  • Phthalates, known as typical endocrine disruptors, are plasticizers used to soften plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Because of their material properties, phthalates are used extensively in the production of toys, flooring, wood processing, detergents, and even cosmetics as lubricants and perfume solvents. Due to their endocrine disrupting effect and other adverse health effects published, recently, phthalates have been regulated in many countries. Besides, in an effort to replace phthalates, several chemical plasticizers such as trioctyltrimellitate (TOTM) and dioctylterephthalate (DIOP) have been used instead of the existing harmful phthalates, and novel alternatives are continuously being developed. Nonetheless, phthalates are still being detected in several plastic products, and the safety of alternatives that are considered safe is being questioned. In this review, we describe the adverse health effects of phthalates, their regulation and the current status of their alternatives.

  • This work is about the development or asphalt sealant using the waste edible oil. Asphalt sealant has been used for crack filler and bridge deck joint sealer Several plasticizers such as aromatic or paraffin process oils, DOP, Bunker C fuel oil, and waste edible oil were compounded with the basic components such as asphalt(AP-5), a thermoplastic elastomer(SBS triblock copolymer), a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and stabilizers. Penetration, softening point, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Their properties were changed largely depending on both the type and content of plasticizers. Waste edible oil and DOP were the best plasticizers for the low temperature tensile adhesion characteristics. Penetration and elongation by tensile adhesion of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste edible oil content and decreased with the increase of talc content. The manufacture of asphalt sealant with low penetration and excellent low temperature tensile adhesion was possible by the recipe optimization.

  • In order to develop the environmental-friendly new materials based on soybean protein which is plantable macromolecule, thermal characteristics of the soybean protein resin (SPI) modified by plasticizers (1,3-propandiol, glycerol) and cross linking agents (glutaraldehyde, epichlorohydrin, glyoxal, urea) were analyzed by TGA. Mechanical properties of modified SPI were investigated and fracture was observed by SEM. As the result, flexibility of SPI film was increased by adding plasticizers; 1,3-propandiol and glycerol. Plasticization effect of glycerol was relatively greater than that of 1,3-propandiol. With the application of crosslinking agents (glycerol, epichlorohydrin and glyoxal), strength and thermal stability of SPI increased with their content. On the other hand, in case of addition of urea, thermal stability of SPI decreased and its strength was reduced because cross-linking between urea and SPI was somewhat difficult. Fracture surfaces and domain interfaces of the modified SPI resins were observed with SEM.

  • A plasticizer is a substance which is added to a material to improve its processability, flexibility and stratchability. Phthalates and adipates are the most frequently used plasticizers of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). However, they can migtate into food from PVC food packaging, and some of them are especially suspected as endocrine disruptors. In this study, Simultaneous analysis of 13 phthalates and 9 adipates were carried out by dual-column gas chromatography system equipped wi two FID detectors for rapid confirmation and quantification. The Proposed method was validated with > 0.993 of linearity in the ranges of 10-500 mg/l, < $3.5\%$ RSD of reproducability in 10 inter-days sample preparations, and > $98.1\%$ of recoveries for all the plasticizers. DEHA was detected in all the 3 PVC wraps at levels of 176.9-198.5mg/g. Among the 51 samples of PVC gaskets, the targeted plasticizers were detected in 41 samples. Of these plasticizer detected samples,40 contained DIDP at the levels of 157.3-374.7 mg/g and one contained DMP at the levels of 165.6 mg/g. Also, some plasticizers were detected in other packaging materials such as PET, PP, PE, Pulp. But it might be attributed to contamination in manufacturing.

  • To replace phthalate plasticizer for PVC, acetylated monoglyceride (AMG) plasticizers were prepared from plant oil and their plasticization effects were also investigated. Transesterification of coconut oil by glycerol followed by acetylation with acetic anhydride gave AMG-CoCo (Coco : Coconut Oil). In addition, AMG-GMO (GMO : Glycerol monooleate) and AMG-GMO-Epoxy were synthesized by acetylation and epoxidation with glycerol monooleate. It was found that the thermal stability of AMG plasticizers increased in the following order: AMG-GMO-Epoxy > AMG-GMO > AMG-CoCo and all three plasticizers were thermally more stable than those of common petroleum-based plasticizer DOP (Dioctyl phthalate). The tensile strain values of the PVC containing AMG compounds were ca. 770~810%, while tensile strength values were ca. 19~22 MPa, which were higher than those of PVC containing DOP. DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) results showed that the miscibility of AMG-GMO-Epoxy in PVC was excellent and the $T_g$ of PVC containing AMG-GMO-Epoxy at 50 phr decreased down to $24^{\circ}C$. Finally, the leaching experiment result showed that the weight loss values of PVC containing AMG-GMO and AMG-GMO-Epoxy at 50 phr were as low as 2 and 1%, respectively, indicating that they have high water migration resistance. The above findings suggested that AMG-GMO-Epoxy could be one of plant oil-based PVC plasticizers to replace DOP.

  • To improve the physical properties of protein films, various plasticizers and cross-linking agents were used in the preparation of the films. For zein film, 3% polypropylene glycol with 3% glycerol was the best plasticizer, while 2.5% glycerol was the most suitable for soy protein isolate (SPI) film in terms of tensile strength (TS), % elongation, and water vapor permeability (WVP). Formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, glyoxal, and cinnamaldehyde as cross-linking agents of protein films were used to further improve the physical properties of the films. All aldehydes used as cross-linking agent in this study improved TS of zein and SPI films. In particular, cinnamaldehyde was the best cross-linking agent due to its safety in foods. These results suggest that appropriate use of plasticizer and cross-linking agent like cinnamaldehyde should improve the physical properties of protein films for use in food packaging.

  • Phthalate plasticizers residue in food is a serious threat to public health. Spores of Ganoderma lucidum are easy to be contaminated with phthalates during collection and processing. In this study, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) was performed to remove phthalates in spores of G. lucidum, and the effects on acid and peroxide values of spores' oil were also evaluated. The results showed SFE removed 100% of the residual di-iso-butyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate in the spores of G. lucidum. No significant differences in polysaccharides content and fatty acid composition were observed between SFE and control spores. However, the triterpenoid extracts of SFE spores had a 7.45% increase, significantly higher than that in control spores. Accelerated oxidation tests further implied that SFE could improve the stability of spores' oil. Our results suggested SFE is a potential approach to remove phthalate from food related products.
