Garlic is an important crop, accounting for 1.1 trillion won out of 3.7 trillion won for the total production of seasoned vegetables in Korea. On the other hand, the cultivation area and production volume are decreasing continuously due to the shortage of an agricultural labor force, aging, and insufficient mechanization. In particular, the mechanization of garlic sowing is barely performed, resulting in large amounts of labor. Therefore, it is necessary to study the mechanization of planting garlic. Therefore, in this study, to determine the optimal working conditions for mechanical sowing of garlic, an experiment was conducted to compare the yield according to the sowing angle and depth of garlic during sowing. After sowing using a seeding machine set under optimal conditions, the conventional work and yield were compared. The results showed that it is most appropriate to sow garlic with a sowing angle of 45° or 90° and a depth of 2 cm to 4 cm, and there is no difference in the yield between sowing with a sowing machine and conventional work.

Purpose: This research was conducted to determine the design factors of a seed-metering device for the development of a seeder. The device allows the seeder to sow precisely one to three seeds of foxtail millet and sorghum. To obtain fundamental information regarding the design of the seed-metering device, examination of the physical properties of foxtail millet and sorghum was conducted. Methods: Based on the results of an adaptability test using an existing seeder with foxtail millet and sorghum, an experimental roller-type seed-metering device was made. The seeding factors considered during the experiment were the width, length, and depth, as well as the shape of the groove in the seed-metering roller. By adapting an analysis of variance, the experimental results of the seeding factors were analyzed. Results: The measured results of the respective lengths and widths of the seeds were 2.11 and 1.64 mm for foxtail millet, and 3.68 and 3.32 mm for sorghum, respectively. The weight of 1,000 seeds was 2.43 g for foxtail millet and 17.5 g for sorghum. The seeds were of an elliptical shape, considering the length and width. A sieve analysis showed that the size distribution of foxtail millet was quite regular whereas that of sorghum was irregular. Conclusions: The seeding results showed that the rates of incorrect planting were low when the groove of the roller-type metering device is an elliptical type. To sow one to three seeds, the groove of roller-type metering devices $2.0mm{\times}4.0mm{\times}1.5mm$ ($width{\times}length{\times}depth$) for foxtail millet, and $4.0mm{\times}8.0mm{\times}3.0mm$ and $4.5mm{\times}8.0mm{\times}3.0mm$ ($width{\times}length{\times}depth$) for Sorghum.

This study was carried out to examine the proper site for Pinus rigida ${\times}$ P. taeda. The 91 sample plots ($20{\times}10m$) were selected from the plantations located in middle part of Korea. Soil, environmental and climatic factors were investigated and regressed on the growth of Pinus rigida ${\times}$ taeda. (1) The factors which influenced strongly on the growth were temperature, elevation, soil moisture, physiographic position, slope, soil depth, wind protection, soil compactness and soil organic matter contents in order. (2) The most effective factors among them were temperature, elevation, soil moisture and physiographic position. (3) General conditions of proper site for planting the hybrid pine were above $-8^{\circ}C$ in mean minimum temperature in January, below 200m in elevation, moderate soil moisture, and valley or flat area in physiographic position.
Several experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of external factors on germination and emergence of Eclipta prostrata (L.)L. The weight of viable achenes doubled as a result of 90 minutes soaking in water. The germination of E. prostrata was significantly improved by alternating temperatures. At a constant temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, only 78% of the achenes germination, whereas at alternating temperatures of 35/$20^{\circ}C$, 96.5% of the achenes germinated. E. prostrata was more sensitive than rice to moisture stress. No germination of E. prostrata achenes occurred in the absence of oxygen. No germination of E. prostrata achenes occurred in the dark or when they were exposed to green, blue, and far-red light. Germination of E. prostrata achenes was influenced by the duration of illumination after absorption of water. Ten hours of illumination was needed for maximum germination and 2 hours for 50% germination. No significant changes in germination of E. prostrata achenes were observed between pH 3 and 10. A high tolerance of E. prostrata achenes to salt was observed. Emergence of E. prostrata achenes was greatly affected by planting depth. In the upland soil, 74.0% of the achenes planted on the soil surface germinated, and no emergence was at planting depths of 0.5 cm or greater.

