  • We developed an ultra low background gamma ray spectrometer particularly suitable for experiment which require lower detection limit. The background of a germanium spectrometer is suppressed by applying active and passive shielding technique at the same time. The active shielding devices consist of plastic scintillating plates of 50 mm thick and anti-coincidence electronic system. The shielding is made of 150 mm thick walls of very low activity lead,20 mm with activity of <10 Bq/kg and 130 mm with activity of <50 Bq/kg. The observed background count rates are 1.2 $s^{-1}$ and 0.36 $s^{-1}$ without and with the active shielding, respectively, overall the energy regions from 30 keV to 3 MeV The cosmic ray induced background is suppressed by a rate of 0.8 $s^{-1}$ at the present work. The detection efficiency curve necessary to obtain the radioactivity of environmental samples has been precisely determined on the energy regions from 80 to 2000 keV with a 10$^3$ ml marinelli beaker sample, consisting of the calibrated radionuclides $^{109}$ Cd, $^{57}$ CO, $^{139}$ Ce, $^{203}$ Hg, $^{113}$ Sn, $^{85}$Sr, $^{137}$ Cs, $^{60}$ Co and $^{88}$ Y. Virtues Of the method are demonstrated by measuring the activity of $^{137}$ Cs contained in the powdered milk.

  • High-frequency induction is an efficient way to rapidly heat mold surface by electromagnetic induction. In the present work, high-frequency induction heating is applied to injection molding of a mobile phone cover in order to eliminate weldlines by efficiently raising the mold temperature. Through the induction heating experiments, the maximum temperature of $143^{\circ}C$ is obtained on the mold surface in 3s of heating, which is higher than the glass transition temperature of the resin material. An injection molding experiment is then performed with the aid of induction heating, from which we can successfully remove all the weldlines of the mobile phone cover. The effect of induction heating conditions such as the heating power and the heating time on the surface appearance is experimentally investigated.

  • Static loadings on ship structure induced either by water pressure before service such as a tank test and ballasting or by cargo pressure during first laden voyage cause relatively much greater stress than dynamic loadings induced by wave. With these static pre-loadings, the initial residual stresses around welded joint, where fatigue strength is concerned(in most cases, where stress concentration occurs) are expected to be shaken-down in a great extent by the elasto-plastic deformation behavior of material. Therefore, it is more resonable to assess the fatigue strength of ship structure with S-N data which have taken into account the effect of shaken-down residual stresses(re-distributed stresses) on the fatigue strength. In this research work, the re-distribution of residual stresses by the tensile pre-loading is measured using an ordinary sectioning method for specimens of padding plate weldment. Fatigue tests are performed also to evaluate the fatigue strength of the both as-welded and pre-loaded specimens.

  • Steel plate bonding method with epoxy is common applied to repair and strengthen RC structures, but Steel is apt to corrode quickly, hard to manufacture and heavy. To overcome these defects, it is carried out research on strengthening RC structures with FRP(Fibre Reinforced Polyrner/Plastic) FRP is generally used in the shape of Plate or Sheet, but it has weak point such as premature failure, difficult work. To cope with these problem, NSMR(Near Surface Mounted Reinforcement) which uses CFRP in the shape of Rod is proposed and carried out active research on strengthening effect of variables such as quantity, anchorage length and space of CFRP-Rod. Strengthening with CFRP-Rod is carried out under loading to some degree in fact, and so the amount of pre-loading is selected as variable in this research. The amount of pre-loading is chosen in proportion to nominal strength of non-strengthened specimen with CFRP-Rod.

  • A small radiation detection system is necessary for the direct characterization of alpha/beta-ray contamination inside pipes generated during the decommission of a nuclear facility. In this work, the new type phoswich detector consisting of the ZnS(Ag) and plastic scintillator for ${\alpha}/{\beta}$ simultaneous counting was designed as part of a development of a equipment capable of monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes. The optimum counting conditions in dimensions of scintillator and a detection system were experimentally confirmed and a performance of alpha/beta-ray discrimination was evaluated. As a result, optimum conditions of a detector suitable for monitoring radiological contamination inside pipes and a feasibility of application to pipe-inside were confirmed.

