Theoretical Analysis of Heat Transportation Limitation by Porosity of Wick in Screen Mesh Wick Heat Pipe (스크린메쉬윅 히트파이프에서 윅의 기공율변화에 따른 열수송한계의 이론적 고찰)

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the capillary heat transportation limitation in heat pipe according to the change of screen mesh wick porosity. Diameter of pipe was 6 mm, and mesh numbers are 100, 150, 200 and 250 and water was selected as a working fluid. According to the change of wick porosity and mesh number, the capillary pressure, pumping pressure, liquid friction coefficient in wick, vapor friction coefficient, and capillary heat transportation limitation are analyzed by theoretical design method of a heat pipe. As some results, the capillary heat transportation limitation in screen mesh wick heat pipe is largely affected by wick porosity and mesh number.

  • Local heating transportation pipe has sensor and return lines to detect water-leakage. There are impulse and resistance comparison measurement types for a water-leakage detection. The impulse type shows large detection error within a measurement range. Since the resistance comparison type can find a comparative accurate single water-leakage point in the measurement range of heating pipe, it has been used to detect water-leakages these days. However if the multi water-leakages are happened in the measurement range of transportation pipe. the resistance comparison type shows a detection error point by the parallel resistance between a detection sensor line and ground. But the detection error will be minimized by the divided transportation pipe loops. In this research, it suggests the design of remote controlled detection system which can divide a large pipe loop and a possible single water-leakage measurement process in each divided loops.

Challenges and Future of Prefabricated Pipe Spools

  • Prefabrication is a construction technique that is increasingly being applied to different building components due to its many benefits, including higher quality and lower waste. Despite these advantages, there are challenges in execution of these components on projects, due to transportation logistics, skilled labor requirements, and project management techniques. This paper investigates the current landscape of prefabricated pipe spools and potential solutions for minimizing these challenges. The scope of this research includes a proposed workflow, to standardize implementation of these components. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry professionals to assess current industry practices and the validity of the proposed workflow. Findings of this paper indicate that greater integration between design, fabrication and transportation is required to minimize inefficiencies when implementing prefabricated pipe spools on projects.

  • Unlike other facilities, maintaining processes is essential in industrial facilities. Pipe racks, which support pipes of various diameters, are important structures used in industrial facilities. Since the transport process of pipes directly affects the operation of industrial facilities, a fragility curve should be derived based on considering not only the pipe racks' structural safety but also the pipes' transport process. There are several studies where the fragility curves have been determined based on the structural behavior of pipe racks. However, few studies consider the damage criteria of pipes to ensure the transportation process, such as local buckling and tensile failure with surface defects. In this study, an analysis model of a typical straight pipe rack used in domestic industrial facilities is constructed, and incremental dynamic analysis using nonlinear response history analysis is performed to estimate the parameters of the fragility curve by the maximum likelihood estimation. In addition, the pipe rack's structural behavior and the pipe's damage criteria are considered the limit state for the fragility curve. The limit states considered in this paper to evaluate fragility curves are more reasonable to ensure the transportation process of the pipe systems.

  • The heat transportation from a complex of industry to a rural area needs more efficient method because the distance between them is usually more than 10km. Conventional heat transportation using steam or hot water via pipe line has limits in transportation distance (about 3-5 km) because of the heat loss and frictional loss in the pipe line. Metal hydride can absorb or discharge hydrogen through exothermic and endothermic reaction. After releasing hydrogen from metal hydride with heatings by waste heat from industry we can transport this hydrogen to the rural area via pipe line. In the urban areas other metal hydride reacts with this hydrogen and produces heat for heating. Cool heat is also obtained if it is possible to use metal hydride with low reaction temperature. So metal hydride can be used as a media for transportation, storage of heat. Some problems of the heat transportation using metal hydrides, and the example of heat transportation system were discussed.

