Room-temperature operating CdZnTe(CZT) material is an innovative radiation detector which could reduce the patient dose to one-tenth level of conventional CT (Computed Tomography) and mammography system. The pixel and pixel pitch in the imaging device determine the conversion efficiency of incident X-or gamma-ray and the cross-talk of signal, that is, image quality of detector system. The weighting potential is the virtual potential determined by the position and geometry of electrode. The weighting potential obtained by computer-based simulation in solving Poisson equation with proper boundaries condition. The pixel was optimized by considering the CIE (charge induced efficiency) and the signal cross-talk in CT detector system. The pixel pitch was 1-mm and the detector thickness was 2-mm in the simulation. The optimized pixel size and inter-pixel distance for maximizing the CIE and minimizing the signal cross-talk is about $750{\mu}m$ and $125{\mu}m$, respectively.

This paper presents a hardware edge detector of image signal at pixel level of CMOS image sensor (CIS). The circuit detects edges of an image based on a bump circuit combining with the pixels. The APS converts light into electrical signals and the bump circuit compares the brightness between the target pixel and its neighbor pixels. Each column on CIS 64 by 64 pixels array shares a comparator. The comparator decides a peak level of the target pixel comparing with a reference voltage. The proposed edge detector is implemented using 0.18um CMOS technology. The circuit shows higher fill factor 34% and power dissipation by 0.9uW per pixel at 1.8V supply.
The KOMPSAT-2 satellite is a push-broom system with MSC (Multi Spectral Camera) which contains a panchromatic band and four multi-spectral bands covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm. The PAN band is composed of six CCD array with 2528 pixels. And the MS band has one CCD array with 3792 pixels. Raw imagery generated from a push-broom sensor contains vertical streaks caused by variability in detector response, variability in lens falloff, pixel area, output amplifiers and especially electrical gain and offset. Relative radiometric calibration is necessary to account for the detector-to-detector non-uniformity in this raw imagery. Non-uniformity correction (NUC) is that the process of performing on-board relative correction of gain and offset for each pixel to improve data compressibility and to reduce banding and streaking from aggregation or re-sampling in the imagery. A relative gain and offset are calculated for each detector using scenes from uniform target area such as a large desert, forest, sea. In the NUC of KOMPSAT-2, The NUC table for each pixel are divided as HF NUC (high frequency NUC) and LF NUC (low frequency NUC) to apply to few restricted facts in the operating system ofKOMPSAT-2. This work presents the algorithm and process of NUC table generation and shows the imagery to compare with and without calibration.

Dynamic range on the digital detector can be a representation to the ratio of maximum and minimum of pixel value. Wide dynamic range and post processing ability of the digital detector made difficult to recognize visually to high or low dose images. We were evaluated a change of mean pixel value on the original and processed image, when we controlled the kVp, mA, exposure time on the digital detector. On the kVp of a constant condition, we were acquired an original and processed image by changes of mA, exposure time. According to the thickness of the subject under the same conditions, to determine a relation of pixel value and X-ray intensity, we used an aluminum step wedge. When mA and exposure times were changed under the kVp of a constant condition, the X-ray intensity was decreased by the reduction of the mean pixel value. In addition when kVp was increased in a constant condition of mAs, the mean pixel value was increased according to the increment of the X-ray intensity. Therefore, low kVp, high mA and short exposure time were a way to reduce a patient dose.
Computed tomography, which obtains section images from reconstruction process using projection images, has been applied to various fields. The spatial resolution of the reconstructed image depends on the device used in CT system, the object, and the reconstruction process. In this paper, we investigates the effect of the number of projection images and the pixel size of the detector on the spatial resolution of the reconstructed image under the parallel beam geometry. The reconstruction program was written in Visual C++, and the matrix size of the reconstructed image was $512{\times}512$. The numerical bar phantom was constructed and the Min-Max method was introduced to evaluate the spatial resolution on the reconstructed image. When the number of projections used in reconstruction process was small, artifact like streak appeared and Min-Max was also low. The Min-Max showed upper saturation when the number of projections is increased. If the pixel size of the detector is reduced to 50% of the pixel size of the reconstructed image, the reconstructed image was perfectly recovered as the original phantom and the Min-Max decreased as increasing the detector pixel size. This study will be useful in determining the detector and the accuracy of rotation stage needed to achieve the spatial resolution required in the CT system.
The detector of the positron emission tomography (PET) is composed using a plurality of scintillation pixels and photo sensors. The use of multiple photo sensors increases cost and complicates signal processing. In this study, a detector with reduced cost and simple signal processing was designed using a small number of photo sensors. A scintillation pixel and a small number of photo sensors were used, and a optical guide was used to deliver light to all the photo sensors. A reflector is applied to the scintillation pixel and the optical guide to transmit the maximum amount of light to the photo sensor. A diffuse reflector and a specular reflector were used for the reflector, and a flood image was obtained by applying different thicknesses of the optical guide. An optimal combination was selected through comparative analysis of the acquired flood images. As a result, when specular reflectors were used for both the scintillation pixel and the optical guide, excellent flood images were obtained from optical guides of all thicknesses. For the optical guide, the optimal image was obtained when using a 3 mm thickness in consideration of the size of the image and the analysis of the point where the image of the scintillation pixel was formed.

Large area matrix-addressed image detectors are a recent technology for x-ray imaging with medical diagnostic and other applications. The imaging properties of x-ray pixel detectors depend on the quantum efficiency of x-rays, the generated signal of each x-ray photon and the distribution of the generated signal between pixels. In a phosphor coated detector the light signal is generated by electrons captured in the phosphor screen. In our study we simulated the lateral spread distributions for phosphor coupled detector by Monte Carlo simulations. Most simulations of such detectors simplify the setup by only taking the conversion layer into account neglecting behind. The Monte Carlo code MCNPX has been used to simulate the complete interaction and subsequent charge transport of x-ray radiation. This has allowed the analysis of charge sharing between pixel elements as an important limited factor of digital x-ray imaging system. The parameters are determined by lateral distribution of x-ray photons and x-ray induced electrons. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a design tool for the evaluation of geometry factor in the phosphor coupled optical imaging detector. In order to evaluate the spatial resolution for different phosphor material, phosphor geometry we have developed a simulation code. The developed code calculates the energy absorption and spatial distribution based on both the signal from the scintillating layer and the signal from direct detection of x-ray in the detector. We show that internal scattering contributes to the so-called spatial resolution drop of the image detector. Results from the simulation of spatial distribution in a phosphor pixel detector are presented. The spatial resolution can be increased by optimizing pixel size and phosphor thickness.
The paper identifies noise characteristics of a nonliner image sensor model which reflects a saturation effect of each detector pixel and extends the result to estimate an image SNR (Signla-to-Noise Ratio) distribution over all the pixels in a detector. In particular, nonlinearity of a pixel is studied from two perspectives of including asymmetry of a noise PDF (Probability Distribution Function) and enhancing a pixel SNR value, in comparison to a linear model. It is noted that the proposed image SNR distribution function is useful to effectively select new optimal operation parameter values: an integration time and an pixel-summing number, even after a launch campaign, assuming sensor gain degradation in orbit or inevitable modification of some operation parameter values due to space contingency.
