  • We have investigated chemical properties of the pigments and carried out the deterioration diagnosis using nondestructive techniques of the wall painting in Yaksajeon Hall of Gwanyongsa Temple. As the results of pigments analysis, it was unusual that the cobalt was detected in the blue and green colors used to traditional paint background. According to the deterioration diagnosis, ultrasonic measurement and infrared thermography, dominant cracks and exfoliation caused by high content of moisture. Therefore, it should be devised effective plan to prevent penetration of water for the long term this wall painting.

  • The Monascus azaphilone (MAz) pigment is a well-known food colorant that has yellow, orange and red components. The structures of the yellow and orange MAz differ by two hydride reductions, with yellow MAz being the reduced form. Orange MAz can be non-enzymatically converted to red MAz in the presence of amine derivatives. It was previously demonstrated that mppE and mppG are involved in the biosynthesis of yellow and orange MAz, respectively. However, ${\Delta}mppE$ and ${\Delta}mppG$ knockout mutants maintained residual production of yellow and orange MAz, respectively. In this study, we deleted the region encompassing mppD, mppE and mppG in M. purpureus and compared the phenotype of the resulting mutant (${\Delta}mppDEG$) with that of an mppD knockout mutant (${\Delta}mppD$). It was previously reported that the ${\Delta}mppD$ strain retained the ability to produce MAz but at approximately 10% of the level observed in the wildtype strain. A chemical analysis demonstrated that the ${\Delta}mppDEG$ strain was still capable of producing both yellow and orange MAz, suggesting the presence of minor MAz route(s) not involving mppE or mppG. Unexpectedly, the ${\Delta}mppDEG$ strain was observed to accumulate fast-eluting pigments in a reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. A LC-MS analysis identified these pigments as ethanolamine derivatives of red MAz, which had been previously identified in an mppE knockout mutant that produces high amounts of orange MAz. Although the underlying mechanism is largely unknown, this study has yielded an M. purpureus strain that selectively accumulates red MAz.

  • Ceramic pigments were developed by using 4 kinds of Brass scraps. Each Brass scraps were mixed with same weight-ratio of Husk ash, and fine-ground by Rotate ring mill(RRG-120, Armstech industrial. co. Ltd, Korea) after firing at $900^{\circ}C$, $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$. As a result, analysis of particle size of synthetic pigments by particle size analyser, they are $3{\mu}m$ as average. The resulting pigments were characterized by using XRD, FT-IR, SEM Structure of the crystals are Zn2SiO4,, and ZnO, Cu2O, CuO, and cristobalite are existed and particles' shape are plate or needle. As a result of analysis of chemical composition by XRF, synthetic pigments have high SiO2 and CuO content and have SnO2, ZnO and NiO, too. 1wt%, 3wt% and 5wt% pigments were added in each lime glaze, lime-barium glaze and lime-magnesia glaze, and fired at oxidation and reducing atmosphere to figure hue in glazes out. As a result of analysis of color, chroma and brightness by UV, colors of glazes fired at oxidation atmosphere turned into green from sky blue, and colors of glazes fired at reducing atmosphere turned into pink and red.

  • For the purposed of improving the utilization of natural chemical pigment, carthamin, of Carthamus tinctorius, the effective extraction methods on this compound were pursued in the present study. The best solvent for the extraction was found to be the 1 %(v/v) NaOH solution, at 25 hours. In addition, more carthamin was extracted flowers from main stem than fromb-ranches . The carthamin content of Korean local safflower was shown to be higher than that of Japanese variety used for medicinal uses.

  • As a preliminary test for defining intact yellow croaker pigment, the pigment was analyzed by column chromatography and UV-vis spectrophotometry. All maximum absorbance wavelengths commonly showed three maximum absorbance ranges, similar to those of carotenoid, suggesting that the tested pigment may be carotenoid. We detected total six peak RT values in the chromatogram through PDA-HPLC under gradient mode (behavior A at 10% for initial 2 min and changed to behavior B for 60 min). Most pigments were detected at the peak with 3.27 RT value. Because seven peaks were detected under gradient mode and three under isocratic mode [methanol : methylene chloride (90 : 10, v/v)], gradient mode was determined to be more appropriate for quantitative analysis. By the comparison test of RT values among yellow pigment in croakers and reference pigments, such as zeaxanthine, ${\beta}-cryptoxanthine$, ${\beta}-carotene$, and astaxanthin, only ${\beta}-cryptoxanthine$ was detected in the white croaker, whereas such pigment of yellow croaker having RT value of 31.02 was not detected. Therefore, RT value was found to be applicable for detecting adulterated croaker.

  • Red tide has caused massive fish kills in Korean coastal waters with devastating economic loss in the aquaculture industry since 1995. Remote sensing technique has shown to be effective for the detection of red tide in wide areas, where the absorption property of red tide water plays a central role in understanding the red tide reflectance. This study analyzed the optical absorption property of sea waters dominated by the dinoflagellate specie of Alexandirum affine, off the Tongyeong area in August, 2017. Water samples collected from 20 stations in the ship-based campaign were measured for absorption by pigment, suspended solid, and dissolved organic matter, with the corresponding water quality variables such as chlorophyll concentration and total suspended solid. The analysis showed that Alexandrium-dominated water exhibits strong absorption in the spectral range below 400 nm unlike that of diatom-dominated waters, and greater fluctuations in the range of 400 nm - 500 nm. The packaging effect in pigment absorption was stronger in Alexandrium-dominated waters, and the exponent in the absorption by detritus and gelbstoff is disparate for diatom and Alexandrium. In the model for the detritus and gelbstoff absorption (adg(λ)=adg0)e-s(λ-λ0)), the optimal exponent coefficient(s) for the Alexandrium was close to 0.01 rather than to 0.015, which was commonly use for modelling diatom waters.

  • To observe the influence of tetrahedral and octahedral preference of cations of Ni2+, Ti4+ upon the formation and the color development of the MgO-SnO2 spinel containing Ni2+ and Ti4+ ions, the gradual substitution of Ni2+ ions for Mg2+ ions and of Ti4+ ions for Sn4+ ions of the spinel in NiO-MgO-SnO2-TiO2 system was carried out. On samples prepared by calcining the oxide and basic carbonate mixtures at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hour, the X-ray analysis, measurement of reflectance and the test of their stability as a glaze pigment were also carried out. On samples prepared by calcining the oxide and basic carbonate mixtures at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hour, the X-ray analysis, measurement of reflectance and the test of their stabiality as a glaze pigment were also carried out. The results are summarized as follows. 1) As increasing the amounts of Ni2+ ions in the xNiO.(2-x)MgO.SnO2 system, spinel was not formed easily, and the mixed-spinel was formed in NiO.MgO.SnO2 of x=1 but the spinels was not formed completely in the range of x>1.5 2) The spinels was not more formed in NiO-MgO-TiO2 system than NiO-MgO-SnO2 system. Therefore, Ti4+ ions have strong octahedral preference than Sn4+ ions. The color changed the yellow region little. The mixed-spinel or non-spinel was formed easily NiO.TiO2, MgO.TiO2 of illmenite type as the gradual substitution of Ti4+ ions for Sn4+ ions. 3) The results of glaze test. The color changed from white through graish brown to brown as the gradual substitution of Ni2+ ions for Mg2+ ions in calcium-zinc glaze and calcium glaze, and from white through light yellowish beige to dull beige in tile glaze. Also, the color did not change generally as the gradual substitution of Ti4+ ions for Sn4+ ions in NiO-MgO-SnO2-TiO2 system.
