Austenitic stainless steel (STS304) has been carburized using glow discharge plasma and its microstructure, wear resistance and corrosion property have been investigated. A repeat boost-diffuse carburizing was used as an effective plasma carburizing method. The effective case depth of the plasma carburized specimens was increased with the carbon concentration at the surface area. The specimens prepared by 3 hours plasma carburizing under $600^{\circ}C$ did not have the standard hardness for the effective case depth, but the specimen prepared by 11 hours plasma carburizing at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same hardness with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$. The wear resistance increased with temperature but the corrosion properties of the specimens prepared over $600^{\circ}C$ decreased rapidly due to the grain boundary sensitization. However, the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ had nearly the same wear resistance with the specimen plasma carburized for 3 hours at $800^{\circ}C$ without deterioration of corrosion property. This could be resulted from the fact that the microstructure of the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ was composed of martensite and austenite, because a partial martensite transformation was occurred only in the specimen plasma carburized for 11 hours at 50$0^{\circ}C$.

Cl-based gas chemistry is generally used to etching for Al alloy metallization. After the etching of Al alloy with Cl-based gas plasma, residual chlorine on Al alloy reacts with $H_2O$ due to air exposure and results in Al corrosion. In this study, the corrosion Phenomena of Al were examined with XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and SEF(Scanning electron microscopy). It was confirmed that chlorine mainly existed at the grain boundary of Al alloy after plasma etching of Al alloy with Cl-based gas chemistry and Al corrosion was largely generated at the grain boundary of Al a1loy. And residual chlorine was passivated by sulfur and fluorine which were generated by SF$_{6}$ plasma. These effects of passivation reduced the Al corrosion due to air exposure.e.

The corrosion failure of electronic devices has been a major reliability concern lately. This failure is an ongoing concern because of miniaturization of integrated circuits (IC) and the increased use of polymers in electronic packaging. Recently, plasma-polymerized cyclohexane films were considered as a possible candidate for a interlayer dielectric for multilever metallization of ultra large scale integrated (ULSI) semiconductor devices. In this paper the protective ability of above films as a function of deposition temperature and RF power in an 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution were examined by polarization measurement. The film was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and contact angle measurement. The protective efficiency of the film increased with increasing deposition temperature and RF power, which induced the higher degree of cross-linking and hydrophobicity of the films.

Magnesium and its alloys are prone to be corroded, thus surface treatments improving corrosion resistance are always required for practical applications. As a surface treatment of magnesium alloys, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), creating porous stable oxide layer by a high voltage discharge in electrolyte, enhances the corrosion resistance. However, due to superhydrophilicity of the porous oxide layer, which easily allow the penetration of corrosive media toward magnesium alloys substrate, post-treatments inhibiting the transfer of corrosive media in porous oxide layer are required. In this work, we employed a hydrophobizing method to enhance the corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy. Three types of hydrophobizing techniques were used for PEO layer. Thin Teflon coating with solvent evaporation, self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coating of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) based on solution method and SAM coating of perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) based on vacuum method significantly enhances corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy with reducing the contact of water on the surface. In particular, the vacuum based FDTS coating on PEO layer shows the most effective hydrophobicity with the highest corrosion resistance.
Development of biodegradable implants for treatment of complex bone fractures has recently become one of the priority areas in biomedical materials research. Multifunctional corrosion resistant and bioactive coatings containing hydroxyapatite $Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$ and magnesium oxide MgO were obtained on Mg-Mn-Ce magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation. The phase and elemental composition, morphology, and anticorrosion properties of the coatings were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PEO-layers were post-treated using superdispersed polytetrafluoroethylene powder. The duplex treatment considerably reduced the corrosion rate (>4 orders of magnitude) of the magnesium alloy. The use of composite coatings in inducing bioactivity and controlling the corrosion degradation of resorbable Mg implants are considered promising. We also applied the plasma electrolytic oxidation method for the formation of the composite bioinert coatings on the titanium nickelide surface in order to improve its electrochemical properties and to change the morphological structure. It was shown that formed coatings significantly reduced the quantity of nickel ions released into the organism.
For self-developed alkali-alkaline earth-silicate and commercial glass melts for plasma display panel substrate, the corrosion behavior of fused casting refractory consisting of $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2-SiO_2$ was examined at the temperature corresponding to $10^2\;dPa{\cdot}s$ of melt viscosity by static finger methode. The corroded refractory specimens showed a typical concave shape due to interfacial convection of melts at their flux line. However, the corrosion thickness by commercial glass melts was $6\sim10$ times comparing to that by the self?developed melts. From the view point of the glass composition and the role of alkaline earth in glass network, it was discussed the effect of alkali/alkaline earth diffusion and temperature on the refractory corrosion.
The characteristics, such as roughness, thickness, microhardness and corrosion resistance, of plasma electrolytic oxide coatings on AZ91D alloy were investigated under the processing condition of various coating times. The coatings on AZ91D alloy consisted of MgO, $MgAl_{2}O_{4}$ and $Mg_{2}SiO_{4}$ oxides. The surface roughness and thickness of coatings became larger with increasing the coating time. The microhardness in cross section of coatings was much higher than not only that in surface but that in the conventional anodic oxide coatings, which increased progressively as the coating time increased. After being immersed in 3.5%NaCl solution and methyl alcohol, the corrosion resistance of AZ91D alloy was markedly improved by plasma electrolytic oxidation coating treatment, and the AZ91D alloy coated for 50min revealed excellent corrosion resistance.

Corrosion characteristics of Ti, Ti/Cr coated and plasma-nitrided surface for stainless steel containing Ti have been studied. Stainless steels containing 0.09-0.92wt% Ti were fabricated by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1hr at 105$0^{\circ}C$. Ti and Cr coatings were done on solutionized stainless steel surface by EB-PVD. The Ti coated specimen were coated by Cr and were nitrided by plasma at $450^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. Microstructure and phase analysis were performed using SEM, OM and EDX. Corrosion behavior of the coated specimen was investigated by electrochemical test. The coated surface was of fine columnar structure. The Ti/Cr coated surface was denser than the Ti coated and the Ti coated-nitrided surfaces. The corrosion and pitting potential increased in proportion to the Ti content, coating temperature, coating thickness and formation of stable oxide film. The current density in active and passive region decreased in the case of Ti/Cr coated sample and Ti coated-nitrided samples. Especially the plasma nitrided specimen after Ti coating have a good corrosion resistance compared with the Ti coated specimen. The number and size of pits decreased as Ti content of matrix increased.

In this experiment, post-nitriding treatment was performed at $400^{\circ}C$ on AISI 316 stainless steel which was plasma carburized previously at $430^{\circ}C$ for 15 hours. Plasma nitriding was implemented on AISI 316 stainless steel at various gas compositions (25% $N_2$, 50% $N_2$ and 75% $N_2$) for 4 hours. Additionally, during post nitriding Ar gas was used with $H_2$ and $N_2$ to observe the improvement of surface properties. After treatment, the behavior of the hybrid layer was investigated by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-hardness testing. Potentiodynamic polarization test was also used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the samples. Meanwhile, it was found that the surface hardness increased with increasing the nitrogen gas content. Also small percentage of Ar gas was introduced in the post nitriding process which improved the hardness of the hardened layer but reduced the corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample. The experiment revealed that AISI 316L stainless steel showed better hardness and excellent corrosion resistance compared with the carburized sample, when 75% $N_2$ gas was used during the post nitriding treatment. Also addition of Ar gas during post nitriding treatment degraded the corrosion resistance of the sample compared with the carburized sample.
