Numerical Analysis to Predict Air Flow Phenomena in a Road Tunnel (도로 터널내의 공기유동 양상을 예측하기 위한 수치해석)

  • A 2-dimensional $k-{\varepsilon}$ numerical model was developed to explore the effects of vehicle movement, jet fan and wind speed for the ventilation of road tunnels. To consider the temperature distribution in the tunnel, the energy equation was solved with a source term of the energy exhausted from vehicles. Although the tunnel ventilation can be made by the piston effect of vehicle movement, an additional ventilation is necessary when a head wind is existing. Jet fans may assist the air flow in the tunnel. However, more efficient ventilation system should be necessary, because the exhaust gas from vehicles flow along the road surface and it cannot be diffused in the longitudinal tunnel.

Low Temperature Diffusion Brazing of Commercial Pure(CP)-Ti alloy with Zr-based Filler Metal (Zr기 필러메탈을 이용한 상용 순 티타늄(CP-Ti) 합금의 저온 브레이징 특성)

  • Titanium and its alloys can be usually joined with brazing method. And the alloys should be brazed at low temperature to keep their original microstructure. In this study, the mechanical strength and microstructure of the CP-Ti joint-brazed with $Zr_{54}Ti_{22}Ni_{16}Cu_8$ filler metal having melting temperature of $774{\sim}783^{\circ}C$ were investigated. The tensile strengths of the joint-brazed at $800^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C/min$ of cooling rate showed more than 400 MPa which was as high as base metal. The $Widmanst{\ddot{a}}tten$ structure consisting of Ti and $Ti_2Ni$ phase was observed in the joint area. However, the tensile strengths of the joint-brazed at $800^{\circ}C$ with $15^{\circ}C/min$ of cooling rate were decreased and the Ti, $(Ti,Zr)_2Ni$ and $Ti_2Ni$ phases were observed at the joint area. It is believed that the $(Ti,Zr)_2Ni$ laves phases could decrease the mechanical strength of the joint and the cooling rate should be controled to get high strength of the titanium joint.

Water Chemistry and Age Dating of Thermal Spring in Chullabukdo Region (전라북도 온천수의 수질 화학적 특성과 연대 측정)

  • The chemical characteristics and age dating of the thermal springwater developed recently in Chullabukdo were investigated. The temperature range of the thermal springwater was found 27∼29$^{\circ}C$, indicating a low temperature thermal springwater. The concentration of $F^-$ ion in the springwater was found relatively high in the range of 2∼3 ppm, but $NO_3^-$ ion was nearly not detected. The concentration range of $SO_4^{2-}$ ion was 0.02∼23 ppm, among which $SO_4^{2-}$ content of $Y_3$ was found very high compared to that of other springwater, since this site is known as a sulfur spring. $HCO_3^-$ ion content was found 2∼5 times higher than that of groundwater. $Y_1,\;Y_3,\;Y_5,\;Y_2,\;Y_4,\;and\;Y_8$, were classified as $HCO_3^-$ type, $Y_6$ as $CI^-$type, and $Y_7$, as no domonant type by classification diagram for anion and cation facies. From the results of age dating on the basis of the mean tritium level of precipitation and thermal springs, $Y_1$ was identified as the oldest thermal spring (-89 years) and $Y_7$ was identified as -89 years and $Y_7$ was -1 year using dispersive model. The results calculated by two models agreed well each other.

Evaluation of Cryptosporidiurn Disinfection by Ozone and Ultraviolet Irradiation Using Viability and Infectivity Assays (크립토스포리디움의 활성/감염성 판별법을 이용한 오존 및 자외선 소독능 평가)

