In this paper, we made CGH patterns that had continuous amplitude distribution binary coded patterns with two different methods, and analyzed those patterns by using LCSLM (liquid crystal spatial light modulator). The error diffusion algorithm and direct quantization method were used as the binarization methods. The parameters of overall average brightness, mean square error, and diffraction efficiency were used in the comparison of reconstruction characteristics. The LCSLM which we used in this experiment was a binary reflective ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulator addressed electrically with 256$\times$256 pixels, 87% fill factor and 15$\mu$m pixel pitch.

In this study, a topography based hydrologic model (TOPMODEL) was tested on the Anseong-cheon watershed. Pit in watershed was removed by liner trend surface interpolator. The DTM Analysis program is used to derived a distribution of ln($a/tan{\beta}$) values from DEM (Digital Elevation Model) using the MDF (Multiple Direction Flow) algorithm of Quinn et al (1995). Current TOPMODEL program limits are number of time step, ln($a/tan{\beta}$) increment, delay histogram ordinate and size of subcatchment pixel maps. Therefore, TOPMODEL is not suitable for application of large watershed. Muskingum method and watershed division enhance grid pixel resolution for rainfall-runoff simulation accuracy.
Laser speckle patterns were used to monitor variations of thermal voltages of a cathode during a battery discharge. Discharge voltages measured with an oscilloscope were utilized as a figure of merit of thermal voltages in Zn metal. Using an optical imaging system, speckle patterns were taken for zinc metal surface over a time period of 3 minutes. Pixel sum distribution functions (PSDFs) were extracted from speckle patterns. Accumulated pixel sums quantified from PSDFs over an optimized grayscale range strongly correlated with discharge voltages. This suggested that dark matter or particles may have the capability of both absorbing and radiating thermal energies simultaneously. The black body-like properties were able to be validated by identifying coincidences with distinct features of a black body spectrum. The pixels belonging to the grayscale range were confirmed to represent dark matter of a speckle pattern. It was clear that dark matter was part of surface plasmon carriers. The proposed sensing system can be applied to monitor thermal energy variations in any material.

In this paper, we propose a multiresolution edge detection method which selects the edge detection window size and scale automatically by using the local variance information as an edgeness measure of a region. The mode of the local variance distribution which is calculated over the (2p + 1) x (2p + 1) windows is used to determine the resolution of the given pixel and the edge operator with different scale can be applied to the pixel depending on its resolution. The combination of the resolution determination scheme with the conventional Canny and LOG edge detectors gives the proposed multiresolution edge detection schemes. The effectness of the proposed schemes is shown via computer simulation.

Edge detection is a technique that obtains the particular information of the image using the brightness variation of pixel values and utilized for preprocessing in various image processing sectors. The conventional edge detection methods such as Sobel, Prewitt and Roberts are processed by applying the same weighted value to the entire pixels regardless of pixel distribution and provides somewhat insufficient edge detection results. Therefore, this paper has proposed an edge detection algorithm considering the direction and size of pixels by applying a modified directional mask.
The worldwide spread of the Internet and the digital information revolution have resulted in a rapid increase in the use and transmission of multimedia information due to the rapid development of communication technologies. It is important to protect images in order to prevent problems such as piracy and illegal distribution. To solve this problem, I propose a new digital color image encryption algorithm in this paper. I design a new pseudo-random number generator based on 1D five-neighborhood maximum length cellular automata (FN-MLCA) to change the pixel values of the plain image into unpredictable values. And then I use a 3D chaotic cat map to effectively shuffle the positions of the image pixel. In this paper, I propose a method to construct a new MLCA by modeling 1D FN-MLCA. This result is an extension of 1D 3-neighborhood CA and shows that more 1D MLCAs can be synthesized. The safety of the proposed algorithm is verified through various statistical analyses.

This paper presents an automatic inspection of defects in semiconductor images. We devise a statistical method to find defects on homogeneous background from the observation that it has a log-normal distribution. If computer aided design (CAD) data is available, we use it to construct a signed distance function (SDF) and change the pixel values so that the average of pixel values along the level curve of the SDF is zero, so that the image has a homogeneous background. In the absence of CAD data, we devise a hybrid method consisting of a model-based algorithm and two neural networks. The model-based algorithm uses the first right singular vector to determine whether the image has a linear or complex structure. For an image with a linear structure, we remove the structure using the rank 1 approximation so that it has a homogeneous background. An image with a complex structure is inspected by two neural networks. We provide results of numerical experiments for the proposed methods.

When Flat Panel Display (FPD) is made with backlight module, such as LED TV, it inherently suffers from the non-uniform backlight luminance problem that results in un-even brightness distribution throughout the TV screen. If the luminance of each pixel location of a TV screen as a function of the driving voltage can be measured, it can be used to compensate the non-uniformity of the backlight module. We use a carefully calibrated imaging system to take pictures of a TV screen at different levels of brightness and generate the compensation functions for the driving circuitry to correct the luminance level at each pixel location. Making use of the fact that the luminance of the screen is normally brightest at around the center of the screen and gradually decreases toward the border of the screen, the luminance of the whole TV screen is approximated by a mathematical function of the pixel locations. The parameters of the function are computed in the least square sense by the values of both the pixel luminance sent from the driving circuit and the grayscale value measured from the image taken by the imaging system. To justify the correction system, a simple second order polynomial function is used to approximate the luminance across the screen. When the driving circuit voltage is corrected according to the measured function, the variance of the screen luminance is reduced to one tenth of the one measured from the un-corrected TV screen.
To use domestic softwood for structural lumber, appropriate grading system for quality, production and distribution condition of domestic lumber should be prepared. Kim et al. developed an automatic image processing system for grading domestic structural lumber (2009a and b). This study was carried out to investigate optimal image merging conditions for improving performance of image input system which is the key technique of image processing system, developed in the previous paper. To merge digital images of Korean larch lumber, choosing the green channel information of obtained image data showed the most accurate merging performance. As a pre-treatment process, applying Y-derivative Sharr's kernel filter could improve the image merging accuracy, but the effect of camera calibration was imperceptible. The optimal size of template image was verified as 30 pixel widths and 150 pixel heights. When applying the above mentioned conditions, the error length of images was 3.1 mm and the processing time was 9.7 seconds in average.

Dislocation density and distribution in epitaxial GaAs layer on Si are evaluated quantitatively and effectively using image processing of transmission electron microscopy image. In order to evaluate dislocation density and distribution, three methods are introduced based on line-intercept, line-length measurement and our coding with line-scanning method. Our coding method based on line-scanning is used to detect the dislocations line-by-line effectively by sweeping a thin line with the width of one pixel. The proposed method has advances in the evaluation of dislocation density and distribution. Dislocations can be detected automatically and continuously by a sweeping line in the code. Variation of dislocation density in epitaxial GaAs films can be precisely analyzed along the growth direction on the film.