There are differences in opinion as to whether nitrogen fertilizer should be used when establishing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Various reports show that under a hot environment, rhizobia (Rhizobium meliloti) are not as effective in fixing atmospheric nitrogen as they are under moderate temperatures. It is also believed that the addition of nitrogen fertilizer inhibits nodulation of alfalfa seedlings. A replicated experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions at the University of Nevada-Reno, Reno, Nevada, USA, to determine the effects of nitrogen application on seedling growth and nodulation of alfalfa grown in a hot environment. Sterile sand was used as the growing media to which a complete nutrient solution minus nitrogen was applied volumetrically to each pot daily. In addition, half of the pots received NH4-$NO_3$, at the rate of 11.2 kg per ha at seeding and at two and four weeks after planting giving a total nitrogen application rate of 33.6 kg per ha during the seven-week experimental period. Rhizobia inoculant (R-12) consisted of a mixture of strains 171-15a, 1682c and 80 PI 265 of (Rhizobium meliloti). Inoculant was applied to the seeds prior to planting and to the sand media at two and four weeks after seeding. Twenty seeds were planted in pots 14.0 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm deep. Plants were thinned to ten plants per pot after emergence and were grown in a controlled environment chamber with a 16-hour light period. Soil temperature at 6 cm depth ranged from 17.4^{\circ}C.$ to 31.1^{\circ}C.$ and had a daily mean of 26.5^{\circ}C.$. Plants were harvested at weekly intervals for seven weeks. Root, shoot and total length, dry weight, volume and number of nodules per plant were determined. Root, shoot, and total length were greater in seedlings grown in soil where nigrogen was applied than that grown in soil to which no nitrogen was applied. The average size of the seedlings as determined by volume and weight was more than two times greater where plants were fertilized with nitrogen. Nodule number per seedling was also greater when nitrogen was applied compared to those which received no nitrogen. The differences were greater as the plants became older. The rhizobia did not fix enough nitrogen for adequate growth of seedlings. This is probably due to high temperature growing conditions that caused the rhizobia to become relatively ineffective as compared to cooler growing conditions. Data suggests it would be desirable to apply nitrogen at seeding when alfalfa is established under hot conditions that occur in mid- or late summer.

There are differences in recommendations in the USA as to whether nitrogen fertilizer should be applied when establishing alfalfa (Medicago sativa L). The reason for not applying nitrogen is because some researchers found the addition of nitrogen reduced nodulation of alfalfa plants. A replicated experiment was conducted under controlled environmental conditions at the University of Nevada-Reno, Reno, Nevada, USA, to determine the effects of nitrogen application on seedling growth and nodulation of alfalfa when grown in a cool environment. A sterile sand was used in the growing media to which a complete nutrient solution minus nitrogen was applied volumetrically to each pot daily. Half of the pots received $NH_4NO_3$, at the rate of 11.2 kg/ha, at seeding and two and four weeks after planting, giving a total nitrogen application rate of 33.6 kg/ha. Rhizobia inoculant (R-12) consisted of a mixture of strains 171-15a. 1682c and 80 PI 265 of Rhizobium meliloti. Inoculant was applied to the seeds prior to planting and to the sand media at two and four weeks after seeding. Twenty seeds were planted in pots 14.0 cm in diameter and 11.5 cm deep. Seedlings were thinned after emergence to ten plants per pot. They were grown in a controlled environment chamber with a 16-hour light period. Soil temperatures at 6 cm depth ranged from $5.7^{\circ}C\;to\;21.5^{\circ}C$ and had a daily mean of $16.2^{\circ}C$ Plants were harvested at weekly intervals for seven weeks at which time root, shoot and total length, dry weight, volume and number of nodules per plant were determined. Root, shoot and total length were not affected by nitrogen fertilizer. However, application of nitrogen increased the size of the seedlings as determined by dry weight and volume when compared to plants which were not fertilized. This indicates that rhizobia did not fix enough atmospheric nitrogen to promote good growth. Nitrogen application resulted in significantly more nodules per plant. The effect of nitrogen fertilizer became more apparent as the plant became older. Results of this experiment show there are benefits from applying nitrogen at a low rate when establishing alfalfa under a cool environment.
This experiment was conducted to acquire the basic data necessary for the artificial pond greening. Eighty four hydrophytes collected from 11 domestic small ponds and a farm were used in this experiment. The size of the artificial pond used was $6m{\times}3m{\times}1.5m(length{\times}width{\times}depth)$. Twelve months after planting, species were selected for their high ornamental values and tissue contents of N and P in each month. Tissue contents of N in Trapha nantan, Nymphoides indica, Nymphaea hybrid, and Murdannia keisak were high. Tissue contents of P in Monochoria vaginalis and Murdannia keisak were also high. The pH of artificial pond stabilized at a 6.8~7.6 range from May 2005 to March 2007. The EC was low in summer and high in autumn. From April to October, 5, 19, 23, 32, 31, 28, and 26 species, respectively, were selected for artificial pond greening. One year after planting, vegetation changed from 78 species (Potamogeton octqandrus, Salvinia natans, Potamogeton malaianus, etc.) to 38 species (Scirpus tarbernaemontani, Scirpus karuizawensis, Scirpus triqueter, etc.). Species diversity in the artificial pond was as follows, indicating it being a stabilized artificial pond; 38 species, 1,437 total number of plants, species richness index of 11.72, and maximum diversity index of 0.97.

