perforated plate considering buckling strength and ultimate strength is one of important design criteria which must examine when decide structural concept at initial design. Therefore, md, reasonable buckling strength about stiffened perforated plate need to ultimate strength limited design . Calculated ultimate strength varied several web height and cutout's dimension, and thickness in this investigated data. Used program(ANSYS) applied F.E.A code based on finite element method

  • This study presents an experimental study of the structural behavior for steel plate-concrete column-to-steel girder connections. Experiments were carried out to investigate the moment-rotation characteristics, failure behavior and ultimate moment capacity of these connections. The results of this experimental study involving three welded moment-resisting connections subjected to cyclic loading are presented. The specimens were fabricated at full scale to evaluate their hysteretic behavior. A description of the test specimens, the details of the joint, the test system and the testing methods are described. The test results showed that the structural behavior of these composite connections was influenced by the connection details.

  • Buildings featuring a transfer structure can be commonly found in metropolitan cities situated in regions of lower seismicity. A transfer structure can be in the form of a rigid plate or an array of deep girders positioned at the podium level of the building to support the tower structure of the building. The anomalous increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls above the podium is a major cause for concern. Design guidance on how to quantify these adverse effects is not available. In this paper a simplified method for quantifying the increase in the shear force demand on the tower walls is presented. In view of the very limited ductile nature of this type of construction the analysis presented herein is based on linear elastic behaviour.

  • This paper suggests a method for the analysis of box girders which are subject to the membrane and the plate bending actions, Moreover, the method is applied to the box girders under distributed loads which have various geometrical types of cross sections and are made out of different materials. The approach is based on the finite element technique in which the structure is considered to be a spatial assemblage of flat plate elements and the deformations of the plates are to be approximated with 9-noded parabolic isoparametric elements. The results are summarized as follows. 1.In all models, the larger the widths of top flange inside of web are, the larger the vertical deflections are. 2.The maximum transverse and longitudinal moments in the composite box girders are judged to be larger than those in the RC box girders. 3.The transverse and the longitudinal moments in top flange of composite box. girders are larger than those in that of the RC box girders. 4.The transverse and longitudinal moments in web and bottom flange of the composite box girders are estimated to be very small in compare to those in web and bottom flange of the RC box girders.

  • Tests were performed to obtain the flexural capacity of the innovative FRP-Concrete Composite Deck (FCCD) above girders. Test parameters were details of connection parts between FCCD and girder, such as continuity of FRP module, reinforcing ratio of FRP re-bars, and existence of shear connecting plate. As a test result, we found flexural strength of FCCD in the negative zone increases when FRP module is continuous, and reinforcement is increased, and shear connecting plate exists. And the flexural strength of all specimens give enough safety compared to the value needed in Korean highway bridge design code.
