Enhancement of Wear Resistance of CoCrNiAlTi Plasma Sprayed Coatings Using Titanium Carbide

  • Large drill bits may face high hardness ore and high working pressure when working. To optimize the use effect of large drill bits and prolong the use time, it is necessary to add a layer of pressure-resistant, wear-resistant, and low-friction coating on the surface of the drill bit. In this study, CoCrNiAlTi high-entropy alloy coatings and CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) composite coatings are successfully prepared on Q235 steel by plasma spraying. The CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) coating consists of FCC solid solution and a small amount of TiC phase. The effect of TiC on the composition phase, microhardness, and elastic modulus of HEA coating is studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and microhardness tester. The effect of TiC on the friction and wear properties of HEA coatings is investigated using a wear tester. By improving the process parameters, the metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate is well combined, and a coating without pores and cracks is obtained. The experimental results confirm that the microhardness, elastic modulus, and wear resistance of CoCrNiAlTi-TiC composite coating are better, and the friction coefficient is lower.

Fabrication, Microstructure and Adhesive Properties of BCuP-5 Filler Metal/Ag Plate Composite by using Plasma Spray Process (Plasma spray 공정을 이용한 BCuP-5 filler 금속/Ag 기판 복합 소재의 제조, 미세조직 및 접합 특성)

  • In this study, we fabricate a thin- and dense-BCuP-5 coating layer, one of the switching device multilayers, through a plasma spray process. In addition, the microstructure and macroscopic properties of the coating layer, such as hardness and bond strength, are investigated. Both the initial powder feedstock and plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer show the main Cu phase, Cu-Ag-Cu3P ternary phases, and Ag phase. This means that microstructural degradation does not occur during plasma spraying. The Vickers hardness of the coating layer was measured as 117.0 HV, indicating that the fine distribution of the three phases enables the excellent mechanical properties of the plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer. The pull-off strength of the plasma-sprayed BCuP-5 coating layer is measured as 16.5 kg/㎠. Based on the above findings, the applicability of plasma spray for the fabrication process of low-cost multi-layered electronic contact materials is discussed and suggested.

A Study on Improvement of the Ablation Resistance of Two Types of the Carbon/Carbon Composites by HfC Coating (하프늄카바이드 코팅을 통한 2종형상의 탄소/탄소복합재의 내삭마성 향상연구)

  • In this study, HfC was coated on two types of carbon/carbon composites coated with SiC by vacuum plasma spraying(VPS). The experiment was performed using a plasma wind tunnel with heat flux of 5.06 MW/㎡ for 120 s heat flux before and after the coating. The mass ablation rate was calculated through the mass change before and after the test, and the length change was measured by using calipers and high speed camera. The oxidation/ablation behavior were observed by FE-SEM with EDS analysis of the specimens cross section. The plasma wind tunnel test results showed that the coated specimens had low weight loss and length change, and high oxidation/ablation resistance. However, two types of the specimens tested under the same conditions were different in the ablation behavior and ablation rate, and it was evaluated that the cylindrical type had higher oxidation/ablation resistance.

Fabrication and Characteristic of ZrO2-8%Y2O3 Powder for Plasma Spray Coating Manufactured by Mechanical Mixing Method (기계적 혼합에 의한 플라즈마 용사용 ZrO2-Y2O3 분말의 제조 및 특성)

  • Thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) are being applied in many industrial fields such as thermal power generation, aviation and seasonal fields. $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal spray coating powders are commercially used as thermal-barrier coating materials to protect against oxidation and corrosion of heat-resistant alloys at elevated temperatures. Currently, $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) thermal-spray powder is made using the industrial co-precipitation process, which is very complex and requires a lot of time. In this study, orthorhombic $ZrO_2$ and $Y_2O_3$ powders were fabricated by mechanical mixing, which is more economical than the co-precipitation process. A tetragonal, yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) coating-layer was produced by plasma spraying, using orthorhombic $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) powder. Our experimental results indicate that $ZrO_2-Y_2O_3$(8%) mixed powder can be used economically in industry because it is no longer necessary to make this powder by liquid and gas-phase methods.

Microstructure Evolution of Cu-based BMG Coating during APS Process and Phase Analysis by Nano-indentation Test (대기 플라즈마 용사공정을 이용한 Cu계 벌크 비정질 금속 코팅의 미세조직 분석과 나노 압입시험을 이용한 상 분석)

  • In this study, Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) coatings were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process with different process conditions (with- and without hydrogen gas). As adding the hydrogen gas, thermal energy in the plasma flame increased and induced difference in the melting state of the Cu-based BMG particles. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the coatings were analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and nano-indentation tester in the light of phase analysis. It was elucidated by the nano-indentation tests that un-melted region was a mainly amorphous phase which showed discrete plasticity observed as the flow serrations on the load.displacement (P - h) curves, and the curves of solidified region showed lower flow serrations as amorphous phase mingled with crystalline phase. Oxides produced during the spraying process had the highest hardness value among the phases and were well mixed with other phases resulted from the increase in melting degree.

