  • The lateral bearing capacity of the micropile depends on the installed conditions such as number, installation angle and spacing of the pile. Existing research on micropile has been limited to the evaluation of vertical bearing characteristics and suggestion of effective installation methods, and there are few studies on failure mechanisms such as failure mode. And most of the studies on the lateral bearing capacity of micropile are also on the 1-row micropile. Therefore, in this study, a model test was performed to evaluate the behavior and lateral bearing characteristics of a 2-row micropile when the installed conditions such as the installation length, angle, and spacing of the pile were different. As a result of the model test, when the installation angle is θ > 0° (Not cross installation), the lateral bearing capacity of 2-row micropile depends on the spacing of the piles, and the installation angle θ = +30° was the most effective for increasing the bearing capacity. In addition, when the installation angle is θ < 0° (Overlap installation), it depends on the spacing and angle of the pile, and the condition of installation angle θ = -15° was found to be the most effective for increasing the bearing capacity.

  • After open -ended model pipe pile, which was composed of inner tube and outer tube was driven by different installation methods, degradation in open -ended pipe pile capacity was studied during simulated horizontal seismic shaking, which was modeled by records of actual earthquake. Drgradation in ultimate capacity of open -ended pipe pile during simulated earthquake was about 20% in impact pile and was approached up to about 40% in vibratal pile. Most of degradation in ultimate pile capacity was occured in the outer shaft surface and degradations in outer skin friction, toe resistance of steel, and plugging force were about 80%, 10%, 10%, respectively. out of ultimate pile capacity. It appeared that this trend did not depend upon the different installation methods of pile.

  • To increase the bearing capacity of existing auger-drilled piles and decrease the noise and vibration during the installation of the piles, Spirally-reamed and Under-reamed auger trilled piling methods were developed. Field tests were performed to verify the inurement degree of bearing capacity and the constructional possibility of the new augerdrilled piling methods. The test results showed that the bearing capacity of the new augertrilled piles was fairly improved by the grooves of piles, and the skin friction was affected by the groove height and spacing between grooves. It was found that the skin friction takes the great part of total bearing capacity in auger drilled Biles, i.e. 74~80% in case of the existing methods and 81~86% in case of these methods. Moreover, the settlement of spirally-reamed and under reamed piles was smaller than that of the existing augerdrilled pile for the same loading state.

  • Analytical studies on piles so far have been directed toward prediction of bearing capacity under vertical loads. Various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the predicted values with the pile load test measurements. Accordingly, by means of the ultimate load from the data measured by the actual field load tests of PHC piles, safety factors were compared and analyzed static and dynamic formula methods applying to 4 different sites. As a result, the safety factor by Meyerhof formula method indicates 3.0 and the safety factor by Hiley formula method indicates 5.0.

  • Among soft ground improvement methods by using granular material, the sand compaction pile method has been widely utilized in Korea, but, as a result of shortage and increase of unit price of sand, a necessity of an alternative method has been required. In this study, a series of in-situ static load tests for crushed-stone compaction piles were performed. Pile diameter was fixed to 700mm and areas of loading plates were changed. The static load tests were performed for area replacement ratios of 20, 30 and 40% respectively. Based on the test results, bearing capacity of single crushed-stone compaction pile was estimated. It showed that the settlement decreases as the replacement ratio increases. Also, a yielding capacity equation of the crushed-stone compaction pile considering replacement ratio was suggested.

  • For the structural foundation above the soft clay layer conditions, the design charts are first presented for the evaluation of both bearing capacity and total settlement in the basic raft foundation system. wad settlement relationship curves are used to evaluate the ultimate soil bearing capacity. The total settlement is evaluated by applying various traditional factors into the ultimate bearing capacity. Then, the parametric studies are carried out for the piled-raft foundation system. In the numerical analysis, the elasto-pastic finite element model(Mohr-Coulomb model) is used to present the foundation response and design charts, which enable the determination of the raft size and pile length and spacing.

  • In doing the foundation work in the downtown, the popular complaints by means of Noise and vibration have been became heavy burden. Therefore, the noise & vibration-free screw PHC pile method will contribute to the foundation work by removal of the popular complaints and improvement of the constructability. In this paper, the load bearing capacity and displacement characteristics of the noise & vibration-free screw PHC pile were analyzed. The noise & vibration-free screw PHC pile's behavior was better well than the existing PHC pile's one.
