The re-bar work in the construction of nuclear power plants is difficult, due to the large diameter and the congestion of reinforcements. The mechanical anchorage offers a potential solution for this problem. However, the requirements or the standards for the shape of anchor plate of mechanical anchor has not been clearly established up to now. In this paper, the required performance of the mechanical anchorage for large diameter reinforcements in nuclear power plants are proposed, and the anchor plates are designed through nonlinear finite element analysis. The diameters of anchor plate are determined to be $\sqrt{5}$ times of reinforcement diameter for longitudinal reinforcements and $\sqrt{10}$ for shear reinforcements. The thickness of anchor plates is optimized as 0.3-0.35 times of reinforcement diameter for longitudinal reinforcements and 0.5~0.56 times for shear reinforcements.
This study aims to develop a strategy for South Korean companies to penetrate into the global NPP(nuclear power plant) market with their strength as the sixth biggest nuclear power generator in the world. With 20 nuclear plants in commercial operation and 6 more in construction, South Korea has the best technology in construction and operation of NPP. Despite these capabilities as demonstrated on its domestic market, Korean companies' constraint to enter and play a key role in global NPP market would be the lack of experience in overseas NPP projects, original technologies, and diplomatic effectiveness. This study analyzes the competitiveness of Korean standardized nuclear power plant, construction management skills, construction technologies, manufacturing equipment and materials and operation skills. In this research the current status of existing NPP and the forecast of building NPP according to countries was analyzed in order to work out strategies with technology, cost-effectiveness, and diplomatic consideration.

During the lifecycle of a nuclear power plant many organizations are involved in KOREA. Korea Plant Engineering Co. (KOPEC) participates in the design stage, Korea Hydraulic and Nuclear Power (KHNP) operates and manages all nuclear power plants in KOREA, Dusan Heavy Industries manufactures the main equipment, and a construction company constructs the plant. Even though each organization has a digital data management system inside and obtains a certain level of automation, data sharing among organizations is poor. KHNP gets drawing and technical specifications from KOPEC in the form of paper. It results in manual re-work of definition and there are potential errors in the process. A data warehouse based on a neutral model has been constructed in order to make an information bridge between design and O&M phases. GPM(generic product model), a data model from Hitachi, Japan is addressed and extended in this study. GPM has a similar architecture with ISO 15926 "life cycle data for process plant". The extension is oriented to nuclear power plants. This paper introduces some of implementation results: 1) 2D piping and instrument diagram (P&ID) and 3D CAD model exchanges and their visualization; 2) Interface between GPM-based data warehouse and KHNP ERP system.

Global warming due to greenhouse gases is an issue of great concern today. Fossil fuel power plants, especially coal-fired thermal power plants, are a major source of carbon dioxide emission. In this work, carbon capture and utilization using sodium hydroxide was studied experimentally. Application for flue gas of a coal-fired power plant is considered. Carbon dioxide, reacting with an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide, could be converted to sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$). A bench-scale unit of a reactor system was designed for this experiment. The capture scale of the reactor system was 2 kg of carbon dioxide per day. The detailed operational condition could be determined. The purity of produced sodium bicarbonate was above 97% and the absorption rate of $CO_2$ was above 95% through the experiment using this reactor system. The results obtained in this experiment contain useful information for the construction and operation of a commercial-scale plant. Through this experiment, the possibility of carbon capture for coal power plants using sodium hydroxide could be confirmed.

