Objectives Hospitalized patients are vulnerable to sleep disturbances because of environmental stresses including noise. While most previous studies on hospital noise and sleep have been performed for medical machines in intensive care units, there is a limited data for patients hospitalized in medical wardrooms. The purpose of present study was to measure noise level of medical wardrooms, identify patient-perceived sources of noise, and to examine the association between noise levels and sleep disturbances in hospitalized patients. Methods Noise dosimeters were used to measure noise level in 29 inpatient wardrooms at a university hospital. Sleep pattern and disturbance were assessed in 103 hospitalized patients, using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Leeds Sleep Evaluation Questionnaire. Results The mean equivalent continuous noise level for 24 hours was 63.5 decibel A (dBA), which was far higher than 30 dBA recommended by the World Health Organization for hospital wardrooms. Other patients sharing a room were perceived as the most common source of noise by the patients, which was usually preventable. Of the patients in the study, 86% had bad sleep as assessed by the PSQI. The sleep disturbance was significantly correlated with increasing noise levels in a dose response manner. Conclusions Systemic organizational interventions are needed to keep wardrooms private and quiet to reduce sleep disturbance.
This study investigated the effects of Lavandula angustifolia (L. angustifolia) aroma on the brain electrical activity evaluated by an electroencephalogram (EEG) in the male adults since many researches were performed with females and few with males. Sleep quality of 35 male adults were analyzed by Pittsburgh sleep quality index, and they were divided into two groups of good sleep quality and poor sleep quality. EEG electrodes were attached at the frontal (F3, F4), temporal (T3, T4), occipital (O1, O2), and parietal (P3, P4) regions according to the International 10-20 system. EEG was measured for 3 min per each period of before, during, and after L. angustifolia aromatherapy. Subjects with good sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres and in the theta power at the temporal region of right hemisphere (p<0.05), and a decrease in the alpha at the parietal region of both cerebral hemispheres (p<0.05). And subjects with poor sleep quality showed increases in the delta power at the frontal region of left cerebral hemisphere and in the theta power at the frontal region of both hemispheres (p<0.05). It is concluded that L. angustifolia aroma has effects on decreasing an awakening status related-brain wave and increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with good sleep quality, and has also effects on increasing the sleep status related-brain waves in the male adults with poor sleep quality.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare depression, somatoform disorders, and quality of life among older adults. Methods: Samples of 280 community-dwelling Korean older adults were included. The age range of the participants was 60 to 90 years (average $72.6{\pm}6.4$). The participants were assigned to one of two groups based on reported scores on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index from September 2006 to March 2007. The two groups were designated as "poor sleepers"and "good sleepers". A T-test was used to compare depression, somatoform disorders and quality of life between the two groups. Results: Forty-six percent of participants reported scores that indicated they were poor sleepers. Poor sleepers reported significantly higher depression scores (p<.001), higher somatoform disorders scores (p<.001), lower for each SF-36 quality of life dimension, and lower mental and physical health summary scores (p<.001) than the reported scores of those participants who were classified as good sleepers. Conclusion: Older adults with poor sleep patterns are more likely to report higher depression, more somatoform disorders and a lower quality of life. Additional research is needed to identify the appropriate nursing interventions aimed at improving sleep quality, depression symptoms, somatoform disorders and the quality of life.
Objectives: We aimed to compare the quality of sleep, tongue diagnosis, oral microbiology differences in insomnia of Liver qi stagnation (LQS) and Non-Liver qi stagnation (NLQS). Methods: 56 patients were classified as LQS or NLSQ type insomnia through the insomnia differentiation questionnaire. The depression scores between the groups were compared through beck depression inventory (BDI), and the sleep quality was compared through Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). We analyzed the sleep efficiency, total sleep time, total awake frequency, total and average awake time through actigraph. For the tongue diagnosis, the distribution of tongue coating in six areas were measured through Winkel tongue coating index (WTCI). Linear discriminant analysis was performed to observe the differences in composition of microbial strains between the groups. Results: The scores of BDI, ISI and PSQI were significantly higher in LQS group. The total sleep time in LQS group was significantly less than that of NLQS group. Among the areas of tongue, according to the WTCI, the amount of tongue coating in zones A and C was significantly small. In oral microbial analysis, there was no significant difference between the groups at the phylum level. At the genus level, Prevotella, Veillonella, and Streptococcus were predominant in LQS group, whereas Prevotella, Neisseria, and Streptococcus in NLQS group. Conclusions: It was meaningful that insomnia was more likely in LQS group than in NLQS group, and the composition of oral microorganisms was significantly different, which could lead to the diseases caused by stress.

Purpose : This study was to compare and analyze major factors related to smartphone addiction according to the gender of health-related college students. Methods : 720 people who voluntarily participated and agreed to fill out the questionnaire were randomly sampled. Smartphone addiction was measured using the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV), sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), anxiety symptoms were measured using the self-assessment anxiety scale (SAS), and depression symptoms were measured using the self-assessment depression scale (SDS). In addition, the age of each individual and the main function of smartphone use were also investigated. Results : The prevalence of smartphone addiction was higher among female students than male students (p<.05), while male students mainly played games and female students mainly used multimedia (video/music) viewing and social networking services (p<.05). In addition, male students showed a high association with smartphone addiction in the group where games were the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with anxiety symptoms (p<.05), but for female students, multimedia (video/music) Or, the group in which social networking service is the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with symptoms of anxiety and depression showed a high correlation with smartphone addiction (p<.05). Conclusion : It is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for providing customized solutions considering the characteristics of smartphone addicts.
