  • This laboratory study examined the impact of free chlorine residual and pipe material on the formation of biofilm in drinking water distribution pipe surfaces. Result of heterotrophic plate counts(HPC) of the biofilm in the tap water-supplied reactor averaged $2.17{\times}10^5CFU/cm^2$ on PVC and $2.43{\times}10^5CFU/cm^2$ on STS 316, respectively. HPCs on the surface exposed to the tap water containing 0.2mg/L of free chlorinne residual averaged $4.24{\times}10^4CFU/cm^2$ on PVC and $6.54{\times}10^4CFU/cm^2$ on STS 316, respectively. Average of HPC/Total direct counts in the tap water-supplied reactor ranged from 1.08%(PVC) to 1.26%(STS 316) and from 0.38%(PVC) to 0.65%(STS 316) in the reactor supplemented with disinfectant, respectively. No correlation was observed between disinfectant addition and biofilm density. With regard to the biofilm formation, little difference existed between PVC and STS 316. Yellow and red pigmented bacteria were the dominant expressions in bulk fluid, whereas non-pigmented bacteria were found dominant in the biofilm. Pink/red pigmented bacteria were found to be facultative anaerobic, while yellow pigmented bacteria and non-pigmented bacteria were found to be obligate aerobic.

  • Oxygen isotope compositions of whole rock and/or mineral separates (quartz and feldspar) have been determined for the granitic and related rocks from the Wolf River Batholith, Wisconsin. Hydrothermal alteration resulting in the decrease of ${\Delta}_{Q-F}$/ values was obaserved locally throughout the batholith. Feldspars of different colors (pink, gray and red) were separated whenever feasible and analyzed. Most red feldspars (An$_{10-30}$/) show the highest and constant ${\delta}^18O$/ values (9.3~10.0 permil) suggesting nearly complete isotope exchange with hydrothermal fluid. Based on ${\delta}^18O$/ values and the alteration temperatures (260~$350^{\circ}C$) estimated from fluid inclusion study, ${\delta}^18O$/ of fluid is calculated to be $5.0{\pm}1.4$ permil. Phanerozoic sedimentary formation water in Wisconsin is most likely the source of the fluid.

  • Building stones can be divided into two groups: raw stone and stone product. In Korea, they consist of granite, diorite, gabbro, andesite, tuff, slate and marble, of which granite is main product. The disribution area is approximately $31,753km^2$. The enterprises of building stone are about 1,500 at present. The granites for building stone are biotite granite, hornblende granite. granodiorite and porphyritic granite, of different colors (white, pink, grey, green and black). The compressive strength of granite ranges from 813 to $1,338kg/cm^2$, hardness from 78 to 101 and water absorption ratio from 0.09 to 0.40%. The weight reduction ratio of granite for 14 hours in aqua regia+$KMnO_4$solution is 0.3~4.5wt.%. There are eighty granite quarries in Korea. Marbles can also be extensively used for building but only a few mines are operated at present.

  • Safflower, a natural dye representing red, is the dye that materials and dyeing method are recorded in the literature, including materials and dyeing. Although the safflower is the same, the ash used as a mordant is recorded differently in each literature, which greatly affects the aesthetic perspective in realizing the traditional safflower red. Therefore, the optimal conditions for realizing the traditional safflower red were sought. The experiment was conducted by pH investigation, dyeing and color analysis by dyeing solution water, concentration, and temperature by ash, and the unique color of red was confirmed. As a result of the test, the pH point of time when the uniq ue color was expressed was 11.53 as goosefoot ash (natural bedrock water), which was 1:100 for concentration and 70℃ for temperature, which was easier to extract red pigment than other ash, indicating that it is suitable for safflower dyeing. The analysis of the ash showed that K and Si play an important role in dyeing, especially Si, which is an element that inhibits carthamon. The color of red was similar to that of KS Standard vivid purplish red in the ash of the goosefoot, and the other ash was deep purplish pink. In the light of findings, it was possible to quantify the dyeing method through traditional materials and find the standard color of red color, and it is judged to be a basic data for studying the unique color of natural materials.

  • The effect of gamma irradiation on the physicochemical properties of chicken meat and its sensory quality were investigated during 41 days of storage at 3 to $4^{\circ}C$ following irradiation of 5 to 10 kGy. Immediately after irradiation, the water holding capacity of chicken meat decreased slightly with the increase of irradiation dose, whereas during storage, the water holding capacity of irradiated groups was superior to that of the nonirradiated ones. With increasing the irradiation dose and storage time, the TBA values of irradiated groups were higher than those of nonirradiated ones. The volatile basic nitrogen content of nonirradiated group markedly increased over 20mg% by microbial spoilage from the 10th day of storage, however, the irradiated groups of over 8 kGy showed only the 16 to 18mg% until 41 days of storage. The irradiated groups had a slight irradiation-odour that dissipated during up to 3 days of storage, and also they showed a slight pink discoloration in the carcasses and this tendency was much more pronounced with increasing irradiation dose. The nonirradiated group gave off an off-odour due to the spoilage around 5 to 7 days of storage and showed a change in meat appearance, while the irradiated groups of over 5 kGy maintained a fresh state during the 25 to 30 days of storage.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the meat color and water holding capacity (WHC) characteristics of PSE, RSE (reddish-pink, soft, exudative), RFN (reddish-pink, firm, non-exudative) and DFD pork quality, also the relationship of lightness $(L^*-value)$ and WHC to drip loss were examined. When WHC in M. longissimus dorsi muscle by filter paper press method was measured at 45 min postmortem (45 min p.m.), DFD meat indicated the highest WHC, RSE and RFN pork were significantly different (p<0.05). WHC measured at 24 hr postmortem were not significantly different between RSE and RFN pork (p.0.05). Drip loss (%) were significantly different among the four quality group, but cooking loss (%) of PSE, RSE and RFN pork were not significantly different, except DFD. PSE pork indicated the lowest salt soluble protein solubility. The correlation between drip loss and $L^*-value$ was r=0.61, drip loss increased with increasing $L^*-value$. Also drip loss were moderately correlated with $WHC_{4.5\;min\;p.m.}$ (r=-0.47), with $WHC_{24\;hr\;p.m.}$ (r=-0.52). When drip loss was predictable from $L^*-value$ and WHC, $L^*-value$ was superior to evaluation by WHC.
