Despite the continuous development of phenology detection studies using satellite imagery, verification through comparison with the field observed data is insufficient. Especially, in the case of Korean forests patching in various forms, it is difficult to estimate the start of season (SOS) by using only satellite images due to resolution difference. To improve the accuracy of vegetation phenology estimation, this study reconstructed the large scaled forest type map (1:5,000) with MODIS pixel resolution and produced time series vegetation phenology curves from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) derived from MODIS images. Based on the field observed data, extraction methods for the vegetation indices and SOS for Korean forests were compared and evaluated. We also analyzed the correlation between the composition ratio of forest types in each pixel and phenology extraction from the vegetation indices. When we compared NDVI and EVI with the field observed SOS data from the Korea National Arboretum, EVI was more accurate for Korean forests, and the first derivative was most suitable for extracting SOS in the phenology curve from the vegetation index. When the eight pixels neighboring the pixels of 7 broadleaved trees with field SOS data (center pixel) were compared to field SOS, the forest types of the best pixels with the highest correlation with the field data were deciduous forest by 67.9%, coniferous forest by 14.3%, and mixed forest by 7.7%, and the mean coefficient of determination ($R^2$) was 0.64. The average national SOS extracted from MODIS EVI were DOY 112.9 in 2014 at the earliest and DOY 129.1 in 2010 at the latest, which is about 0.16 days faster since 2003. In future research, it is necessary to expand the analysis of deciduous and mixed forests' SOS into the extraction of coniferous forest's SOS in order to understand the various climate and geomorphic factors. As such, comprehensive study should be carried out considering the diversity of forest ecosystems in Korea.

The net biomass accumulation (or net primary production, NPP) and gross primary production (GPP) have closely related with carbon accumulations(or carbon exchange) in vegetation. There are many approaches to estimate biomass using remote sensing techniques. The vegetation indices (VIs) can be a methodology to estimate biomass which assumes total chlorophyll contents. Various VIs were characterized with difference development conditions as vegetation species, input datasets. The hyperspectral data have also different spatial/spectral resolutions for aerial surveying. Additionally they need particular spectral bands selection difficulty to calculate the VIs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlations with airborne hyperspectral data (compact airborne spectrographic imager, CASI) and spectral unmixing model (or spectral mixture analysis, SMA) to characterize vegetation indices in forest area. The spectral mixture analysis was used to model the spectral purity of each pixel as an endmember. The endmembers are the fraction components derived from hyperspectral data through the SMA. In this study, we choose three endmembers represented vegetation pixels in the hyperspectral data. These endmembers were compared with 9 VIs by the Pearson's correlation coefficient. The results show MTVI1 and TVI have same correlation coefficient with 0.877. The MCARI, especially has very high relationship with vegetation endmembers as 0.9061 at less vegetation and soil distributed site. The MTVI1 and TVI have high correlations with the vegetation endmembers as 0.757 in whole test sites.

This paper proposes a neural network based approach for automatic human emotion recognition in textile images. To investigate the correlation between the emotion and the pattern, the survey is conducted on 20 peoples, which shows that a emotion is deeply affected by a pattern. Accordingly, a neural network based classifier is used for recognizing the pattern included in textiles. In our system, two schemes are used for describing the pattern; raw-pixel data extraction scheme using auto-regressive method (RDES) and wavelet transformed data extraction scheme (WTDES). To assess the validity of the proposed method, it was applied to recognize the human emotions in 100 textiles, and the results shows that using WTDES guarantees better performance than using RDES. The former produced the accuracy of 71%, while the latter produced the accuracy of 90%. Although there are some differences according to the data extraction scheme, the proposed method shows the accuracy of 80% on average. This result confirmed that our system has the potential to be applied for various application such as textile industry and e-business.