The purpose of this study is to provide base information that can be utilized in surveying the status of landscape management within apartment complexes and grasping the conditions of the soil for planting plants, as a way to improve the quality of green spaces by repairing poorly vegetated spaces within apartment complexes and remodeling them with diverse species of plants. Considering that trees and shrubs of equal sizes are simultaneously planted upon the completion of apartment complexes, they were divided based on their completion year at the interval of 5 years and differences in the growth of trees and the components of soil over time were analyzed. Out of the species of trees planted in all the 9 apartment complexes surveyed in this study, the growth of 4 species of needleleaf trees and 4 species of broadleaf trees were surveyed. Juniperus chinensis 'Kaizuka' and Pinus densiflora Siebold & Zucc. out of the needleleaf trees and Malus floribunda Siebold ex Van Houtte out of the broadleaf trees showed the highest growth rate when over 5 years passed after planting and their growth rate decreased when over 10 years passed. Platycladus orientalis and Acer palmatum Thunb. in the apartment complexes that were built over 10 years ago showed the highest growth rate, which indicates that the species require a relatively long period of time for growth. The hardness of the soil at the areas where trees were planted but their soil surface was bare was analyzed. When over 5 years passed after the completion of apartment complexes, over 20 mm of the soil was found to be stamped. The physicochemical properties of soil were also surveyed and the pH level was found to have been continuously high ever since the completion. The organic content in the surveyed soil was about 1/3 of the content in fertile soil, which means that additional fertilization is required. These results indicate that the stamped soil and the health of soil can be restored, when replanting plants in bare areas, by adding plans to improve soil, such as designing drain ways around the planted areas, transporting soil for the 50 cm depth of the ground and mixing organic matters such as chaff, and simply by planting groundcover plants in the lower part of tress and shrubs.

The purpose of this research was to investigate water spaces such as marshes and watercourses, especially focusing on methods to establish eco-ponds. Many aqua-ecosystems have been filled up or destroyed in the process of rapid industrialization and urbanization in the cities. This inquiry was done by comparing, studying and analyzing existing ponds and studying documents on the introduction and methods of making eco-ponds. Existing ponds were put into three categories as the either eco-pond, man-made/natural ponds, or man-made ponds. Three instances were selected for each category, totaling nine. Data on the size and shape, depth, waterproofing techniques, water supply, plants and planting plan, and the maintenance of the ponds was collected and compared. The following are conclusions based on comparing, studying and analyzing these existing ponds, and studying documents on the introduction and methods of making eco-ponds. ${\cdot}$ It is noteworthy that different environments and depths must be provided because these are main variants contributing to attracting plants in the ponds. ${\cdot}$ In these places plants emerged, such as, floating-leaved plants, free-floating planktonic plants, submerged plant etc, in the different water level zones, once these various conditions were provided. ${\cdot}$ Various spaces can be used for shelter, places for relaxation and habitation. ${\cdot}$ After establishing a pond, routine maintenance is necessary for preventing eutrophication. However the minimal possible management should be done to maintain a natural status.
Root-lesion nematode (Pratylenchus vulnus) and pin nematode (Paratylenchus sp.) were detected with high population density at the spray chrysanthemum greenhouse in Gumi, Gyeongbuk. The average density of P. vulnus and Paratylenchus sp. was 667 and 716 nematodes per 100 g soil and P. vulnus density were distributed 87% to the depth of $0{\sim}30$ cm in greenhouse. When spray chrysanthemum cv Chopin, was transplanted in September 2004 in greenhouse, P. vulnus were 854 nematodes/100 g soil in planting and increased 14,985 nematodes/100 g soils and 1g root after 10 weeks in harvest. Shoot weight and shoot height of spray chrysanthemum decreased 24.8% and 8.0% compared with non-infested P. vulnus after 10 weeks in greenhouse.
