  • Urban areas face congestion problems that diminish personal mobility and freight-transportation productivity. An increasing number of experts suggest that separating freight traffic from passenger traffic makes sense in terms of economics, the environment, and safety. Some experts suggest that underground freight transportation are the solution. The objective of this paper is to review the potential benefits and limitations of freight pipelines as a viable mode of cargo transport that can alleviate congestion on urban highways.

  • This paper introduces a simulation design decision support system to support the development process of the pipeline network and provide decision support to the operations of the gas pipelines. The system has been implemented on Flash5, which has a multimedia capabilities environment for designing and delivering low- bandwidth animations, presentations, and web sites. It also offers scripting capabilities and server-side connectivity fur creating applications and web interfaces. Hence a user can interact with the system on the World Wide Web.

  • Numerical relativity is one of the crucial tools to theoretically probe systems of strong gravity such as compact binary coalescences and gravitational collapses. Understandings of such systems and gravitational wave forms extracted have been used for implementing data analysis pipelines on ground based gravitational wave observation experiments such as LIGO, Virgo and KGRA currently undergoing. In this talk, brief reviews and perspectives will be given for numerical studies on binary black holes.

  • This paper deals with the non-axisymmetric dynamic response of an imperfectly bonded buried orthotropic pipeline subjected to longitudinal wave (P-wave) excitation. An infinite cylindrical shell model, including the rotary inertia and shear deformation effects, has been used for the pipeline. For some cases comparison of axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric responses have also been furnished.

  • Dependency parsing is often used as a component in many text analysis pipelines. However, performance, especially in specialized domains, suffers from the presence of complex terminology. Our hypothesis is that including named entity annotations can improve the speed and quality of dependency parses. As part of BLAH5, we built a web service delivering improved dependency parses by taking into account named entity annotations obtained by third party services. Our evaluation shows improved results and better speed.

  • In most plant layout optimization researches, MILP(Mixed Integer Linear Programming) problems, in which the objective function includes the costs of pipelines connecting process equipment and cost associated with safety issues, have been employed. Based on these MILP problems, various optimization solvers have been applied to investigate the optimal solutions. To consider safety issues on the objective function of MILP problems together, the accurate information about the impact and the frequency of potential accidents in a plant should be required to evaluate the safety issues. However, it is really impossible to obtain accurate information about potential accidents and this limitation may reduce the reliability of a plant layout problem. Moreover, in real industries such as plant engineering companies, the plant layout is previously fixed and the considerations of various safety instruments and systems have been performed to guarantee the plant safety. To reflect these situations, the two step optimization problems have been designed in this study. The first MILP model aims to minimize the costs of pipelines and the land size as complying sufficient spaces for the maintenance and safety. After the plant layout is determined by the first MILP model, the optimal locations of blast walls have been investigated to maximize the mitigation impacts of blast walls. The particle swarm optimization technique, which is one of the representative sampling approaches, is employed throughout the consideration of the characteristics of MILP models in this study. The ethylene oxide plant is tested to verify the efficacy of the proposed model.
