Kim et al. suggested an experimental method to determine the Q parameter in situ from the out-of-plane displacement and the in-plane strains on the surface of side necking near the crack tip. In this paper, the procedure to evaluate the stress triaxiality near a crack tip such as the Q parameter is to be polished in the details for simplicity and accuracy. That is, Q and hydrostatic stress are determined only from the out-of-plane displacement, but not using in-plane strain, which is hard to measure. And also, the plastic modulus is determined by an alternative way. Through three-dimensional finite element analyses for a standard CT specimen with 20% side-grooves, the validities of the new procedures are examined in comparison to the old ones. The effect of location where the displacements are measured to determine the stress triaxiality is explored.

This paper compiles solutions of plastic $\eta$ factors and crack tip stress triaxialites for standard and nonstandard fracture toughness testing specimens, via detailed three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) analyses. Fracture toughness testing specimens include a middle cracked tension (M(T)) specimen, SE(B), single-edge cracked bar in tension (SE(T)) and C(T) specimen. The ligament-to-thickness ratio of the specimen is systematically varied. It is found that the use of the CMOD overall provides more robust experimental J estimation than that of the LLD, for all cases considered in the present work. Moreover, the J estimation based on the load-CMOD record is shown to be insensitive to the specimen thickness, and thus can be used for testing specimen with any thickness. The effects of in-plane and out-of-plane constraint on the crack tip stress triaxiality are also quantified, so that when experimental J value is estimated according to the procedure recommended in this paper, the corresponding crack tip stress triaxiality can be estimated. Moreover, it is found that the out-of-plane constraint effect is related to the in-plane constraint effect.

Three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip-leakage flow region of a turbine blade equipped with both a pressure-side winglet and a suction-side squealer have been measured for the tip gap-to-span ratio of h/s = 1.36%. The suction-side squealer has a fixed height-to-span ratio of $h_s/s$ = 3.75% and the pressure-side winglet has width-to-pitch ratios of w/p = 2.64%, 5.28%, 7.92% and 10.55%. The results are compared with those for a plane tip and for a cavity squealer tip of $h_{ps}/s$ = 3.75%. The present tip delivers lower loss in the passage vortex region but higher loss in the tip-leakage vortex region, compared to the plane tip. With increasing w/p, its mass-averaged loss tends to be reduced. Regardless of w/p, the present tip provides lower loss than the plane tip but higher loss than the cavity squealer tip.

The heat/mass transfer characteristics on the plane tip surface of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. At the Reynolds number of $2.09{\times}10^5$, heat/mass transfer coefficients are measured for the tip gap height-to-chord ratio, h/c, of 2.0% at turbulence levels of Tu = 0.3 and 14.7%. A tip-surface flow visualization is also performed for h/c = 2.0% at Tu = 0.3%. The results show that there exists a strong flow separation/re-attachment process, which results in severe local thermal load along the pressure-side corner, and a pair of vortices named "tip gap vortices" in this study is identified along the pressure and suction-side tip corners near the leading edge. The loci and subsequent development of the pressure- and suction-side tip gap vortices are discussed in detail. The combustor-level high inlet turbulence, which increases the tip-surface heat/mass transfer, provides more uniform thermal-load distribution.
For the purpose of clarifying the influence of welding residual stress to the fatigue crack propagations behaviour, an analytical investigation based on finite element method is performed to examine the opening behaviour of tip-closed crack in the compressive residual stress. A finite element model comprised of contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material is used to evaluate crack opening stress of the crack existing in the residual stress field. Also an analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate the length of opened part of tip closed crack and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack during uploading is applied to the finite element model. The software for the analysis is ABAQUS, which is a general purpose finite element package. The results show that stresses distributed on the crack surfaces are reduced and approached to zero as the applied stresses are increased up to crack tip opening stress and no mechanical discontinuity is found at the boundary of contact elements and plane stress elements. It is verified that the opening behavior of the fatigue crack in the residual stress can be predicted by finite element method with the proposed analytical method.
We review a series of crack problems arising in the general deformations of a linearly elastic solid (Mode-I, Mode-II and Mode-III crack) and, perhaps more significantly, when the contribution of surface effects are taken into account. The surface mechanics are incorporated using the continuum based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. We show that the deformations of an elastic solid containing a single crack can be decoupled into in-plane (Mode-I and Mode-II crack) and anti-plane (Mode-III crack) parts, even when the surface mechanics is introduced. In particular, it is shown that, in contrast to classical fracture mechanics (where surface effects are neglected), the incorporation of surface elasticity leads to the more accurate description of a finite stress at the crack tip. In addition, the corresponding stress fields exhibit strong dependency on the size of crack.

In this study, the conventional plane tip, double squealer tip, and various groove tip blades were tested in a linear cascade in order to measure the effect of the tip shapes on tip surface heat transfer coefficient distributions. Detailed heat transfer coefficient distributions were measured using a hue-detection based transient liquid crystals technique. Two tip gap clearances of 1.5% and 2.3% of blade span were investigated and the Reynolds number based on cascade exit velocity and chord length was $2.48{\times}10^5$. Results showed that the overall heat transfer coefficients on the tip surface with various grooved tips were lower than those with plane tip blade. The overall heat transfer coefficient on grooved along suction side tip was lower than that on the squealer tip.

The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory
