  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of growth characteristics and mineral contents of ginseng seedling grown in different locations on ginseng growth and root yield. Ginseng seedling produced in 16 farmers' field at the semi-Yangjik seedbed were planted and cultivated in a field with same cultural practices. Missing plant was increased with increased year of ginseng age, especially severe at 5-year-old ginseng. Rate of missing plant was different among the origins of the seedling, even with the same weights. Negative correlation was noted between the missing rate of 3-year-old ginseng plants and NH4-N content of the seedling, but positive correlation between the missing rate and K2O and Ca contents of the seedling. Root yield of 6-year-old ginseng was also affected by the origins of ginseng seedlings. Root yield was high in ginseng plant from 0.6∼0.9 g see dings compared to those from over 0.9 g seedlings.

  • In 61 abolished ginseng fields examined in 1986, the average plant missing was 49.2%, root rusting, 34.4%, and root rot, 3.3%. Plant missing was not different among the ages of ginseng fields; however, rate of root rusting was high in 3- and 4-year-old ginseng fields, and rate of root rot was high in 5- and 6-year-old ginseng fields, suggesting that root rusting and root rot were relatively more important factors related to the abolishment of ginseng filed in younger and older ginseng fields in 1986, respectively. Out of 61 ginseng fields, 18 were infested with more than 509) alternaria blights, and out of 19 fields with root rot, 2 were caused by Sclerotinia sp., 5 by potato rot nematode, and the causal agents were not identified in 12 fields. With increase of the ridge height, root rusting was significantly decreased, and plant missing rate was significantly lower in fields with straw mulching than those without mulching. The physico-chemical characteristics of the fields with more than 50fi root rusting, the contents of $NO_3,\;P_2O_5$ and Ca were higher than those of good fields with less than 40% root rusting and plant missing. The population of Erwinia sp. was significantly corralled with plant missing.

  • The study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil physico-chemical properties between soils of preplanting fields and 2 years old ginseng fields, and compare the missing plant rate among the 2 years 016 ginseng fields. 1, The missing plant rate of 2 years old ginseng was high in sand loam while low in clay loam soil texture, soil porosity and NO3-N were remarkably increased in 2 years old ginseng field than preplanting soil, as the clay content was increased, soil porosity seemed to be increased but exchangeable nitrogen decreased. 2. The preplanting soil management methods did not significantly influenced on the missing plant rate and soil porosity in 2 years old ginseng fields, However NO3-N content and Fusarium density seemed to be decreased as the plow frequency was increased, exchangeable nitrogen content, whereas, seemed to be increased with more organic matter. 3. Differences of clay content (below 15% and above 20% of clay content) was significantly influenced on soil porosity, bulk density, total nitrogen, organic matter and P2O5 content. 4, Missing rate showed negative correlation with clay, soil moisture, and organic matter content but positive corelation with NO3-N in 2 years old ginseng fields.

  • Root yield, number of missing and diseased plant in each line were investigated in various ginseng farms. Root yield per unit area was negatively correlated to missing percentage. Missing percentage showed significant positive correlation with diseased rate. Among lines yield was significantly different in most fields while missing rate was not, indicating that yield of each line is affected by present shading method but disease occurrence is not. Thus there are two ways of yield increase, shading improvement and disease control.

  • In order to find out the application effect of commercial organic fertilizer on the germination rate of ginseng seed, growth of ginseng plant and changes of the physicochemical properties of soils, a Miwon organic fertilizer, byproduct of amino acid fermentation, was applied to the ginseng nursery bed. The application rates of Miwon organic fertilizer were 0kg-N from organic fertilizer and 30kg-N from wild grass compost per 10a as control(namely 0kg-N/10a), 2.5kg-N and 27.5kg-N/ 10a(2.5kg-N/10a) 5.0kg-N and 25kg-N/10a(5.0kg-N/10a), 10kg-N and 20kg-N/10a(10kg-N/10a), 15kg-N and 15kg-N/10a(15kg-N/10a) respectively, The obtained results are as follows: 1. The germination rate of ginseng seed were better in the plots that received 2.5kg, 5.0kg and 10kg-N/10a as compared with control plot. However no difference was found on germination rate between control and 15kg-N/10a, 2. The higher rate of missing plant was found in the 15kg-N/10a plot that showed poor growth. However control and 10kg-N/10a plot showed similar rate of missing plant. The best result, lower rate of missing plant, was obtained in the order of 5kg-N and 2.5kg-N/10a respectively. 3. The significant heavier ginseng root weight was obtained in 5kg-N/10a and 10kg-N/10a plot. However the root weight was decreased in the order of 2.5kg-N/10a, control, 15kg-N/10a. 4. In the physicochemical changes of soils between control and organic fertilizer treated soil before and after harvesting the increment of pH, C.E.C. and organic matter content along with the rate of organic fertilizer application were found. There were significant correlation between nitrate nitrogen and the rate of organic fertilizer application. 5. In the view points of germination rate, missing rate of plant and yield of ginseng root, it can be stated that the best result could be obtained from the plot that received 10kg-N/10a from Miwon commercial organic fertilizer and 10kg-N/10a from wild grass compost.

