  • This paper proposes the idea to enhance the heat transfer in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) by using the azimuthal magnetic field. The azimuthal magnetic field generated by the external currents makes the Lorentz force stronger, and consequently improves the heat transfer by the faster flow movement. The enhanced heat transfer might improve the welding performance by increasing the temperature at the workpiece. To validate the proposed idea, a two-dimensional axi-symmetric model of GTAW is built, and the multiphysics simulation of GTAW is carried out. As the analysis result, the distributions of electric current, electromagnetic fields, arc flow velocity, and temperature are investigated. Then, the proposed idea for heat transfer enhancement is validated by comparing the Lorentz force, flow velocity, and temperature distribution with and without azimuthal magnetic fields.

  • The physical display technology is the ultimate display technology that human beings aspire, and the world makes use of laser, plasma and reflector plate. Besides, technology development of binocular stereoscopic display has been actively progressed, but there is a limitation to the intact physical representation such as influence of optical ambient light and brightness. In this paper, the display technology using physical deformation different from the existing optical display is approached as a cultural and emotional perspective. The purpose of this paper is to develop the multivariate display technology that can create 3D realistic stereoscopic images through projecting dynamic images on physically diversified screen by overcoming the limitations of 2D planar digital signage and study how to apply them to video, exhibition and performance.

  • A novel quantum chemical molecular dynamics program, 'Colors' was developed to simulate the electronic structure of rare earth-doped phosphor materials as well as the destruction processes of MgO protecting layer in plasma display panel (PDP). We have also developed a quantitative prediction method based on Monte Carlo simulation technique to evaluate the electrical conductivity of insulators, semiconductors, and metals as well as the spatial distribution of electron density by Colors code. All these original simulators enable us to study theoretically a variety of materials related to PDP.

  • Hydrogenated amorphous silicon(a-Si:H) films which were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical deposition(PECVD) have been recrystallized by the two-step rapid thermal annealing(RTA) employing the halogen lamp. The a-Si:H films evolve hydrogen explosively during the high temperature crystallzation step. In result, the recrystallized polycrystalline silicon(poly-Si) films have poor surface morphology. In order to avoid the hydrogen evolution, the films have undergone the dehydrogenation step prior to the crystallization step Before the RTA process, the active area of thin film transistors (TFT's) was patterned. The prepatterning of the a-Si:H active islands may reduce thermal damage to the glass substrate during the recrystallization. The computer generated simulation shows the heat propagation from the a-Si:H islands into the glass substrate. We have fabricated the poly-Si TFT's on the silicon wafers. The maximun ON/OFF current ratio of the device was over $10^5$.

  • The diamond-like carbon(DLC) film, as an antireflection layer, is coated on a commerically used Ge window. DLC films are deposited by using an rf(13.56 MHz) plasma CVD. The optimal value of thickness and refractive index of DLC layer has been determined from the computer simulation. IR-transmittances of DLC-coated Ge windows are estimated by measuring FTIR spectra in the wavelength range of$ 2.5{\sim}25{\mu}m$. By coating the DLC film on one side of the Ge window, the transmittance measured at a wavelength of $10{\mu}m$ is about 60 %, while that of the bare Ge is lower than 50 %. Also, a higher transmittance up to about 90 % is obtained by coating the DLC film on both sides of the window. It may be suggested that the further improvement of the IR-transmittance can be achieved by more precisely controlling the thickness and the refractive index of DLC layer and also by adopting various muliti-layer antireflection structures.

  • To apply a square-shaped beam homogenizer to laser shock peening, it should be designed with a long working distance and by considering metal targets with various shapes and textures. For long working distances, a square-shaped beam homogenizer with a long depth of focus is required. In the range of working distance, the laser beam is required to have not only high efficiency but high uniformity, in other words, a good peening quality is guaranteed. In this study, we defined this range as the working distance for laser shock peening. We have simulated the effect of some parameters on the working distance. The parameters include the focal length of the condenser lens, pitch size of the array lens, and plasma threshold of the metal. The simulation was performed through numerical analysis by considering the diffraction effect.

  • We report the effect of density of thin films on moisture adsorption and hydration of MgO thin film, usually used as a protective layer in AC-PDP After hydration, lots of hemispherical shaped clusters, $Mg(OH)_2$, formed on the surface of MgO thin films. However clusters formed on low-density thin films were bigger than those on high-density films. From ERD spectra, it seemed that the concentration of hydrogen was very high in the region 20 nm from the surface of MgO thin film. The low-density thin film had more hydrogen than high-density thin film. From simulation results of ERD and RBS it was found that hydration reaction also occurred in the inner part of the film. So diffusion of Mg atoms from the inner part of the film to the surface and $H_2O$ molecules from the surface to the inner part of the film is important. And because low density thin film has many short paths for diffusion of Mg atoms and $H_2O$ molecules, low-density thin film is more hydrated. So to suppress hydration of MgO thin films, high-density thin film is needed.

  • An accurate cross sections set are necessary for the quantitatively understanding and modeling of plasma phenomena. By using the electron swarm method. we determine an accurate electron cross sections set for objective atoms or molecule at low electron energy range. In previous paper, we calculated the electron transport coefficients in pure $CF_4$ molecular gas by using two-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation. And by using this simulation method. we confirmed erroneous calculated results of transport coefficients for $CF_{4}$ molecule treated in this paper having 'C2v symmetry' as $C_{3}H_{8}$ and $C_{3}F_{8}$ which have large vibrational excitation cross sections which may exceed elastic momentum transfer cross section. Therefore, in this paper, we calculated the electron transport coefficients(W and $ND_L$) in pure $CF_4$ gas by using multi-term approximation of the Boltzmann equation by Robson and Ness which was developed at lames-Cook university, and discussed an application and/or validity of the calculation method by comparing the calculated results by two-term and multi-term approximation code.

  • An External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL) has longer lifespan, higher power efficiency and higher luminance than a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL). Moreover, it is easy to drive them in parallel. Therefore, the EEFL is expected to quickly replace the CCFL in LCD backlight systems. However, the EEFL has more complex characteristics than the CCFL with a resistive component, because it has both a resistive component by plasma and a capacitive component by external electrode. In this paper, values of resistance and capacitance are measured at several power levels and at several operating frequencies. They are expressed by a numeral formula based on a linear approximation that represents the equivalent resistance and capacitance as a function of power. Then we made block diagram of the equivalent circuit model using numerical expressions. Simulation waveforms and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the equivalent model.