  • In the ozone disinfection unit process of a piston type batch reactor with continuous ozone analysis using a flow injection analysis (FIA) system, the CT values for 1 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium parvum by viability assays of DAPI/PI and excystation were $1.8{\sim}2.2\;mg/L{\cdot}min$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $9.1mg/L{\cdot}min$ at $5^{\circ}C$, respectively. At the low temperature, ozone requirement rises $4{\sim}5$ times higher in order to achieve the same level of disinfection at room temperature. In a 40 L scale pilot plant with continuous flow and constant 5 minutes retention time, disinfection effects were evaluated using excystation, DAPI/PI, and cell infection method at the same time. About 0.2 log inactivation of Cryptosporidium by DAPI/PI and excystation assay, and 1.2 log inactivation by cell infectivity assay were estimated, respectively, at the CT value of about $8mg/L{\cdot}min$. The difference between DAPI/PI and excystation assay was not significant in evaluating CT values of Cryptosporidium by ozone in both experiment of the piston and the pilot reactors. However, there was significant difference between viability assay based on the intact cell wall structure and function and infectivity assay based on the developing oocysts to sporozoites and merozoites in the pilot study. The stage of development should be more sensitive to ozone oxidation than cell wall intactness of oocysts. The difference of CT values estimated by viability assay between two studies may partly come from underestimation of the residual ozone concentration due to the manual monitoring in the pilot study, or the difference of the reactor scale (50 mL vs 40 L) and types (batch vs continuous). Adequate If value to disinfect 1 and 2 log scale of Cryptosporidium in UV irradiation process was 25 $mWs/cm^2$ and 50 $mWs/cm^2$, respectively, at $25^{\circ}C$ by DAPI/PI. At $5^{\circ}C$, 40 $mWs/cm^2$ was required for disinfecting 1 log Cryptosporidium, and 80 $mWs/cm^2$ for disinfecting 2 log Cryptosporidium. It was thought that about 60% increase of If value requirement to compensate for the $20^{\circ}C$ decrease in temperature was due to the low voltage low output lamp letting weaker UV rays occur at lower temperatures.

  • The metal matrix composites(MMC) are currently receiving a great deal of attention. These composites possess exellent mechanical and physical properties such as modulus, strength, wear resistance and thermal stability, which make them very attractive for use in automotive piston. In this study, $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$(15%) composites are fabricated by the squeeze casting method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and ductility are performed at room and elevated temperature($250^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$), respectively. Through thermomechanical analyser, thermal expansion coefficient of $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$ composites are conducted for ranging from room temperature to ($400^{\circ}C$.And bending fatigue tests are also performed by the rotary bending machine at room temperature.The tensile strength and elastic modulus have been improved up to 38% and 35% by the addition of the reinforcements, respectively. Thermal expansion coefficients of MMCs which is located normal and parralel to the applied pressure are showed slightly different less than 10%. Fatigue strengh of the composite was improved by about 20% compared with that of unreinforced Al alloy. The results of this study will be used to understand the basic fracture behavior of MMCs and eventually to expand the applocation of MMCs as a machine parts undertaken various loadings.

Numerical Analysis for Optimal Design of Heat Exchanger in Air Compressor for Railroad Vehicle (철도차량용 공기압축기의 열교환기 최적 설계를 위한 해석 연구)

  • In this study, we examined the multi-stage piston-type air compressors typically used in a railroad vehicle, and the heat transfer efficiency was analyzed according to the design conditions of the heat exchanger (a compressor component module for cooling the compressed high temperature air). For the fin-tube heat exchanger used in the most air compressors, numerical analysis was performed to analyze heat transfer by defining the various rectangle tube sizes and the number of fin-per-unit area as design variables under the same flow rate of compressed air. Also, this analysis compared the temperature of the compressed air. Regarding environmental conditions for analysis, the flow rate of the external cooling air was measured and the mean value of the values was applied. And a "turbulence model" was considered in both the external flow of the cooling air and the internal flow inside the tube. From the results of analysis, it was found that the change of the aspect ratio value of the tube greatly influences the heat transfer efficiency of the compressed air, and influences if the fin density is relatively small. As a result, the optimum design specifications of the heat exchanger for air compressors were confirmed based on the analysis of the heat transfer efficiency, according to the design conditions of fin and tube by the operating temperature range of the compressed air.

