  • In this study, the combined effect of chloride and thiosulfate ions and the effect of the ratio of the two ions on passivation in 304L, 316L, and the duplex stainless steels 2101 and 2205 are investigated using potentiostatic scratch tests. Cyclic polarization and the scratch tests were used to understand the role of anions on localized corrosion in these systems. It was found that the thiosulfate pitting began at a lower potential for 2101 than 304L in 0.6 M NaCl + 0.03 M $Na_2S_2O_3$ solution. The pit morphologies for 304L, 316L, and 2101 in an 0.6 M NaCl + 0.03 M $Na_2S_2O_3$ solution were very different from each other. The results indicate that the pitting switches from predominately thiosulfate pitting to chloride pitting at approximately 0.1 V.

  • Influence of electrochemical etching conditions on capacitance gain of aluminium electrolytic on capacitor foil has been investigated by etching cubic textured high purity aluminum foil in dilute hydrochloric acid. Uniformly distributed etch pit tunnels on aluminum surface have been obtained by pretreatment aluminium foil in 10% NaOH solution for 5 minutes followed by electrochemical etching. Electrostatic capacitance of etched aluminium foil anodized to high voltage increased with the increase of current density, total charge, temperature and concentration of electrolyte up to maximum CV-value and then deceased. Election optical observation of the etched foil revealed that the density of etch of etch pits increased with the increase of current density and concentration of electrolyte. this increase of etch pit density enlarged of the increase of capacitance. However, abnormal high current density and high electrolyte concentration induced the local dissolution of the foil surface which resulted the decrease of foil capacitance.

  • The calculation of earthwork plays a major role in the planning and design phases of many civil engineering projects, such as seashore reclamation; thus, improving the accuracy of earthwork calculation has become very important. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for finding a cubic spline surface with the free boundary conditions, which interpolates the given three-dimensional data, by using B-spline and an accurate method to estimate pit-excavation volume. The proposed method should be of interest to surveyors, especially those concerned with accuracy of volume computations. The mathematical models of the conventional methods have a common drawback: the modeling curves form peak points at the joints. To avoid this drawback, the cubic spline polynomial is chosen as the mathematical model of the new method. In this paper, we propose an algorithm of finding a spline surface, which interpolates the given data, and an appropriate method to calculate the earthwork. We present some computational results that show the proposed method, of the Maple program, provides better accuracy than the method presented by Chen and Lin.

  • Discussions on this paper are related to the effects of organic materials to treeing phenomena of low density polyethylene. As additives, 11 kinds of organic compounds are selected by considering the respective features such as melting point, boiling point, electron affinity as well as molecular structure, and then the specimens of low density polyethylene are prepared by blending with 10wt% of the selected additives. For the comparison of effectiveness of treeing resistance and interpretation of the mechanism of compounds as treeing retardants, several investigations such as the tree acceleration test, the prestressed test and the measurement of internally occurred partial discharge are carried out. As the results, meta-Cresol is regard as the most effective retardant among those, and it is supposed that this aromatic compound to be comprised of radical having large electron affinity has strong capability to accept energetic electron to prevent or delay the growth of discharge streamer. Furthermore, by activating partial discharge at the wall of tree pit through the function of trapped electron at this material, the gas pressure in the pit is increased up to prevent the growth of streamer.

  • The mechanism of the blowhole and the pit formation in lap-jointed fillet CO₂ arc welds of Zn-coated steel sheet was established by the direct observation of the gas behavior in the molten pool with the high speed camera system. Main conclusions obtained are as follows1) Some blowholes were formed by incomplete back-filling to the pits at the last stage of the solidification. This type of blowhole was formed through four stages of gas in the molten pool, incubation, explosion, back-filling and completion of back-filling stage.2) Most of the pits was back-filled at the last stage of their formation. • Pitting corrosion commonly shaped in hull structure due to marine corrosive environment seriously causes the deterioration of structural performance. This paper deals with the ultimate strength behaviors of stiffened ship panels damaged by the pits subjected to uniaxial compression. A series of no-linear finite element analyses are carried out for three stiffened panels using ABAQUS software. Influences of the investigated typical parameters of pit degree (DOP), depth, location and distribution on the ultimate strength strength are discussed in detail. It is found that the ultimate strength is significantly reduced with increasing the DOP and pit depth and severely affected by the distribution. In addition, the pits including their distributions on the web have a slight effect on the ultimate strength. Compared with regular distribution, random one on the panel result in a change of collapse mode. Finally, an empirical formula as a function of corrosion volume loss is proposed for predicting the ultimate strength of stiffened panel.

  • The characteristics of Bi2212 round wire was systematically studied depending on different heat treatment conditions. Initial wire was drawn after routine PIT (Powder In Tube) process. The wire was divided into 3 pieces with 10 cm in length and 2.5 mm in diameter. 3 wires were pre-heat treated separately by different heat treatment schedules, heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere and centrifugally melted. Pre-heated wires were annealed at $845^{\circ}C$ for 40 hours in oxygen atmosphere. SEM results indicate that all pre-heated wires showed highly oriented microstructure. However the wire by centrifugally melted process showed higher density and better electric properties as compared with 2 other wires pre-heated in air and nitrogen atmosphere. The critical current of a centrifugally melted wire was about 18 A in 77 K.

  • Open-pit mine slope design must be carried out from the economical efficiency and stability point of view. The overall slope angle is the primary design variable because of limited support or reinforce options available. In this study, the slope angle and critical slope height of large coal mine located in Pasir, Kalimantan, Indonesia were determined from safety point of view. Failure time prediction based on the monitored displacement using inverse velocity was also conducted to make up fir the uncertainty of the slope design. From the study, critical slope height was calculated as $353{\sim}438m$ under safety factor guideline (SF>1.5) and $30^{\circ}$ overall slope angle but loom is recommended as a critical slope height considering the results of sensitivity analysis of strength parameters. The results of inverse velocity analysis also showed good agreement with field slope cases. Therefore, failure of unstable slope can be roughly detected before real slope failure.