The purpose of this thesis was to provide the basic data for landscape architecture of apartment constructions and to minimize the users´ and builder´ loss in terms of finance and landscape due to defects in planting. After a review of literature related to defects of planting work, the researcher investigated the defects in planting of landscape plants on the basis of data from the drawing and defect-repair construction of 50 civil apartment complexes in Daegu and Kyongbook are from 1994 to 1998. The defect-ratio was analysed in terms of the species, shapes, and sizes of trees. It provides matters for consideration in terms of the design of the landscape planting on the apartment unit. It also provided the future directions for landscape architecture in apartment constructions with regard to the selection of the planting trees, etc., given statistics on defect occurrence. The causes of defect of the landscape planting trees were not studied accurately in this study due to the board range of researched area, the differences of the planting ground environment, the management ability, and the parameters of judging planting defects. It is recommended that those areas should be researched in the future.
This paper describes the forecast of power plant construction in a competitive korean electricity market. In Korea, KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation, fully controlled by government) was responsible for from the production of the electricity to the sale of electricity to customer. However, the generation part is separated from KEPCO and six generation companies were established for whole sale competition from April 1st, 2001. The generation companies consist of five fossil power companies and one nuclear power company in Korea at present time. Fossil power companies are scheduled to be sold to private companies including foreign investors. Nuclear power company is owned and controlled by government. The competition in generation market will start from 2003. ISO (Independence System Operator will purchase the electricity from the power exchange market. The market price is determined by the SMP(System Marginal Price) which is decided by the balance between demand and supply of electricity in power exchange market. Under this uncertain circumstance, the energy policy planners such as government are interested to the construction of the power plant in the future. These interests are accelerated due to the recent shortage of electricity supply in California. In the competitive market, investors are no longer interested in the investment for the capital intensive, long lead time generating technologies such as nuclear and coal plants. Large unclear and coal plants were no longer the top choices. Instead, investors in the competitive market are interested in smaller, more efficient, cheaper, cleaner technologies such as CCGT(Combined Cycle Gas Turbine). Electricity is treated as commodity in the competitive market. The investors behavior in the commodity market shows that the new investment decision is made when the market price exceeds the sum of capital cost and variable cost of the new facility and the existing facility utilization depends on the marginal cost of the facility. This investors behavior can be applied to the new investments for the power plant. Under these postulations, there is the potential for power plant construction to appear in waves causing alternating periods of over and under supply of electricity like commodity production or real estate production. A computer model was developed to sturdy the possibility that construction will appear in waves of boom and bust in Korean electricity market. This model was constructed using System Dynamics method pioneered by Forrester(MIT, 1961) and explained in recent text by Sternman (Business Dynamics, MIT, 2000) and the recent work by Andrew Ford(Energy Policy, 1999). This model was designed based on the Energy Policy results(Ford, 1999) with parameters for loads and resources in Korea. This Korea Market Model was developed and tested in a small scale project to demonstrate the usefulness of the System Dynamics approach. Korea electricity market is isolated and not allowed to import electricity from outsides. In this model, the base load such as unclear and large coal power plant are assumed to be user specified investment and only CCGT is selected for new investment by investors in the market. This model may be used to learn if government investment in new unclear plants could compensate for the unstable actions of private developers. This model can be used to test the policy focused on the role of unclear investments over time. This model also can be used to test whether the future power plant construction can meet the government targets for the mix of generating resources and to test whether to maintain stable price in the spot market.
The upturn of Korean nuclear power program can be considered to have started in early 70's while future plants for the construction of new nuclear power plane virtually came to a halt in United States. It is projected that power plant systems from combination of nuclear and coal fired types might shift to all coal fired type, considering the current trend of construction on the new Plants in the United States. However, with the depletion of natural resources, it is desirable to understand the utilization of two competitive utility technologies in terms of invested energy. Presented in this paper is a comparison between two systems, nuclear power plant and coal fired steam power plant in terms of energy investment. The method of comparison is Net Energy Analysis (NEA). In doing so, Input-Output Analysis (IOA) among industries and commodities is done. Using these information, net energy ratios are calculated and compared. NEA is conducted for power plants in U. S. because the availability of necessary data are limited in Korea. Although NEA does not offer conclusive solution, this method can work as a screening process in decision making. When considering energy systems, results from such analysis can be used as a general guideline.
Safety diagnosis of various structural components and facilities is indispensable for preventing catastrophic failure of material by time-dependent and environment accelerating degradation. Also, this diagnosis of operating components should be done periodically for safe maintenance and economical repair. However, conventional standard methods for mechanical properties have the problems of bulky specimen, destructive procedure and complex procedure of specimen sampling. So, a non-destructive and simple mechanical testing method using small specimen is needed. Therefore, an advanced indentation technique was developed as a potential method for non-destructive testing of in-field structures. This technique measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation such as yield strength, tensile strength and work-hardening index. In this paper, we characterized the tensile properties including yield and tensile strengths of the V-modified Cr-Mo steels in petro-chemical and thermo-electrical plants. And also, the effects of hydrogen-assisted degradation of the V-modified Cr-Mo steels were analyzed in terms of work-hardening index and yield ratio.

With recent attempts to improve quality and productivity, the prefabrication manufacturing system has been occupying an increasing share of the construction area. To minimize site work, material is more frequently being produced and partially assembled at a plant, and then installed at a site. For this reason, the production process is being divided and the materials are being delivered to the site after passing through multiple plants. With these changes in the production process, the materials delivery plan is becoming an important management point. In particular, as road transportation using trucks has a 71 percent share of the domestic transportation market, selecting the proper transportation path is important when delivering materials and equipment to a site. But the management system at the project design phase to calculate the delivery cost by considering the production process of the pre-fab material and the $CO_2$ emission at the material delivery phase is currently lacking. This study suggests a process design model for assembly production of the pre-fab material and transportation logistics based on carbon emission. The suggested model can be helpful to optimize the location of the intermediate plant. It is expected to be utilized as a basic model at the project plan and design phase when subcontractors make decisions on items such as materials procurement, selecting the production method, and choosing the location of the assembly plant.

Nuclear power plant projects are being increased all over the world. The construction of nuclear power plants needs huge money and time, which makes conducting a detailed analysis of productivity through the whole process. Reinforced-concrete works productivity field data was collected for more than one year and analyzed from a nuclear-power-plant project in Korea. The productivities of formwork, rebar-work, and concrete pouring were $0.54m^2/man{\cdot}day$, $0.06ton/man{\cdot}day$, $1.98m^3/man{\cdot}day$, respectively. Moreover, it is revealed that 'Day of the Week' is a driver of the formwork activity and 'Overtime' is for all of the three. The results will be a great interest of industry personnel estimating time and cost of a new nuclear power plant.
