  • Analysis of supported excavation system by Elasto-Plastic Isoparametric Finite Element Method and Elasto-Plastic Beam Method have been conducted for the simulation of stepwise underground excavation. Conventional methods, fixed Supported Beam and Spring Supported Beam method, also have been examined and compared with the results of elasto-plastic beam method and field data. Except unavoidable result of upward ground settlement near the top of retaining wall and relatively high bending moment of wall at each excavation level, satisfactory results have been derived using elasto-plastic isopara metric finite element method. The results from elasto-plastic beam analysis program, developed by the author, are proved to be fit field data in acceptable variance as shown in the paper. Displacement and bending moment, of the wall by conventional methods, both fixed supported beam and spring supported beam, are always underestimated than field data, and attention must be given that the diffence increases with deeper excavation depth and lower horizontal subgrade reaction of the ground.

  • In analyzing the plastic flow of axisymmetric tube extrusion a new method of formulation using the stream function approach and upper-bound theorem is proposed which permits the prediction of plastically deformed zone in analytic expression as well as metal flow. It is shown that the formulation proposed in this work covers the solid extrusion and tube extrusion in axisymmetric case. The effect of some process parameters such as area reduction, the ratio of radii(inner radius to outer radius) and friction factor on extrusion pressure, deformation zone and plastic flow through stream-lined dies has been studied. The presented theoretical analysis can be effectively used for the prediction of deformation zone and plastic flow.

  • This paper focuses on the development of a new SPD (severe plastic deformation) process named HCAE (half channel angular extrusion). HCAE technology is based on principled similar to ECAE, but imposes a larger amount and more effective plastic deformation on materials. The amount of shear deformation can be altered by varying the process parameters. Finite element analyses of HCAE were conducted in order to investigate the characteristics of deformation during HCAE and the simulated results show that the predicted value of imposed plastic strain in a single pass reaches 2.5.

  • During a compression molding process of Unidirectional Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composites, control of filling patterns in mold and distribution of fiber is needed to predict the effects of molding parameters on the flow characteristics. To obtain an excellent product and decide optimum molding conditions, it is important to know the relationship between molding conditions and viscosity. In this study, the anisotropic viscosity of the Unidirectional Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composites is measured by using the parallel plastometer. The model for flow state has been simulated by using the viscosity. The composites is treated as an incompressible New-tonian fluid. The effects of longitudinal/transverse viscosity ration A and slip parameter $\alpha$ on buldging phenomenon and mold filling patterns, are also discussed.

  • Point bending is often used for cambering and curving structural steel girders. An analytical solution, applicable in the elasto-plastic range only, that relates applied loads to the desired curve was recently developed for inducing horizontal curves using four-point bending. This solution does not account for initial residual stresses and geometric imperfections built-in hot-rolled sections. This paper presents results from a full-scale test on a hot-rolled steel section curved using four-point bending. In parallel, a numerical analysis, accounting for both initial geometric imperfections and initial residual stresses, was carried out. The models were validated against the experimental results and a good agreement for lateral offset and for strain in the elasto-plastic and post-plastic ranges was achieved. The results show that the effect of initial residual stresses on deformation and strain is minimal. Finally, residual stresses due to cold bending calculated from the numerical analysis were assessed and a revised stress value for the service load design of the curved girder is proposed.

  • Recently, the finite element method has been sucessfully extended to treat the rather couplet phenomena such as nonlinear buckling problems which are of considerable practical interest. In this study, a finite element program to evaluate the elasto-plastic buckling stress is developed. The Stowell's deformation theory for the plastic buckling of flat plates, which is in good agreement with experimental results, is used to evaluate bending stiffness matrix. A bifurcation analysis is performed to compute the elasto-plastic buckling stress. The subspace iteration method is employed to find the eigenvalues. The results are compared with corresponding enact solutions to the governing equations presented by Stowell and also with experimental data due to Pride. The developed program Is applied to obtain elastic and elasto-plastic buckling stresses for various loafing cases. The effect of different plate aspect ratio is also investigated.

  • This paper deals with the comparison and analysis of brushless DC (BLDC) motor with radial and polar anisotropic plastic magnet. The open-circuit field distributions and back-emf for BLDC motor with polar plastic magnet are established analytically and the results are validated extensively by comparison with finite element (FE) analyses. On the basis of two dimensional (2-D) analytical solutions, this paper predicts open-circuit field characteristics according to design parameters and makes a comparison between BLDC motor with polar plastic magnet and it with radial plastic magnet in terms of required magnet volume and harmonic of air-gap flux density waveform.

  • The purpose of this study is elastic plastic finite element analysis for standard fracture toughness specimens. The principles of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics are shortly summarized and the special requirements for computational tools are derived. Possibilities to model the crack tip singularities are mentioned. The relevant fracture parameters like J-Integral and COD and their correlation are evaluated from elastic plastic finite element calculations of standard fracture toughnes specimens. The size and form of the plastic zone are shown. The comparion between experiment and caculation is discussed as well as the application of the limit load analysis.

  • Shell structures are very interesting from the design point of view and these are well recognized in the scientific literature. In this paper the analysis of the buckling loads and stability paths of a sandwich conical shell with unsymmetrical faces under combined load based on the assumptions of moderately large deflections (geometrically nonlinear theory) is considered and elastic-plastic properties of the material of the faces are taken into considerations. External load is assumed to be two-parametrical one and it is assumed that the shell deforms into the plastic range before buckling. Constitutive relations in the analysis are those of the Nadai-Hencky deformation theory of plasticity and Prandtl-Reuss plastic flow theory with the H-M-H (Huber-Mises-Hencky) yield condition. The governing stability equations are obtained by strain energy approach and Ritz method is used to solve the equations with the help of analytical-numerical methods using computer.

  • This paper presents a closed-form model for evaluating the restraint effect of pressure induced bending on the opening of a circumferential through-wall crack, which is considered plastic deformation behavior. Three-dimensional finite element analyses with different crack lengths, restraint conditions, pipe geometries, magnitudes of internal pressure, and tensile properties were used to investigate the influence of each parameter on the pressure-induced bending restraint on the crack opening displacement. From these investigations, an analytical model based on elastic-perfectly plastic material was developed in terms of the crack length, symmetric restraint length, mean radius to thickness ratio, axial stress corresponding to the internal pressure, and normalized crack opening displacement evaluated from a linear-elastic crack opening condition. Finite element analyses results demonstrate that the proposed analytical model reliably estimated the restraint effect of pressure-induced bending on the plastic crack opening of a circumferential through-wall crack and properly reflected the dependence on each parameter within the range over which the analytical expression was derived.