Objectives: Curettage and enucleation are two of the most common procedures performed in oral and maxillofacial surgery units. To access a cystic lesion, the buccal cortical plate is removed. The no reposition (NR) group underwent surgery without repositioning the buccal cortical plate. The reposition (R) group underwent surgery with a repositioning of the buccal cortical plate. This study compared the two surgical procedures in terms of bone healing and complications. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent curettage and enucleation surgery were enrolled in this study. Panoramic radiographs of the patients in both the NR group (n=26) and R group (n=34) were taken at the baseline and at 6, 12 and 24 months after surgery. The radiolucent area was calculated to evaluate bony healing in each radiograph. The complications were analyzed through a review of the medical records. Results: The correlation between bony healing and surgical approach was not significant in the 6th, 12th, and 24th month (P<0.05). The complication rate was not associated with gender, graft material, bone graft and drain insertion (P<0.05). On the other hand, the R group had a higher complication rate (35.3%) than the NR group (0%). The difference in the mean lesion size between the NR group ($37,024{\pm}3,617$ pixel) and R group ($92,863{\pm}15,931$ pixel) was significant (independent t test, P=0.004). Conclusion: Although the reposition method is chosen when the lesion size is large, it is associated with more complications. Indeed, infection, discomfort and recurrence of the lesion were the most common complications in the R group. Furthermore, the R method does not have a strong point in terms of bone healing compared to the NR method. Therefore, the R method cannot be considered an ideal approach and should be used in limited cases.
Digital halftoning is the technique to obtain a bilevel-toned image from continuous-toned image. Among halftoning methods, the error diffusion method gives better subjective quality than other halftoning ones. But it also makes edges of objects blurred. To overcome the defect, we proposes the modified error diffusion to enhance the edges using the property that human vision perceives the local average luminance and doesn't perceive a little variation of the spatial variation. The proposed method computes a spatialactivity, which is the difference between a pixel luminance and the average of its $3{\times}3$ neighborhood pixels' Iuminance weighted according to the spatial positioning. The system also usesof edge enhancement (IEE), which is computed from the normalized spatial activitymultiplied by the average luminance. The IEE is added to the quantizer's input pixel and feeds into the halftoning quantizer. The quantizer produces the halftone image having the enhanced edge. The computer experimental results show that the proposed method produces clearer bilevel-toned images than conventional methodsand the edge of objects is preserved well. Also the performance of the preposed method is improved, compared with that of the conventional method by measuring the edge correlation and the local average accordance at some ranges of viewing distance.
Accurate correction of surface effect from back scattered solar radiance is one of key issue to retrieve aerosol information from satellite measurements. In this study, two different methods are applied to retrieve surface reflectance by using single visible channel measurement from meteorological imager onboard COMS. The first one is minimum reflectance method, which composes the minimum value among previously measured reflectances at each pixel over a certain search window length. This method assumes that the darkest pixel corresponds to the aerosol-free condition, and deduces surface reflectance by correcting atmospheric scattering from the measured visible reflectance. The second method, named as the "atmospheric correction method" in this study, estimates the result by correcting aerosol and atmospheric scattering with ground-based observation of aerosol optical properties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the retrieval accuracy of the widelyused minimum reflectance method. Also, the retrieval error caused by the loading of background aerosol is mainly estimated. The comparison between surface reflectances retrieved from the two methods shows good agreement with the correlation coefficient of 0.87. However, the results from the minimum reflectance method are slightly overestimated than the values from the atmospheric correction method when surface reflectance is lower than 0.2. The average difference between the two results is 0.012 without the background aerosol correction. By considering the background aerosol effect, however, the difference is reduced to 0.010.
For an effective phase multiplexing in a volume holographic system, four types of phase code, pseudo random code(PSC), Hadamard matrix(HAM), pure random code(PRC), equivalent random code(ERC), used as reference beams are generated. In case of $32{\times}32$ address beam, a phase error with 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% error rate, is purposely added to the real phase values in order to consider the practical SLM's nonlinear characteristics of phase modulation in computer simulation. Crosstalks and SNRs(signal-to-ratio) are comparatively analyzed for these phase codes by the auto-correlation and cross-correlation. PSC has the lowest cross-correlation mean value of 0.067 among four types of phase code, which means the SNR of the pseudo random phase code is higher than other phase codes. Also, the standard deviation of the pseudo random phase code indicating the degree of recalled data degradation is the lowest value of 0.0113. In order to analyze the affect by variation of pixel size, simulation is carried out by same method for the case of $32{\times}32$, $64{\times}64$, $128{\times}128$, $256{\times}256$ address beams.
Removal of subgingival calculus is essential for the success in periodontal treatment. Subgingival instrumentation is used for the removal of all bacterial plaque and calculus. In this study, Gracey curet and Ultrasonic curet were used on single rooted teeth to conduct subgingval scaling and root planning. The remaining amount of calculus was evaluated according to type of instrument, depth of pocket, and tooth surface. 24 teeth were extracted from 14 patients being treated at department Periodontology Seoul Advantist dental hospital were used. Total 96 area(4 surface per teeth) were evaluated. 12 teeth treated with Gracey curet were used as the control group and the other 12 teeth treated with Ultrasonic curet were examined for experimental group. The 4 surface of the teeth(buccal, mesial, lingual or palatal, distal) were observed through the stereomicroscope and the images of the surface were captured and saved in CCD. The images were displayed on the monitor and the amount of calculus remained was evaluated by overlapping $10{\times}10$ grid pixel screen produced by Microsoft power point. The results evaluated were as follows 1. There was no statistically significant difference in residual calculus and tooth position following scaling and root planning of all group, but statistically significant correlation with residual calculus, probing depth, instruments and tooth surface. 2. There was statistically significant correlation between residual calculus and probing depth, but no statistically significant difference in residual calculus, tooth surface and tooth position on experimental(Ultrasonic curet) group. 3. There was no statistically significant difference in residual calculus according to the pre-treatment pocket depth and tooth position, but statistically significant correlation with tooth surface. The amount of residual calculus increase with mesial, distal, buccal and lingual(or palatal) surface on control(Gracey curet) group. 4. The Gracey showed better results than ultrasonic curet in mesial and distal surface, and there is significant difference. The results demonstrate that ultrasonic curet alone is inadequate for thorough subgingival debridement and suggest that Ultrasonic curet with Gracey curet should be more effective.

