  • Recent controversies surrounding plagiarism of research papers submitted to domestic scholarly journals and dissertations lead to scrutiny in the level of scholarly community and that of government as well. Particularly the latter is beginning to deal with the problem as a matter of establishing academic and research ethics at international level. This study looks into the notions and definitions of citation and plagiarism4 along with some basic issues around them in academic and research writings. This study is done in the perspective of library and information science through literature survey. And the following three aspects are investigated and analysed in detail as results of this study. First. the types and related problems of plagiarism are closely examined. Second, citation styles in writing academic and research papers are compared and analysed. Finally, deterring and preventing measures against plagiarism and appropriate citation practices are suggested.

  • The similarity detecting method that is basically used in most plagiarism detecting systems is to use the frequency of shared words based on morphological analysis. However, this method has limitations on detecting accurate degree of similarity, especially when similar words concerning the same topics are used, sentences are partially separately excerpted, or postpositions and endings of words are similar. In order to overcome this problem, we have designed and implemented a plagiarism detecting system that provides more reliable similarity information by measuring sentence similarity and syntactic word similarity in addition to the conventional word similarity. We have carried out a comparison of on our system with a conventional system using only word similarity. The comparative experiment has shown that our system can detect plagiarized document that the conventional system can detect or cannot.

  • This study examines the effects of Korean college students' English proficiency and the English text types on their paraphrases. Korean college students with three groups of English proficiency (high, mid, and low) read two types of English texts, causal texts, and argumentative texts, and paraphrased them in English. Students' paraphrase text was evaluated in terms of content (idea exposition, idea development, and wrap up), organization (coherence and cohesion) and language use (grammatical accuracy), and analyzed by MANOVA. As a result, it was found that there was a significant difference in their paraphrase performance according to the participants' English proficiency levels rather than the types of English texts. The results of this study have educational implications for English paraphrase education to prevent plagiarism for Korean university students.

  • Design-Based Research (DBR) focuses on developing key principles of interventions to advance both theory and practicalities of dissemination (Brown, 1992), yet its methodological details have not been quite established. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to address the pragmatics of DBR by sharing the researcher's reflections on conducting a longitudinal DBR project for five years. In an attempt to advance college teaching practices as well as theories related to student plagiarism, the project focused on refining "humble" theories on how and why college students engage in plagiarism to design classroom interventions for promoting academic integrity. Similar to the Integrative Learning Design (ILD) framework proposed by Bannan-Ritland (2003), but conducted in a much simpler and less formal format, this study followed DBR cycles from initial conceptualization to design and enact instructional interventions in authentic contexts while collecting both quantitative and qualitative data from each phase. Finally, the paper addresses some challenges encountered throughout the DBR project as well as the lessons learned from this experience. Like many previous DBR studies whose practical relevance is limited to local context, the findings from this study may not be easily generalized for other contexts.

  • Purpose - To improve and strengthen existing publication and research ethics, KODISA has identified and presented various cases which have violated publication and research ethics and principles in recent years. The editorial office of KODISA has been providing and continues to provide advice and feedback on publication ethics to researchers during peer review and editorial decision making process. Providing advice and feedback on publication ethics will ensure researchers to have an opportunity to correct their mistakes or make appropriate decisions and avoid any violations in research ethics. The purpose of this paper is to identify different cases of ethical violation in research and inform and educate researchers to avoid any violations in publication and research ethics. Furthermore, this article will demonstrate how KODISA journals identify and penalize ethical violations and strengthens its publication ethics and practices. Research design, data and methodology - This paper examines different types of ethical violation in publication and research ethics. The paper identifies and analyzes all ethical violations in research and combines them into five general categories. Those five general types of ethical violations are thoroughly examined and discussed. Results - Ethical violations of research occur in various forms at regular intervals; in other words, unethical researchers tend to commit different types of ethical violations repeatedly at same time. The five categories of ethical violation in research are as follows: (1) Arbitrary changes or additions in author(s) happen frequently in thesis/dissertation related publications. (2) Self plagiarism, submitting same work or mixture of previous works with or without using proper citations, also occurs frequently, but the most common type of plagiarism is changing the statistical results and using them to present as the results of the empirical analysis; (3) Translation plagiarism, another ethical violation in publication, is difficult to detect but occurs frequently; (4) Fabrication of data or statistical analysis also occurs frequently. KODISA requires authors to submit the results of the empirical analysis of the paper (the output of the statistical program) to prevent this type of ethical violation; (5) Mashup or aggregator plagiarism, submitting a mix of several different works with or without proper citations without alterations, is very difficult to detect, and KODISA journals consider this type of plagiarism as the worst ethical violation. Conclusions - There are some individual cases of ethical violation in research and publication that could not be included in the five categories presented throughout the paper. KODISA and its editorial office should continue to develop, revise, and strengthen their publication ethics, to learn and share different ways to detect any ethical violations in research and publication, to train and educate its editorial members and researchers, and to analyze and share different cases of ethical violations with the scholarly community.

  • The development of computer-based information technology has led to the quantitative and qualitative growth of social media which have two sides; a positive one such as the generation and sharing of information and a negative one which includes cyber plagiarism and cyber bullying. This study seeks to understand which factors can lead to cyber plagiarism, which is the most prevalent form of unethical cyber behavior. We expected that the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for using social media would have different effects on unethical cyber intention and that this relation between motivation and cyber unethical behavior would be moderated by the subjective norm. In order to obtain a better understanding of the relationships among the individual motivation, unethical cyber intention, and cyber plagiarism, information was obtained from 564 social media users. The respondents provided details of their experiences and attitudes regarding social media usage behavior and unethical cyber behavior. The results confirmed that extrinsic motivation significantly increases unethical intention and further leads to high levels of cyber plagiarism. The subjective norm plays a moderating role in the relationships between extrinsic motivation and unethical cyber intention. Based on the results, the theoretical and practical implications of the research findings are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided.