  • When sowing green peas in the autumn, proper seedling stands and growth quantity should be secured before winter begins. Also, for proper acclimatization, injuries caused by low temperatures, frost or high temperatures in the P.E. film during mulching, should be avoided during the regeneration period; that being early spring. The days required for growth in each stage in Yeosu are shorter than those in Naju because Yeosu has high temperatures during the growth period. Furthermore, in Yoesu, it was observed that there were more effective branches as well as effective and attached node positions on the branches. The first pods on the main stems and effective branches were observed to be higher than those in Naju. The number of pods per plant and the number of seeds per pod in Yoesu was greater than for those in Naju and the pod length was longer as well. Considering the missing plant rate, growth, and green pod yield, the optimum sowing date for the green pea was mid-November in both location. The stable acclimatizing date for the green pea was early March when the highest yield can be acquired due to a lot of effective branches and pods per plant and with the lowest missing plant rate and rate of injury in acclimatization.

  • To determine the effects of mulching with the hulls of rice on the growth of the ginseng plant and changes of its growing environment-soil moisture content. subterranccan temperature and soil hardness- were investigated under different light intensity such as 5%, 10%, 20%, and 30% light transmittance rate(LTR). The results obtained were as follows; 1. Soil moisture content under the shading was decreased as the increase of light intensity, whereas it was increased about 1.5% in each plot of LTR by the mulching. 2. Suberranccan temperature under the shading was increased as the increase of light intensity. It was decreased on a hot day by the mulching but increased on a cold day. 3. Soil hardness was decreased by the mulching. 4. Sprouting date of the ginseng plants was acclerated for 7 days and sprout periods were shortened for f days by mulching compared to the non-mulching treatment. 5. Missing plant rate was increased severely as the increase of light intensity more Than 20% LTR In the non-mulching plots but did not severe in the mulching plots. Missing plant rate was decreased remarkably by the mulching. The degree of decrease was larger as the increase 6f light intensity. 6. Root yield was increased in the mulching plots compared to the non$.$mulching plots. The degree of increase was larger as the increase of light intensity. The highest yield was obtained at 20% LTR with mulching.

  • The effect of soil physico-chemical properties of pre and post soil preparation and permanent bed period on growth and yield was analysed by two models of annual variation and percent annual change (PAC). 1. Aggregation, porosity, bulk density except moisture were significantly different in each year from preparation to the 6th year while all soil chemical properties except Mg were significantly different in each year. 2. Soil physical properties showed significant simple correlation with yield and negative with the missing plant rate in each year while the electroconductivity ($EC_5$) of the 4th year showed significant correlation with yield. 3. Yield showed significant positive correlation with the variation of aggregation in permanent bed period, and negative with variation and PAC of aggregation of preplanting soil and variation of moisture in permanent bed period. Missing plant rate was negatively correlated with porosity variation of preplanting soil and positively with PAC of aggregation in preplanting soil and of moisture in permanent bed period. 4. According to multiple regression between yield and soil physical properties, porosity of preplanting soil was in the greatest contribution. Among aggregations, the variation in permanent bed period was in the greatest contribution.

  • This study was conducted to know the elects of light intensity of polyethylene net shading on the growth status, photosynthesis and root yield of ginseng plants. Polyethylene net shading of loft transmittance was the best one among light intensities of polyethylene net used in view of photosynthesis and decreasing of early leaf defoliation. According to increase of light intensity under the shading chlorophyll contents of ginseng leaves were decreased. As it was increased over 2 mg/g Photosynthesis and total saponin of leaves showed on the decrease remarkably. The rate of alternaria blight of ginseng plants showed the positive correlation between light intensity and leaking rate. The shading of 10% transmittance in root yield was increased by 40% in 6-year-old ginseng plant as compared with common straw shading, due to decreased missing plant and increased root weight.