Microstructure and Hardness of Titanium Aluminide/Carbide Composite Coatings Prepared by Reactive Spray Method (반응성 스프레이방법으로 제작한 티타늄 알루미나이드/탄화물 복합박막의 미세조직과 경도)

  • A variety of composite powders having different aluminum and carbon contents are prepared using various organic solvents having different amounts of carbon atoms in unit volume as ball milling agents for titanium and aluminum ball milling. The effects of substrate temperature and post-heat treatment on the texture and hardness of the coating are investigated by spraying with this reduced pressure plasma spray. The aluminum part of the composite powder evaporates during spraying, so that the film aluminum content is 30.9 mass%~37.4 mass% and the carbon content is 0.64 mass%~1.69 mass%. The main constituent phase of the coating formed on the water-cooled substrate is a non-planar α2 phase, obtained by supersaturated carbon regardless of the alloy composition. When these films are heat-treated at 1123 K, the main constituent phase becomes γ phase, and fine Ti2AlC precipitates to increase the film hardness. However, when heat treatment is performed at a higher temperature, the hardness is lowered. The main constitutional phase of the coating formed on the preheated substrate is an equilibrium gamma phase, and fine Ti2AlC precipitates. The hardness of this coating is much higher than the hardness of the coating in the sprayed state formed on the water-cooled substrate. When hot pressing is applied to the coating, the porosity decreases but hardness also decreases because Ti2AlC grows. The amount of Ti2AlC in the hot-pressed film is 4.9 vol% to 15.3 vol%, depending on the carbon content of the film.

  • As environmental issue threatens to be aggravated, applications of bio-degradable plastic (Polybutylene Succinate:PBS) tend to be increased. However, improvement of mechanical characteristics of PBS is indispensable for further widespread actual applications. Therefore, in order to produce further functional P8S with improved mechanical characteristics, TiO$_2$ coatings on PBS substrate were prepared under various spraying conditions using plasma and HVOF spraying techniques. The effects of thermal spraying methods and spraying parameters on coating properties could be confirmed. Moreover, wear behavior for TiO$_2$ coatings on PBS substrate has been also reviewed and characterized.

Ti-based Quasicrystal Layers Produced by Plasma Thermal Spraying

  • [ $Ti_{45}Zr_{38}Ni_{17}$ ] powders were thermally sprayed onto mild steel substrates in air and under a reduced pressure of argon. Several oxides were formed after thermally-spraying the mechanically-alloyed powders in air. After spraying in a reduced pressure of argon, the coating layers obtained from the gently mixed powders consisted of the elemental metals, but an amorphous phase primarily appeared in the thermally-sprayed mechanically-alloyed powders, which transformed into the icosahedral quasicrystal phase and a minor $Ti_2Ni-type$ crystal phase after annealing at 828 K. The Vickers hardness and the contact angle with pure water for the quasicrystal layers were about 7 GPa and $92^{\circ}$ respectively.

  • For more effective temperature control of atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) zirconia thermal barrier coating, understanding of the parameters, which influence the substrate temperature, is essential and also more numerical results based on the experimental data are required. This study aims to investigate the substrate temperature control during an APS process. The APS process deals with air-cooled systems, plasma-gas flow, powder feed rate, robot velocity, and substrate effect on the substrate surface temperature control during the process. This systematic approach will help to handle the temperature control, and thus lead to better coating quality.

A Study on the high temperature oxidation behavior of zirconia plasma coatings on Haselloy X (Zirconala 용사된 Hastelloy X의 고온산화거동)

  • Finned segment, with which are lined inner wall of the turbine combustors, are subject to severe degradation when they are exposed to a hostile environmment at elevated temperature. To protect the finned segment from this environment and to maintain good mechanical properties of components at high temperature, they are preferred to be coated. The most governing factor for the durability of coatings used in the high temperature is the microstructure of coatings; these are splat from, distibution of microcacks, size and distribution of pores, thickness of coating layer, adhesion between coating layer, and oxidation of band coating. In this study, based on the evaluation of the imported finned segment, new finned segment segment was manufactured with optimum plasma spraying parameters, and their properties were examined. Using $ZrO_2(8wt$Y_2O_3)$,/TEX> powder for ceramic coating and 67Ni-22Cr-10Al-0.5Y mixing powder for bond coating, thickness of ceramic and bond coating layer were varied in order to find optimum condition, the results showed that B2T4(bond coating : 100~250$\mu\textrm{m}$, ceramic coating : 250~300$\mu\textrm{m}$) was the best among the specimens tested. Compared to the imported finned segment, B2T4 has better bond strength, hardness, and isothermal and cyclic oxidation resistance.
