  • This study was carried out to observe the effects of two soil mixtures, various nitrogen levels, and inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi on the growth of 1-year-old Pinus thunbergil seedlings in pots. The seedlings were treated with various combinations of above factors and grown one more year in pots. 1. Number of short roots, mycorrhizal short roots, height growth, and total dry weight were higher in vermiculite than in sandy loam. 2. 2-year-old P. thunbergii seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius mycorrhizal fungi showed significant increase in primary lateral roots, short roots, and total dry weight than those of uninoculated seedlings. 3. The growth of 2-year-old P. thunbergii seedlings was affected by infection with mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen fertilization of precious year.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the different effects of ectomycorrhizal fungal (ECMF) species on the growth of seedlings of Pinus densiflora, and the effects of ECMF diversity on plant productivity. A total of five species of ECMF were isolated from root tips of pine seedlings collected from Mt. Songni and used as inocula. Pots containing pine seedlings were inoculated with either a single ECMF species or a mixture of five ECMF species. All of the seedlings formed ECM on their roots except for the control plants. The pine seedlings' growth responses varied by the different ECMF species. Also, pine seedlings inoculated with a mixture of five ECMF species showed the highest growth response. The results of the study suggest that the colonization of diverse species of ECMF will increase plant productivity, and the selection of suitable ECMF species could be an important factor for plant growth.

  • This study aimed to figure out and compare the increment of biomass by thinning intensity focused on the plantation of the two major coniferous species (Larix kaempferi and Pinus koraiensis) of South Korea. The inventory interval was three years under the effects of three types of thinning treatments; control (no thinning), light (20% thinning) and heavy (40% thinning). The results showed standing biomass increment of both species decreased as thinning intensity increased (heavylight>control). Meanwhile, the lowest of on-site biomass changes occurred in the control plot, and the greatest was in the heavy thinning plot because thinning was involved with leaving the felling residual biomass (leaves, branches and roots) on the site. According to the results from this short-term study, unthinned stands is preferable for maximizing standing biomass as well as carbon sequestration. However long-term investigation should be considered in order to see more clear results.

  • To determine whether the Tricholoma matsutake (pine mushroom, Songyi) is symbiotic or parasitic to Pinus densiflora, structural change in their natural ectomycorrhizas were examined. The mycorrhizal samples were collected at three progressional points in the natural hypogeous colony(shiro) : colony front edge, near the fruiting point and 20cm back. The fine roots in the colonies were typical ectomycorrhizas with fungal mantle and Hartig net. However, the T. matsutake mycorrhizas had unique characteristics compared to other types of ectomycorrhizas. That is, spatially the fungal mantle and Hartig net of the T. matsutake mycorrhizas continued to develop along the growing tip, while temporally those structures declined to shrink changing to black brown in the older part of the roots behind the actively growing tip portion. However, there was no mark that the fungal hyphae penetrated into either the cortical cells, endodermal cell layers or stele. The apical tips of the blackened roots remained alive to form new mycorrhizas with other fungi later. Therefore, we conclude that the mycorrhiza of T. matsutake+P. densiflora is rather a dynamic symbiosis that changes its position spatiotemporally as the root grows than either a simple parasitism or symbiosis.

  • Trials to find a method for overcoming the depletion of Tricholoma matsutake mycorrhiza from the artificially inoculated pine seedling (Pinus densiflora) when it is transplanted in situ were carried out. The culturing jars containing mycorrhizal seedlings were punched at the bottom to make the jar like a pot with keeping the soil structure of the original medium in vitro, and 8 kinds of irrigation solution were applied. Irrigation of distilled water caused disappearance of T. matsutake mycorrhizae, but biweekly irrigation of 2.5% PDMP (24 g potato dextrose broth, 3 g malt extract, 1 g peptone) solution or 0.5% Tween 80 solution until 3 months of acclimation could keep mycorrhizal association stronger. The percentage of mycorrhizal roots out of total length of roots was increased during the acclimation, and the acclimation rate reached up to 70%. Thus, we recommend that the mycorrhizal pine seedlings inoculated with T. matsutake would be acclimated before transplanting into the field.

  • This study was carried out to indentify the mycorrhizal development and growth stimulation of Pinus thunbergii seedlings grown on soil growth media which mixed with various amounts of pine bark. The results were follow ; 1. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius were significantly increased in number of short roots and mycorrhizal short roots, height, maximum growth rate, and leaf area than those of no-inoculation. 2. Mycorrhizal formation according to bark contents was highest by 25% bark treatment, and decreased in 50 and 75% bark contents. 3. Within the same treatment of bark content, seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius showed more increased height and leaf, stem, and root dry weight than those of no-inoculated.

  • Because of the underground existence of roots, a few studies have been reported on root system. The developmental information of roots should be understood for the studies of specific tree traits and the influence of such traits on the soil surface fixation. In order to clarify the specific character of pine forest in Kangwon Province, the investigation on the form and distribution of root system of pine trees were carried out for 5 trees in the Campus Forest, Kangwon National Univ.. Root form was very well in flat root. As soil depth was approximatly 50cm, fine roots were very sparsly distributed(+), roots of 0.2cm in diameter were most common and roots > 0.2cm were very rare, also thickness thined. 60~70% all the roots were developed at the depth of 0~30cm, where big roots were below 0.9cm in diameter and fine roots were higly sparse(+).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth characteristics of artificially planted trees on top of the underground parking lots. The trees were planted 17 years ago and are now in good condition. The survey results are as follows. The planting depth of the trees was 0.9 - 1.3m. The horizontal roots of the trees were distributed in the depth of 0.2m ~ 0.6m, Growth condition was also considered to be good. Also, in the case of the straight root of the trees, the pine tree(Pinus densiflora) grew near the bottom but tree root was very thin, and the Japanese hackberry tree(Celtis sinensis) and the zelkova tree(Zelkova serrata) were seemed to bend at the bottom and to grow by changing direction. When trees were planted on artificial ground, the roots grew well horizontally, and the forces of growing vertically were much weakened. because the plants were planted in earth ball state. As a result, it was considered that the roots would hardly penetrate the bottom-pressing concrete floor.

  • In order to find out the basic factors governing the rooting ability of pine cutting, the rooting of cuttings of Pinus thunbergii were examined under various conditions. A total of 5 different solutions of growth hormones made up of 3-indole butyric acid, naphthalene acetic acide and rootone were employed at three different periods of year, the middle of June, the end of September and the early of December. Cuttings prepared in length of 4cm gave better results than those of control ones. Cuttings taken from the 1-0 seedlings were superior to those from the 7-year-old trees. Seasonal variation, i.e., time of collecting cutting materials, played great important role on rooting. The majority of roots were originated from the callus lamp formed at the base of cut surface.
