The antimicrobial active substance of EtOAc extracts were successively purified with solvent fractionation, silica gel adsorption column chromatography and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The purified active substance was isolated as crystals and identified as benzoic acid by $MS,\;^{1}H-NMR\;and\;^{13}C-NMR$. The amount of benzoic acid was 0.608 mg per gram of fresh needle of Pinus densiflora.

  • Some aspects of the change in the rate of gall formation on the red pine, Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini, by the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis Uchida et Inouye, were investigated at the coastal area in Chung Nam-Do from 1977 to 1982, and were analyzed with the nationwide survey data for 2 years from 1980 to 1981. The results obtained were as follows; the gall formation rate in several areas was compared between two consecutive generations. Four regression equations were established, with X as the gall formation rate in N year and Y as that in (N+1) year: 1) Y=11.2+1.15X (r=0.833) for the stands facing north on the phase of insect population increase, 2) Y=14.3+0.82X (r=0.739) for the stands facing south on the phase of population increase, 3) Y=7.3+0.46X (r=0.478) for stands facing north on the phase of population decrease and 4) Y=11.4+0.19X (r=0.086) for stands facing south on the phase of population decrease. After invasion of the pine needle gall midge into a red pine forest, gall formation rate increased for 6 consecutive generations and then decreased to low level within a period of another 6 years.

  • The extracts of Pinus densiflora sawdust by n hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol solvent were investigated to identify their mycelial growth inhibition against Lentinus edodes. The yields of n hexane soluble fraction, ethyl acetate-soluble fraction, and methanol soluble fraction from P. densiflora sawdust were obtained 1.36%, 2.21% and 4.03% using organic solvent, respectively. The mycelial growth inhibition of L. edodes was the greatest for n hexane extract, ranging from 36.5% to 47.6% at concentrations of 125 ppm to 1,000 ppm, with the values for all concentrations significantly different from one another. After direct extraction of P. densiflora sawdust using n hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol, each extract was separated into three fractions by silica gel column chromatography and then the fractions were isolated on the values of $R_f$ by thin layer chromatography. The mycelial growth inhibition against L. edodes was recognized in the fractions II (33.5%) and III (37.6%) of n hexane extract, the fraction II (21.4%) of ethyl acetate extract and the fraction II (26.4%) of methanol extract. The fractions III of n-hexane extract showed the highest growth inhibition among the nine fractions of the organic solvent extract.

  • An antioxidant was isolated from pine needles. This compound was identified as 4-hydroxy-5-methyl-3[2H]-furanone on the basis of spectroscopic evidences and by the comparison with the synthetic one from the Maillard reaction of xylose and glycine. It scavenged 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radicals more efficiently than 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3[2H]-furanone and $3-hydroxy-2-methyl-{\gamma}-pyrone$ did. It exhibited inhibitory effects on the autoxidation of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine and linolenic acid.

  • To increase production of Tricholoma matsutake, experiments were carried out in a mountain located in Keumma 2-ri, Joocheon-myun, Yongwol-gun, Kangwon-do, Korea during the period from April to November 1979. The area of the experiment showed pH 6.55 of soil acidity and the rock was found to be granite. Among its vegetation, the major growths were Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini, Rhododendron mucronulatum Turcz., Rhododendron schlippenhachii Max., Lespedeza bicolor and Pteridium aquilinum (Linne) Kuhn var. japonicum Nakai. Of two equally divided areas of A and B in which pine mushrooms grew, artificial methods such as thinning the upper portion of land raking and water-spraying were applied to area B only, where 21% increase of the production was obtained as compared with the control area A.

  • For the development of Moru wine with enhanced sensory qualities, Moru (Vitis amurensis) wines were fermented with pine needles from Pinus densiflora Siebold et Zuccarini to make Moru-pine wine or medicinal herbs from Astragali Radix and Viscum album to make Moru-herb wine. Moru without pine needles or medicinal herbs was included as a control. Pine needles and Astragali Radix/Viscum album delayed the fermentation of Moru wine, but after 40 days of fermentation and aging, final ethanol contents, pH, acidity, and the sugar/organic acid content in these kinds of Moru wines had no differences. The final ethanol level and acidity of Moru wines were 11.5~12.9% and 1.1~1.2%, respectively, but any sugars (glucose, fructose and sucrose) were not detected in all Moru wines. These results are consistent with the general characteristics of Moru wines, which have a high acidity and low sugar contents. Relatively low browness and antocyanins were detected in Moru-herb wine decreasing its chromaticity in a sensory test. Overall, the supplements of Astragali Radix/Viscum album reduced the color of normal Moru wine, which might be applied toward the development of conventional Moru wines.
