  • The nonlinear three-wave interaction is an interesting topic having various applications in nonlinear optics, hydrodynamics, acoustic waves, and plasma physics. The resonant interaction between two laser pulses and a plasma wave plays important roles in plasma heating, laser reflection in the inertial confinement fusion (ICF), plasma wakefield generation, and ultra-intense laser pulse amplification and pulse compression using stimulated Raman backscattering (RBS). • Target design study to improve the quality of an accelerated proton beam from the interaction of a high-intensity short pulse laser with an overdense plasma slab has been accomplished by using a two-dimensional, fully electromagnetic and relativistic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation. The target consists of a thin core part and a thick peripheral part of equivalent plasma densities, while the ratio of the radius of the core part to the laser spot size, and the position of the peripheral part relative to the fixed core part were varied. The positive effects of this core-peripheral target structure could be expected from the knowledge of the typical target normal sheath acceleration (TNSA) mechanism in a laser-plasma interaction, and were apparently evidenced from the comparison with the case of a conventional simple planar target and the case of the transversal size reduction of the simple planar target. Improvements of the beam qualities including the collimation, the forward directionality, and the beam divergence were verified by detailed analysis of relativistic momentum, angular directionality, and the spatial density map of the accelerated protons.

  • Atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma of the needle-typed interaction with aqueous solutions has received increasing attention for their biomedical applications [1]. In this context, surface discharges at bio-solutions were investigated experimentally. We have generated the non-thermal plasma jet bombarding the bio-solution surface by using an Ar gas flow and investigated the emission lines by OES (optical emission spectroscopy) [2]. Moreover, The non-thermal plasma interaction with bio-solutions has received increasing attention for their biomedical applications. So we researched, the OH radical density of various biological solutions in the surface by non-thermal plasma were investigated by Ar gases. The OH radical density of DI water; deionized water, DMEM Dulbecco's modified eagle medium, and PBS; 1x phosphate buffered saline by non-thermal plasma jet. It is noted that the OH radical density of DI water and DMEM are measured to be about $4.33{\times}1016cm-3$ and $2.18{\times}1016cm-3$, respectively, under Ar gas flow 250 sccm (standard cubic centimeter per minute) in this experiment. The OH radical density of buffer solution such as PBS has also been investigated and measured to be value of about $2.18{\times}1016cm-3$ by the ultraviolet optical absorption spectroscopy.

  • This paper shows the characteristics of microwaves in a plasma medium bounded by a waveguide. A standing wave detector which has VSWR less than 1.05 is designed and constructed. The electromagnetic waves which propagate through the plasma is reflected partly by the interaction between the external magnetic fields and plasma. The plasma is consisted of the electrons and positive ions ionized by high temperature of tungsten filament inserted in the waveguide. The transmitted power through the plasma was reduced by the amount of 1.5db from the reference.

  • Three hundred chicks were randomly assigned among four treatments to evaluate the effect of an organic selenium supplement at various levels of dietary protein. Two levels of supplemental selenium (0 and 0.3 mg/kg) from zinc-L-selenomethionine were tested at two levels of dietary protein (normal and reduced) in a completely randomized design with $2{\times}2$ factorial layout. The experiment lasted up to 49 d of age during which all birds were exposed to $31{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The effects of selenium or its interaction with CP on growth performance and carcass characteristics were not significant. However, feeding the reduced-CP diet decreased weight gain in the starting period and increased liver and abdominal fat weights relative to body weight. Ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) was not significantly affected by dietary CP and Se or their interaction though FRAP values were numerically higher in the Se-supplemented group. Dietary CP content did not affect the activity of plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), though Se significantly elevated plasma GSHPx activity. The interaction of CP and Se was not significant for FRAP and plasma GSHPx activity.

  • The spectra of scattering light fromlaser-produced plasma near its fundamental and second harmonic wavelength were observed respectively by means of spectroscopic technique. The experimental results and the generation mechanism of nonlinear effects such as the second garmonics and the brillouin scattering were analysed theoretically. The spectra of reflected laser light became wider than that of incident laser light. And the peak of spectrum of reflected light shifted to red-side from that of incident light. The second harmonic light is generated from the nonlinear interaction of the incident laser light and the electron plasma wave excited in resonance region by the oblique incidence of laser light to the plasma. The Brillouin backscattering from laser-produced plasmas of hydrogen and deuterium has shown an isotope effect in the red-side region of the generated second harmonic light. This isotope shift is explained by the parametric instability at the cutoff (resonance) region using frequency-and phase-matching conditions of the waves.

  • Interaction between flames and non-thermal plasmas of DBD type has been experimentally investigated. Vigorous streamers were observed under flame conditions because of the increase of reduced field (electrical) at high temperature as well as the seeding of free electrons and ions generated inside the flame. Flame lengths were significantly shortened as the applied voltage increased on account of intense mixing by ionic winds and soot-induced flows. Flame luminosities severely decreased under plasma conditions, which means the reduction of soot, since the residence time was reduced because of the flame shortening. Temperature and major species concentrations measured by FTIR were not changed despite the plasma generation. which shows overall chemistries were not affected by non-thermal plasmas.

  • Graphite crucibles are used for melting uranium and its alloys in VIM furnace. Various coating materials namely Al2O3, ZrO2, MgO etc. are applied on the inner surface of the crucibles using paint brush or thermal spray technique to mitigate U-C interaction. These leads to significant amount of carbon pick-up in uranium. In this study, the attempts are made to develop multilayer coatings comprising of SiC/Y2O3 and Mo/Y2O3 on graphite to study the feasibility of minimizing U-C interaction. The parameters are optimized to prepare SiC coating of about 70㎛ thickness using CVD technique on graphite coupons and subsequently Y2O3 coating of about 250㎛ thickness using plasma spray technique. Molybdenum and Y2O3 layers were deposited using plasma spray technique with 70㎛ and 250㎛ thickness, respectively. Interaction studies of the coated graphite with molten uranium at 1450℃ for 20 min revealed that Y2O3 coating with SiC interlayer provides physical barrier for uranium-graphite interaction, however, this led to the physical separation of coating layer. Y2O3 coating with Mo interlayer provided superior barrier effect showing no degradation and the coatings remained intact after interaction tests. Therefore, the Mo/Y2O3 coating was found to be a promising solution for minimizing carbon pick-up during uranium/uranium alloy melting.
