In 3 electrode reflective displays using a plastic substrate, unstable packaging induces particle clumping and optical degradation due to external air inflow and electronic ink evaporation. In this work, we fabricate 3 electrode electronic paper using glass wafer, ITO/plastic film, and ITO/glass/gas barrier film as an upper substrate after injecting electronic ink onto the lower substrate. Then, we studied its properties. After operating under stress conditions for 336 hours at $85^{\circ}C$ and 75% humidity, the reflectivity of driven e-paper panels with white color was 25.5% for the panels using glass wafer, 22.5% for plastic film including a gas barrier layer, and 16% for plastic film only. From these optical properties, we conclude that gas barrier film improves upper film isolation as a desirable packaging method.
We have fabricated transparent and flexible thin film transistor(TFT) on polyethylene terephthalate(PET) substrate using Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) film as active layer and electrode. The transfer printing method was used for printing the device layer on target plastic substrate at room temperature. This approach have an advantage to separate the high temperature annealing process to improve the electrical properties of ZnO TFT from the device process on plastic substrate. The resulting devices on plastic substrate presented mechanical and electrical properties similar with those on rigid substrate.

We report all-ink-jet printed inorganic/organic hybrid TFTs on plastic substrates. We have investigated the optimal printing conditions to make uniform patterned layers of gate electrode, dielectrics, source/drain electrodes, and semiconductor as a coplanar type TFT in a successive manner. All ink-jet printed devices have good mechanical flexibility and current modulation characteristic even when bent.
Pentacene thin film transistors fabricated without photolithographic patterning were fabricated on the plastic substrates. Both the organic/inorganic thin films and metallic electrode were patterned by shifting the position of the shadow mask which accompanies the substrate throughout the deposition process. By using an optically transparent zirconium oxide ($ZrO_2$) as a gate insulator and octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTMS) as an organic molecule for self-assembled monolayer (SAM) to increase the adhesion between the plastic substrate and gate insulator and the mobility with surface treatment, high-performance transistor with field effect mobility $.66\;cm^2$/V s and $I_{on}/I_{off}$>$10^5$ was formed on the plastic substrate. This technique will be applicable to all structure deposited at low temperature and suitable for an easy process for flexible display.
Over the last decade, dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) has attracted much attention due to the high solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency up to 10% as well as low cost compared with p-n junction photovoltaic devices. DSSC is composed of mesoporous TiO2 nanoparticle electrodes coated with photo-sensitized dye, the redox electrolyte and the metal counter electrode. The performances of DSSC are dependent on constituent materials and interface as well as device structure. Replacing the heavy glass substrate with plastic materials is crucial to enlarge DSSC applications for the competition with inorganic based thin film photovoltaic devices. One of the biggest problems with plastic substrates is their low-temperature tolerance, which makes sintering of the photoelectrode films impossible. Therefore, the most important step toward the low-temperature DSSC fabrication is how to enhance interparticle connection at the temperature lower than $150^{\circ}C$. In this talk, the key issues for high efficiency plastic solar cells will be discussed, and several strategies for the improvement of interconnection of nanoparticles and bendability will also be proposed.
A new technology realizing interconnection between Plastic Film LCDs panel and a driving circuit was developed under the processing condition of low temperature and pressure with ACFs developed for Plastic Film LCDs. The conduction failure of interconnection of the two resulted from elasticity, low thermal resistance and high thermal expansion of plastic substrates. Conductive particles with elasticity similar to the plastic substrate did not damaged a ITO electrode on plastic substrates, and low temperature and pressure process also did not deform the surface of plastic substrates. As a result highly reliable interconnection with minimum contact resistance was accomplished.
