  • In general, the attitude of a high-speed planning boat changes following a speed change. Since the hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship differ according to the change of its underwater shape, it is difficult to estimate its hydrodynamic force compared to that of a large commercial ship. In this paper, 6 Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) equations of motion that express the maneuvering motion of a planning boat are modeled by analyzing its motion characteristics based on various sea trial tests. Finally, a maneuvering simulation is carried out and a validation of the equations of motion is confirmed with the results of sea trial tests.

  • It is hard to find experimental data for a model test of small high-speed planning boats. It is difficult to verify the performance seen in a model test for a high-speed boat because the ship-model scale-ratio is very small and the flow velocity of the circulating water channel and the X-carriage speed of the towing tank are restricted. Therefore most hull-form designs for high-speed small boats depend on the sea-trial test result for similar boats or evaluation through numerical calculations. This study investigated the anti-rolling effect of the stern sub-body in a 50-knot doss planning boat. To carry out this work, new model test procedures were set up in the actual sea. Using this method, the anti-rolling effect of the stern sub-body was investigated. A stern sub-body attached to a planning boat was proved to be effective in reducing the roll and pitch angle.

  • In this study, the numerical simulation and basin model test have been performed to evaluate sea worthiness and resistance performance for a small pre-planning three type of leisure boats which are U, V, Y shapes of hull forms. As a well known commercial CFD code, Maxsurf, was applied for modeling hull forms used as the solver of motion analysis. Also the model resistance test was carried out to estimate the effective power of boat in the basin tank. Numerical simulation and model test results show that Y-shaped hull is better than the other types in terms of heave and pitch motion, having a key effect on a boat sea worthiness. But V-type hull is more efficiency than others cases in resistance performance.

  • Water jet propulsion system has high efficiency on middle to high speed, and it provides better safety than conventional screw propeller because it has not projected propeller and rudder. So many leisure boat and high-speed ferries use this propulsion system. We developed water-jet propulsion unit for small planning boat, and launched that in the boat, after that we tested water-jet unit in the lake. As a result, we certify heat dissipation at the bearing housing and reverse duct's shape for neutral position are important at the design, and alignment water-jet unit and keel line are important at the launching, and ship's resistance performance and jet's propulsion performance also are needed to consideration.

  • There are the C.W.C and Towing Tank to the model-test equipments of the boat. A model testing of the high speed boat have a difficult in the performance verification because of very a small the scale-ratio of the ship-model and restricted by flow-velocity of the C.W.C and X-carriage velocity of the T.T. In general, the stepped hull boat is a high of fuel-efficiency because of the resistance reduction by a small wetted surface-area in correspond without stepped-hull boat. But It have a tendency to be bad the rolling performance by reduced stern wetted-area In this paper, the high speed stepped planning-boats with & without attached a stern body were performed to compare the effect of resistance and rolling performance by using sea model-test method.

  • This study is concerned with the development of the basic planing hull form of small fishing boat in 25 knots high speed. A series of model test to determine the optimum performance hull form of actual fishing boat with 10 gross tonnage was carried out for 5 models made available planing hull form in the circulation water channel. Model test was performed with the resistance test to study the hydrodynamic characteristics of model ships and the sinkage and trim measurement to investigate the stability of model ships and also the wave pattern observation to analyze the effectiveness of model ships. As the result, the planing hull form of P-4 with deep V type bow can be derived as the best hull form with good performance especially in ship's resistance efficiency showing less residual resistance and sinkage and trim and the spray effect, etc..

  • Initial hull form of 10 G/T and 40 knots class coastal patrol boat is newly developed. The resistance performances are experimentally and numerically investigated by model test and CFD technique. The effect of initial trim and a fin attached at hull side are studied together. Wave patterns are observed to make clear the relation between the performance and the wave characteristics. It can be found that the initial trim plays a role in increasing the resistance performance above a certain velocity, and the CFD technique can be used at the initial design stage of a high-speed planning boats.

  • A light-weight cantilever type towing carriage was devised and installed in the towing tank at Seoul National University. Wireless measurement devices were also provided for appropriate data acquisition during high-speed towing tests. With the new carriage system, a series of model tests were performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the racing boat in the towing tank and the resistance test results had sufficient accuracy so that they could be used in the development of a high speed planning hull.

  • In order to establish a design guide for the bottom plate structure of a 4.3 ton aluminum planning boat, the feasibilities of bottom plate scantling of the ship are investigated based on the results of structural strength analysis and a simple equation and evaluation system are developed for initial structural design purposes. This study consists of 5 steps: First, the background, necessity, and purpose of this study are explained briefly, Second, the principal dimensions of this ship, the position of the considered bottom plate members and material characteristics are introduced. Third, the equivalent design pressure concept is introduced and evaluated based on experience and experimental data. Fourth, the strength of bottom plate members are examined using elasto-plastic nonlinear structural analysis, and response levels and several boundary conditions are reviewed based on the analysis results. Finally, in order to suggest design guides in respect to the ship's structural design, a simple design equation and evaluation system for bottom plate members are suggested for boats in the 4.3 ton aluminumboat range through the introduction of safety factorsbased on the ultimate design pressure concept.