Seismic response of pipes under the effect of fluid based on exact solution

  • One of the best choice for transportation of oil and gas at the end of rivers or seas is concrete pipelines. In this article, a concrete pipe at the end of river is assumed under the earthquake load. The Classic shell theory is applied for the modelling and the corresponding motion equations are derived by energy method. An external force induced by fluid around the pipe is asssumed in the final motion equations. For the solution of motion equations, the differential quadrature method (DQM) and Newmark method are applied for deriving the dynamic deflection of the pipe. The effects of various parameters including boundary conditions, fluid and length to thickness ratio are presented on the seismic response of the concrete pipe. The outcomes show that the clamped pipe has lower dynamic deflection with respect to simply pipe. In addition, with the effect of fluid, the dynamic defelction is increased significantly.

Strain demand prediction method for buried X80 steel pipelines crossing oblique-reverse faults

  • The reverse fault is a dangerous geological hazard faced by buried steel pipelines. Permanent ground deformation along the fault trace will induce large compressive strain leading to buckling failure of the pipe. A hybrid pipe-shell element based numerical model programed by INP code supported by ABAQUS solver was proposed in this study to explore the strain performance of buried X80 steel pipeline under reverse fault displacement. Accuracy of the numerical model was validated by previous full scale experimental results. Based on this model, parametric analysis was conducted to study the effects of four main kinds of parameters, e.g., pipe parameters, fault parameters, load parameter and soil property parameters, on the strain demand. Based on 2340 peak strain results of various combinations of design parameters, a semi-empirical model for strain demand prediction of X80 pipeline at reverse fault crossings was proposed. In general, reverse faults encountered by pipelines are involved in 3D oblique reverse faults, which can be considered as a combination of reverse fault and strike-slip fault. So a compressive strain demand estimation procedure for X80 pipeline crossing oblique-reverse faults was proposed by combining the presented semi-empirical model and the previous one for compression strike-slip fault (Liu 2016). Accuracy and efficiency of this proposed method was validated by fifteen design cases faced by the Second West to East Gas pipeline. The proposed method can be directly applied to the strain based design of X80 steel pipeline crossing oblique-reverse faults, with much higher efficiency than common numerical models.

Heat Transfer Experiment and Analysis to Predict the Efficiency of Heat Exchanger for Deep Geothermal System (심부지열 용 동축 열교환기 성능예측을 위한 열전달 실험 및 해석)

  • The Heat exchanger for deep geothermal system is very important to enhance the efficiency of the system. The co-axial heat exchanger is used due to the limitation of digging space. The heat transfer on the external surface of outer pipe should be high to receive a large amount of heat from the ground. However, the inner pipe should be insulated to reduce the heat loss and increase the temperature of discharge water. This study made experiment apparatus to describe the co-axial heat exchanger and measure the heat transfer coefficients on the internal and external surface. And the pin-fin was designed and fixed on the internal surface to increase the efficiency of heat exchanger. Finally, we calculated the temperature of discharge water using the heat transfer circuit of co-axial heat exchanger and heat transfer coefficient which from experimental results. The water temperature was reached the ground temperature at -500 m and following the ground temperature. When the water return to the ground surface, the water temperature was decreased due to heat loss. As the pin-fin case, the heat transfer coefficient on the internal surface was decreased by 30% and it mean that the pin-fin help to insulate the inner pipe. However, the discharge water temperature did not change although pin-fin fixed on the inner pipe.

  • Study of Lunar exploration is progressed and manned lunar exploration is planned. In order to explore in Lunar, we need habitat to stay for a long time and system that mine, classify and transport materials. Lunar has dust that is very light-tiny. That is on the air for a long time so there are problems to adject transportation system such as vehicle. However, it can solve the problem to use pipe transportation system. This transportation system help materials move continually and is more effective than other transportation system such as train or vehicle. For those positive points, some experts studied about tube transportation systems. I introduce these system and find out factors that can be used in Lunar regolith transportation system. I suggest Lunar regolith transportation system, using the factors.
