  • Application of heat recovery system applying air supply and cexhaust ventilation device essential in energy management system for the optimum ventilation system utilization and energy saving. This is a key element of infrastructure technology for high-efficiency energy buildings, because it can save heating and cooling energy in winter and summer. In this paper, heat transfer efficiency was simulated using paper, plastic, and aluminum materials that was examined to compare heat exchanger performance under uniform flow conditions. We tested heat transfer efficiengy according to the shape of two of that, one is orthogonal and the other is refraction shape. Based on the simulation results, it is expected to contribute to the production of high performance heat exchanger with heat transfer performance and pressure loss.

  • The objective of this study is to predict the structural characteristics of a heat exchanger mounted on an aircraft engine using finite element analysis. The plastic fracture and life of the heat exchanger were estimated by a thermo-mechanical analysis. Tensile tests were conducted under high temperature conditions (700, 800, 900, 1000 K) using five specimens to obtain the mechanical properties of the Inconel 625 tubes. To assess the structural characteristics of the heat exchanger, the full and partial models were applied under the operating conditions given by the thermo-mechanical and inertial load. As a result, the case, tubesheet, flange, and mounting components have a reasonable safety margin to the allowable stress assuming a fatigue strength of Inconel 625 of 10000 cycles under 1000 K.

  • Evaporative cooling is a very effective way for exhaust heat recovery that uses both latent heat and sensible heat. This study investigated the performance of a heat recovery system using evaporative cooling. The experimental apparatus comprised a plastic heat exchanger, a water spray nozzle, an air blowing fan, a water circulation pump, and measuring sensors for the temperature, humidity, and flow rate. The effectiveness of the sensible heat recovery without evaporation was measured and compared with that of the total heat recovery with evaporation. The effectiveness of the sensible and total heat recoveries decreased as the air flow rate increased, and a much higher effectiveness was obtained with the counterflow arrangement in both cases. For total heat recovery, the effectiveness increased with the water flow rate, and the parallel flow arrangement was found to be more sensitive to the water flow rate than the counterflow arrangement.

  • PHE(Process Heat Exchanger) is a key component required to transfer heat energy of $950^{\circ}C$ generated in a VHTR(Very High Temperature Reactor) to the chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute established a small-scale gas loop for the performance test of components, which are used in the VHTR, and they manufactured a PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X to be tested in the small-scale gas loop. Results from the elastic structural analysis on the PHE prototype were reported in the previous article. In order to investigate the macroscopic structural characteristics and behavior of the PHE prototype under the test condition of the small-scale gas loop far more in detail, elastic-plastic high-temperature structural-analysis of the PHE prototype was carried out in this study.

The results obtained in this study will be used to design the performance test setup for the modified PHE prototype.

  • Hot air heater with light oil burner is the most common heater for greenhouse heating in the winter season in Korea. However, since the thermal efficiency of the heater is about 80∼85%, considerable unused heat amount in the form of exhaust gas heat discharges to atmosphere. In order to capture this exhaust heat a heat recovery system for plant bed heating in the greenhouse was built and tested in the hot air heating system of greenhouse. The heat recovery system is made for plant bed or soil heating in the greenhouse. The system consisted of a heat exchanger made of copper pipes, ${\Phi}12.7{\times}0.7t$ located in the rectangular column of $330{\times}330{\times}900mm$, a water circulation pump, circulation plastic pipe and a water tank. The total heat exchanger area is 1.5$m^2$, calculated considering the heat exchange amount between flue gas and water circulated in the copper pipes. The system was attached to the exhaust gas path. The heat recovery system was designed as to even recapture the latent heat of flue gas when exposing to low temperature water in the heat exchanger. According to the performance test it could recover 45,200 to 51,000kJ/hr depending on the water circulation rates of 330 to $690\ell$/hr from the waste heat discharged. The exhaust gas temperature left the heat exchanger dropped to $100^{\circ}C$ from $270^{\circ}C$ by the heat exchange between the water and the flue gas, while water gained the difference and temperature increased to $38^{\circ}C$ from $21^{\circ}C$ at the water flow rate of $690\ell$/hr. By the feasibility test conducted in the greenhouse, the system did not encounter any difficulty in operations. And, the system could recover 220,235kJ of exhaust gas heat in a day, which is equivalent of 34% of the fuel consumption by the water boiler for plant bed heating of 0.2ha in the greenhouse.

  • In order to select a new material for a heat exchanger, the frosting behavior of a thermally conductive plastic based on PBT was compared to the frosting behavior of aluminum and three types of plastics based on PTFE. The frosting behavior on the 1 mm thick PBT specimen was similar to that of the aluminum specimen but not that of the pure PTFE specimen. The properties of the frost formed on the specimens were affected by both the thermal conductivity and surface characteristics of the materials. The heat and mass transfer rates of the thermally conductive plastic were almost equivalent to those of the aluminum specimen.

  • In this study, a progressive process was performed to fabricate the inner fin of a high-efficiency heat exchanger. A forming simulation was also carried out on the concavo-convex of the inner fin, forming a simulation based on elastic-plastic finite element method. The forming analysis where the speed of the press descended and ascended was set to five seconds showed that the effective stress was at a maximum of about 69 MPa in the curved portion where the bending occurred. Therefore, the die was designed based on the simulation results, and the inner fin die was installed on the 400-ton capacity press. After that, the inner fin fabrication experiment was conducted under the same condition as the simulation. Crack was not found from the curved portion of the concavo-convex of the inner fin. The profile of the concavo-convex of the prepared inner fin measured 6.7~6.8 mm in depth, 2.65~2.7 mm in width, and 0.3 mm in thickness.