  • Background: The goal of this study is to develop a general population job-exposure matrix (GPJEM) on asbestos to estimate occupational asbestos exposure levels in the Republic of Korea. Methods: Three Korean domestic quantitative exposure datasets collected from 1984 to 2008 were used to build the GPJEM. Exposure groups in collected data were reclassified based on the current Korean Standard Industrial Classification ($9^{th}$ edition) and the Korean Standard Classification of Occupations code ($6^{th}$ edition) that is in accordance to international standards. All of the exposure levels were expressed by weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) and minimum and maximum concentrations. Results: Based on the established GPJEM, the 112 exposure groups could be reclassified into 86 industries and 74 occupations. In the 1980s, the highest exposure levels were estimated in "knitting and weaving machine operators" with a WAM concentration of 7.48 fibers/mL (f/mL); in the 1990s, "plastic products production machine operators" with 5.12 f/mL, and in the 2000s "detergents production machine operators" handling talc containing asbestos with 2.45 f/mL. Of the 112 exposure groups, 44 groups had higher WAM concentrations than the Korean occupational exposure limit of 0.1 f/mL. Conclusion: The newly constructed GPJEM which is generated from actual domestic quantitative exposure data could be useful in evaluating historical exposure levels to asbestos and could contribute to improved prediction of asbestos-related diseases among Koreans.

  • Normally consolidated and slightly overconsolidated soft clay layer is widely distributed in the south coast of Korea. To ensure the efficient and economical construction design of any structure to be built on this soft soil, exhaustive studies related to geotechnical and physical engineering properties are required. In this study, the relationship of the physical properties of southern Gwangyang marine clay in the Korea Peninsula were examined, including natural water content, specific gravity, total unit weight, initial void ratio, liquid limit, plastic limit, and physical properties of activity and soil parameters. For the parameter relationship analysis, the latest relatively reliable data on the large harbor construction work were used, optimum values were deducted with linear regression and non-linear regression between soil parameters, water content or initial void ratio appears to be very large. Moreover, in the linear and involution pattern regression, equal coefficient of determination appeared. The relationship of the different parameters was shown to be excellent in the non-linear regression of involution equation and exponential equation pattern compared with the findings of linear regression analysis.

  • Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP) composite with a higher specific strength and rigidity is more excellent than conventional metallic materials or other organic polymer of FRP. It has been widely used in vehicles, aerospaces and high technology industries which are associated with nuclear power fields. However, CFRP laminated composite has several disadvantages as like a delamination, matrix brittleness and anisotropic fibers that are the weak points of the crack initiation. In this present work, the reinforced silicon carbide(SiC) particles were added to the interlayer of CFRP laminates in order to mitigate the physical vulnerability affecting the cracking and breaking of the matrix in the CFRP laminated composite because of excellent specific strength and thermal shock resistance characteristics of SiC. The 1wt% of SiC particles were spread into the CFRP prepreg by using a spray coating method. After that, CFRP prepregs were laminated for the specimen. Also, the twill woven type CFRP prepreg was used because it has excellent workability. Thus the mechanical and fracture behaviors of the twill woven CFRP laminated composite reinforced with SiC particles were investigated with the acoustic emission(AE) method under a fracture test. The results show that the SiC particles enhance the mechanical and fracture characteristics of the twill CFRP laminate composite.

  • A new index for the buckling strength of non-structured plates is proposed. The external work or the deformation energy caused by the external loads or the boundary displacement controled by a load parameter is calculated along an equilibrium path of the member under consideration. If the second variation of the energy with respect to the parameter loses its positiveness, it defined as the limit of the stability. In contrast to the current method given in codes where the stability limit is evaluated by using only representative internal forces, the evaluation of the stability limit is always consistent even with the change of the distribution of the internal forces on the boundary. If the elasticity is concerned, the result from this proposed approach becomes identical to that from the classical methods.