BACKGROUD/OBJECTIVES: Data regarding the effects of poly-γ-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) on sleep status are limited. This study aimed to test whether γ-PGA and vitamin B6 (VitB6) supplements improve sleep duration and quality. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A factorial randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled crossover study included 47 adults (25 men and 22 women) who were free of chronic disease. Stratified randomized allocation considered age and gender for three interventions, group A (supplementation with γ-PGA 600 mg; n = 16), group B (supplementation with VitB6 100 mg; n = 14), and group C (dual supplementation of both γ-PGA 600 mg and VitB6 100 mg; n = 17). Participants underwent a 1-mon intervention period, followed by a 1-mon washout period, and then a second 1-mon intervention period. Differences (mean ± SD) in nighttime sleep status before and after supplementation were compared between the placebo and intervention groups using nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Significant changes in sleep duration (0.27 ± 0.98 h, P < 0.05) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index global score (-0.52 ± 1.58, P < 0.05) indicating improved sleep status were observed in the intervention compared with the placebo of group C while no significant changes were observed in groups A and B. No statistical significance was detected between the intervention and the placebo; however, there was a greater increase in the group C intervention (4.59 ± 38.5 ng/mL) in serum serotonin concentrations than the groups A and B interventions. No side effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of these findings, the dual supplementation of γ-PGA and VitB6 may be effective as functional food components to improve nighttime sleep status.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of auricular acupressure on insomnia. Methods: Forty-four adults with insomnia for >1 month were recruited and randomly assigned to either the experimental or control group. In the experimental group, acupressure stickers were attached to the areas of Pineal Gland (TG1), Aggressivity point (LO2), Point Zero (HX1), and Occiput (AT3) for 1 week. Sleep hygiene education materials were provided to the control group, but acupressure was not provided. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS ver. 26 program. Results: As a result of controlling for the severity of insomnia (F=5.40, p=.025) and headache (F=4.60, p=.038), which showed a significant difference in the homogeneity test as covariates, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score in the experimental group decreased compared to that in the control group . Conclusion: The result of this study showed that auricular acupressure was helpful in improving insomnia.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the spread of a new type of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) on the mental state in school-age children and parents focusing on the aspects of sleep disorders and depression. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 123 parents and 108 school-age children who visited Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong from April 2, 2020 through April 25, 2020, via the direct writing method. Participants were assessed with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)-7, Center for Epidemiology Scale for Depression. Logistic regressions were used with a level of significance of 5%. The prevalence of GAD, depression, and poor sleep in parents were 34.1%, 17.1% and 44.7%, respectively. The prevalence of GAD in children was 20.4%. Logistic regression showed that stress from Emergency Alert Messages about COVID-19 was associated with GAD and depression in parents. In children, the degree of emotional change after COVID-19 was associated with GAD. This study confirmed that there was a change in the psychological status of children and guardians due to the epidemic of coronavirus disease-2019, and it would be necessary to consider their psychological status during dental treatment.

Introduction: Although it is well known that medical students are not getting an adequate amount of sleep, there have been only a few studies on the sleep patterns of medical students and the related factors. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the medical students' sleep patterns and the related factors. Methods: A questionnaire package was administered to the $1^{st}$ to $4^{th}$ year medical students at one medical school. It consisted of questions asking about their lifestyles as well as Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), global assessment of recent stress scale (GASS), the center for epidemiologic studies-depression scale (CES-D), and Moudsley obsessive-compulsive inventory (MOCI). A total of 352 students (206 males and 146 females) responded to the survey and the result was analyzed using the independent t-test, the chi-square test, the paired t-test, Pearson's correlation and ANOVA. p-values of less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant in analyses. Results: The weekend bedtime was significantly delayed (0 : 49 on weekday ; 1 : 34 on weekend ; t=-5.23, p<0.001), the weekend rise time was delayed (6 : 58 on weekday ; 9 : 30 on weekend ; t=-24.48, p<0.001) and the total sleep time was increased on weekends (5 : 36 on weekday ; 7 : 39 on weekend ; t=15.94, p<0.001). The PSQI score of all subjects was 6.43{\pm}2.64. PSQI was positively correlated with ESS (r=0.383, p<0.001), GASS (r=0.326, p<0.001), CES-D (r=0.393, p< 0.001), and MOCI (r=0.247, p<0.001), but not with GPA (r=0.072, p=0.228. The more senior students had lower PSQI, GASS, CES-D, and MOCI score (p<0.05). Conclusion: Medical students were experiencing a lack of sleep during weekdays as they have a later bedtime and earlier rise time, and consequently had more hours of sleep on weekends. Overall, the medical students were experiencing poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation. Poor sleep quality is associated with psychological problems (daytime sleepiness, stress, depression, and obsessive tendency).
This study evaluated the effects of latex mattresses on sleep quality and comfort. The participants were 11 healthy adults (five males, six females, mean age 37.7 years, mean height 167.8 cm, and mean weight 67.0 kg) without severe insomnia or other disease that could affect sleep, examined by a clinician. In their personal living space, participants slept on a spring mattress for 7 days, with their sleep registered using a wearable device (Fitbit), a sleep log, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and a satisfaction survey. The mattresses were then replaced with latex mattresses, which were used for 14 days. As a result, sleep time increased by 62.9 min on weekdays and 53.2 min on weekends after using the latex mattress, and a significant decrease, of 3.8, as seen on the ISI. As measured by the PSQI, the poor sleepers decreased from 10 to 7, but this was not statistically significant, and in the satisfaction survey, the comfort of the low back, neck, and shoulders was significantly increased. This suggests that changes to latex mattresses may positively affect objective and subjective sleep quality.