In this paper, performance of the CPC(complex phase code) which is recently proposed as a practical phase encoding method for phase-code multiplexes holographic memory system is comparatively analyzed with those of the conventional phase codes such as PR(pure random code), RCE(random code with equality), WHM(Walsh Hadamard Matrix). In computer simulation, the size of an address bean is fixed at 32$\times$32 pixels and 0%-25% phase-error ratio in a pixel are intentionally added to the real phase values to consider the nonlinear phase-modulation characteristics of the practical spatial light modulator. From comparative analysis of crosstalks and signal-to-noise ratios for these phase codes by calculating auto-correlation and cross-correlation, it is found that the CPC have the lowest cross-correlation mean value of 0.021, the lowest standard deviation of 0.0113 and the highest signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) of 27.4 among the four types of phase code. In addition, from the calculation of the number of all possible address beams for these four types of phase code as the size of the address beam is fixed to 3232 pixels, the CPC is found to have 6.334$\times$10$^{49}$ address beams, which are relatively higher number than that of the conventional phase codes.

Purpose : To evaluate the relationship between morphometric analysis of bone microstructure from digital radiographic image and trabecular bone strength. Materials and Methods : One hundred eleven bone specimens with 5 mm thickness were obtained from the mandibles of 5 pigs. Digital images of specimens were taken using a direct digital intraoral radiographic system. After selection of ROI (100 × 100 pixel) within the trabecular bone, mean gray level and standard deviation were obtained. Fractal dimension and the variants of morphometric analysis (trabecular area, periphery, length of skeletonized trabeculae, number of terminal point, number of branch point) were obtained from ROI. Punch sheer strength analysis was performed using Instron (model 4465, Instron Corp., USA). The loading force (loading speed 1 mm/min) was applied to ROI of bone specimen by a 2 mm diameter punch. Stress-deformation curve was obtained from the punch sheer strength analysis and maximum stress, yield stress, Young's modulus were measured. Results: Maximum stress had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level and fractal dimension significantly (p<0.05). Yield stress had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level, periphery, fractal dimension and the length of skeletonized trabeculae significantly (p < 0.05). Young's modulus had a negative linear correlation with mean gray level and fractal dimension significantly (p < 0.05). Conclusions : The strength of cancellous bone exhibited a significantly linear relationship between mean gray level, fractal dimension and morphometric analysis. The methods described above can be easily used to evaluate bone quality clinically.