Effects of Additives on the Friction and Wear Properties of PTFE Composites (PTFE 복합재료의 마찰 . 마모 특성에 미치는 첨가제의 영향)

  • Recently, PTFE-polyimide composites are being used self-lubricating parts for industrial field. Thus, this study is mainly concerned with friction and wear properties for the piston ring of non-lubricating air compressor which made of PTFE-polyimide composites. The friction and wear test was carried out for the different composition ratio under the atmosphere room temperature and constant load of 7.69N and their friction and wear properties were compared with each other at various sliding speed. Notable results are summarized as follows. PTFE 100% showed that friction coefficient was almost same values at 0.94 and 1.88m/s but the value was decreased at 2.83m/s because the friction temperature is higher than low speed. PTFE 80%-PI 20% showed the lowest mean friction coefficient at 2.83m/s. PTFE 20%-PI 80% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94m/s and the value was decreased at high speed but the value is higher than other materials except PTFE 100 %. PI 100% showed the highest friction coefficient at 0.94 and 1.88m/s because adhesive wear mainly occurred that speed. PTFE 100% showed highest specific wear rate on the whole. Specific wear rate of PTFE 80%-PI 20% was almost the same value with PTFE 20%-PI 80%. PI 100% showed the lowest value at high sliding speed because the friction surface was thicken and carbonated by high friction temperature.

THD Analysis of a Surface Textured Parallel Thrust Bearing: Effect of Dimple Radius and Depth (Surface Texturing한 평행 스러스트 베어링의 열유체윤활 해석: 딤플 반경과 깊이의 영향)

  • In order to reduce friction and improve reliability, researchers have applied various surface texturing methods to highly sliding machine elements such as mechanical seals and piston rings. Despite extensive theoretical research on surface texturing, previous numerical results are only applicable to isothermal and iso-viscous conditions. Because the lubricant flow pattern of textured bearing surfaces is much more complicated than that for non-textured bearings, the Navier?Stokes equation is more suitable than the Reynolds equation for the former. This study carries out a thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication analysis to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a single micro-dimpled parallel thrust bearing cell. The analysis involves using the continuity, Navier?Stokes, energy, temperature?viscosity relation, and heat conduction equations with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. This study discretizes these equations using the finite volume method and solves them using the SIMPLE algorithm. The results include finding the streamlines, pressure and temperature distributions, and variations in the friction force and leakage for various dimple radii and depths. Increasing the dimple radius and decreasing the depth causes a recirculation flow to form because of a strong vortex, and the oil temperature greatly increases compared with the non-textured case. The present numerical scheme and results are applicable to THD analysis of various surface-textured sliding bearings and can lead to further study.

Properties of Barley for Extrusion Processing (보리의 Extrusion 가공적성)

  • Using piston type extruder, barley flour was extruded at various processing conditions, The used variables were three shear rates (apparent shear rate 118, 534, $1169sec^{-1}$), four extrusion temperatures(90, 120, 150, $180^{\circ}C$) and three moisture contents (15, 25, 35%). The rheological properties and the extrudate quality were monitored in extrusion. Barley flour showed pseudoplastic behavior having average power law index 0.28 in used shear rate range. When viewed from general appearance, die swell, density, water uptake, rehydration swell and gelatinization degree of extrudate, $25{\sim}35%$ moisture and $120^{\circ}C$ temperature was suitable processing condition for noodle-like product, and 25% moisture and $150^{\circ}C$ temperature was good for snack or flake product. Moisture content of the extrudate can be pretty well estimated from energy balance at higher temperature and higher moisture content.

Evaluation of the Characteristics of the Aluminum Alloy Casting Material by Heat Treatment (AC8A 알루미늄합금 주조재의 열처리에 의한 특성 평가)

  • Aluminum is on active metal, but it is well known that its oxide film plays a role as protective barrier which is comparatively stable in air and neutral aqueous solution. Thus, aluminum alloys have been widely applied in architectural trim, cold & hot-water storage vessels and piping etc., furthermore, the aluminum alloy of AC8A have been widely used in mold casting material of engine piston because of its properties of temperature and wear resistance. In recent years, the oil price is getting higher and higher, thus the using of low quality oil has been significantly increased in engines of ship and vehicle. Therefore it is considered that evaluation of corrosion resistance as well as wear resistance of AC8A material is also important to improve its property and prolong its lifetime. In this study, the effect of solution and tempering heat treatment to corrosion and wear resistance is investigated with electrochemical method and measurement of hardness. The hardness decreased with solution heat treatment compared to mold casting condition, but its value increased with tempering heat treatment and exhibited the highest value of hardness with tempering heat treatment temperature at $190^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. Furthermore, corrosion resistance increased with decreasing of the hardness, and decreased with increasing of the hardness reversely. As a result, it is suggested that the optimum heat treatment to improve both corrosion and wear resistance is tempering heat treatment temperature at $190^{\circ}C$ for 16hrs.