In this article, we described about the preparation and electrochemical properties of a flexible energy storage system based on a plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The PET treated with UV/ozone was fabricated with multilayer films composed of 30 polyaniline (PANi)/graphene oxide (GO) bilayers using layer-by-layer assembly of positively charged PANi and negatively charged GO. The conversion of GO to the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in the multilayer film was achieved using hydroiodic acid vapor at $100^{\circ}C$, whereby PANi structure remained nearly unchanged except a little reduction of doping state. Cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge curves of 30 PANi/RGO bilayers on PET substrate (shorten to PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET) exhibited an excellent volumetric capacitance, good cycling stability, and rapid charge/discharge rates despite no use of any metal current collectors. The specific capacitance from charge/discharge curve of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrode was found to be $529F/cm^3$ at a current density of $3A/cm^3$, which is one of the best values yet achieved among carbon-based materials including conducting polymers. Furthermore, the intrinsic electrical resistance of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrodes varied within 20% range during 200 bending cycles at a fixed bend radius of 2.2 mm, indicating the increase in their flexibility by a factor of 225 compared with the ITO/PET electrode.
Electroluminescence (EL) characteristics of green-emission ZnS:Cu,Cl-based ac-type inorganic powder electroluminescent structures were examined by inserting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into or next to the dielectric layer. For the top-emission type EL structure, where the luminescent light was emitted from the top of the structure, was fabricated by assembling in order, a top electrode, an emitting layer, a dielectric layer, and a bottom electrode from the top. $BaTiO_3$ powder mixed with CNTs was used as a dielectric layer or CNTs were deposited between the bottom electrode and $BaTiO_3$ dielectric layer in order to improve the role of the dielectric layer in the structure. Luminance of an EL structure with CNTs inclusion was greatly enhanced possibly due to the high dielectric constant in the dielectric layer of $BaTiO_3$/CNTs, which is one of hot research topics utilizing nano-objects for intensifying dielectric constant and reducing dielectric loss at the same time. A variation on the CNTs themselves and their inclusion methods in the dielectric layer has been exhorted, and the underlying mechanism for the role of CNTs in the EL structure will be explained in the poster. In order to extend the flexibility of EL devices, EL devices were fabricated on the paper substrate and their performance was compared other EL devices on the plastic-based substrate.
Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on plastic substrates have attracted much attention mainly due to extensive applications such as ubiquitous powers, as well as the practical reasons such as light weight, flexibility and roll-to-roll process. However, conventional high temperature fabrication technology for glass based DSSCs, cannot be applied to flexible devices because polymer substrates cannot withstand the heat more than $150^{\circ}C$. Therefore, low temperature fabrication process, without using a polymer binder or thermal sintering, was required to fabricate necked $TiO_2$. In this presentation, we proposed polymer-inorganic composite photoelectrode, which can be fabricated at low temperature. The concept of composite electrode takes an advantage of utilizing elastic properties of polymers, such as good impact strength. As an elastic material, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is selected because of its optical transparency and good adhesive properties. In this work, a polymer-inorganic composite electrode was constructed on FTO/glass substrate under low temperature sintering condition, from the mixture of PMMA and $TiO_2$ colloidal solution. The effect of PMMA composition on the photovoltaic property was investigated. Then, the enhanced mechanical stability of this composite electrode on ITO/PEN substrate was also demonstrated from bending test.

Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) films are the most extensively studied and commonly used as ones of TCO films. The ITO films having a high electric conductivity and high transparency are easily fabricated on glass substrate at a substrate temperature over $250^{\circ}C$. However, glass substrates are somewhat heavy and brittle, whereas plastic substrates are lightweight, unbreakable, and so on. For these reasons, it has been recently suggested to use plastic substrates for flexible display application instead of glass. Many reaearchers have tried to produce high quality thin films at rood temperatures by using several methods. Therefore, amorphous ITO films excluding thermal process exhibit a decrease in electrical conductivity and optical transparency with time and a very poor chemical stability. However the amorphous Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (IGZO) offers several advantages. For typical instance, unlike either crystalline or amorphous ITO, same and higher than a-IGZO resistivity is found when no reactive oxygen is added to the sputter chamber, this greatly simplifies the deposition. We reported on the characteristics of a-IGZO thin films were fabricated by RF-magnetron sputtering method on the PEN substrate at room temperature using 3inch sputtering targets different rate of Zn. The homogeneous and stable targets were prepared by calcine and sintering process. Furthermore, two types of IGZO TFT design, a- IGZO source/drain material in TFT and the other a- ITO source/drain material, have been fabricated for comparison with each other. The experimental results reveal that the a- IGZO source/drain electrode in IGZO TFT is shown to be superior TFT performances, compared with a- ITO source/drain electrode in IGZO TFT.
