A technology that newly attract attention in the area of energy-related study is the energy harvesting(or scavenging) technology. In this paper, the performance of power generation for the energy harvesting block with a combination of piezoelectric technology and electromagnetic technology among various energy harvesting technologies was investigated. The goal of this study is to evaluate on the applicability of our developed energy harvesting block into the field of urban & housing. First, we evaluated the performance of power generation for the multi-layer energy harvester at laboratory scale. Second, we described the features of our developed prototype module that includes amplification technologies to improve power density per module and evaluated the performance of power generation for the energy harvesting block in a variety of ways. From the test results, the developed product increased the performance of power generation up to 255% or 505% compared to the existing product and its superiority were shown. Finally, we suggested the direction for the improvement of the energy harvesting block module.

Fluctuating wall pressures were measured using an array of 16 piezoelectric transducers beneath a turbulent boundary layer. The coating used in this experiment was an open-cell, urethane-type foam with a porosity of approximately 50 ppi. The ultimate objective of the coating is to provide a mechanical filter to reduce the wall pressure fluctuations. The boundary layer on the flat plate was measured by using a hot wire probe, and the CPM method was used to determine the skin friction coefficient. The wall pressure autospectra and streamwise wavenumber-frequency spectra were compared to assess the attenuation of the wall pressure field by the coating. The coating is shown to attenuate the convective wall pressure energy. However, the relatively rough surface of the coating in this investigation resulted in a higher mean wall shear stress, thicker boundary layer, and higher low-frequency wall pressure spectral levels compared to a smooth wall.

In this work, We, for the first time, present the effects of the thermal annealing of the W/SiO$_2$ multi-layer quarter wavelength reflectors on the resonant properties of the ZnO-based SMR devices. In order to improve the resonant properties of the SMR devices, we annealed thermally the reflectors formed on a silicon substrate using a RF magnetron sputtering technique. As a result, the resonant properties of the SMR devices were observed to strongly depend on the annealing conditions applied to the reflectors. The SMR devices with the reflectors annealed at 40$0^{\circ}C$/30min showed excellent resonance properties as compared to those with the reflectors non-annealed (as-deposited). The newly proposed simple thermal annealing process will be very useful to more effectively improve the resonant properties of the future SMR devices with W/SiO$_2$ multi-layer quarter wavelength reflectors.

This paper is concerned with design, manufacturing and performance test of LIPCA ( Lightweight Piezo- composite Curved Actuator) using a top carbon fiber composite layer with near -zero CTE(coefficient of thermal expansion), a middle PZT ceramic wafer and a bottom glass/epoxy layer with high CTE. The main point of this design is to replace the heavy metal layers of THUNDER by thigh tweight fiber reinforced plastic layers without losing capabilities to generate high force and large displacement. It is possible to save weight up to about 30% if we replace the metallic backing material by the light fiber composite layer. We can also have design flexibility by selecting the fiber direction and the size of prepreg layers. In addition to the lightweight advantage and design flexibility, the proposed device can be manufactured without adhesive layers when we use epoxy resin prepreg system. Glass/epoxy prepregs, a ceramic wafer with electrode surfaces, and a graphite/epoxy prepreg were simply stacked and cured at an elevated temperature (177 $^{circ}C$ after following an autoclave bagging process. It was found that the manufactured composite laminate device had a sufficient curvature after detached from a flat mold. The analysis method of the cure curvature of LIPCA using the classical lamination theory is presented. The predicted curvatures are fairly in agreement with the experimental ones. In order to investigate the merits of LIPCA, a performance test of both LIPCA and THUNDE$^{TM}$ were conducted under the same boundary conditions. From the experimental actuation tests, it was observed that the developed actuator could generate larger actuation displacement than THUNDERT$^{TM}$.

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate potential application of Lightweight Piezo-composite Actuator (LIPCA) to suppress vibrations of structures. The LIPCA, consisting of a piezoelectric layer, a carbon/epoxy layer and glass/epoxy layers, has advantages in terms of high performance, durability and reliability, compared to the bare piezoelectric ceramic (PZT) actuator. We performed two kinds of experiments on static actuation and active vibration suppression to investigate the actuation performances of the LIPCA and the bare PZT. We attached the actuator on one side and a strain gage on the other side of an aluminum beam. In the static actuation test, we evaluated the performance by comparing equivalent actuation moments of the LIPCA and the bare PZT due to the applied voltage. In the active vibration control test, control signals were generated to suppress the vibration of the beam by the PID control algorithm based on the measured strain signals. The performances were estimated based on settling times of the strain responses. It can be concluded that the LIPCA has better actuation performances than the bare PZT in active control of free vibration as well as static actuation.

In this study, the EMI (electro-mechanical impedance) of a small piezoelectric sensor was applied for measuring a unit weight and cementation (strength) of sand. Three different sizes of uncemented Nakdong River sand were filled loosely or densely into a compaction mold. A piezoelectric sensor with 20 mm in diameter was installed within sand for impedance measurement. A small Nakdong River sand was mixed with cement ratios of 4, 8 12, 16% and then compacted into a specimen with 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. The specimen consisted of 6 layers with a sensor at the third layer. The impedance signals for 3 days and unconfined compressive strength at the 3rd day were measured. As the unit weight of uncemented sand increased, the resonant frequency increased slightly from 102 to 105 kHz but a conductance at resonant frequency decreased. For cemented sands, as the curing time and cement ratio increased, the resonant frequency increased significantly from 129 to 266 kHz but the conductance at resonant frequency decreased. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cemented sands was between 289 and 1,390 kPa for different cement ratios. The relationship of UCS and resonant frequency linearly increased but one with a conductance at resonant frequency was in inverse proportion.
This paper describes anodic bonding characteristics of MLCA (Multi Layer Ceramic Actuator) to Si-wafer using evaporated Pyrex #7740 glass thin-films for MEMS applications. Pyrex #7740 glass thin-films with same properties were deposited on MLCA under optimum RF magneto conditions(Ar 100%, input power $1\;W/cm^2$). After annealing in $450^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr, the anodic bonding of MLCA and Si-wafer was successfully performed at 600 V, $400^{\circ}C$ in - 760 mmHg. Then, the MLCA/Si bonded interface and fabricated Si diaphragm deflection characteristics were analyzed through the actuation test. It is possible to control with accurate deflection of Si diaphragm according to its geometries and its maximum non-linearity is 0.05-0.08 %FS. Moreover, any damages or separation of MLCA/Si bonded interfaces do not occur during actuation test. Therefore, it is expected that anodic bonding technology of MLCA/Si wafers could be usefully applied for the fabrication process of high-performance piezoelectric MEMS devices.

Due to the diversified use of recent Piezoelectric Zirconate Titanate Composite Actuate. (PZTCA), various PZTCAs with the different ply orientation of the fiber layer have been applied. For this reason, the applicable bending moment equation is necessary even though the fiber layer ply orientation and the laminate configuration are changed. The aim of this research is to evaluate the relationship between the total effective moment $(M^E)$ and Bernoulli-Euler bending moment (M) when the ply orientations of UD CFRP are changed. In conclusions, firstly, as the performance test results by the CFRP ply orientation, the performance of [0] and [90] were stable. However, while the performance of [+45] was suddenly decreased after 5 hours. Secondly, the change of $(M^E)$ by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated. As the CFRP ply orientation was increased from [0] to [+60], the $(M^E)$ were gradually decreased. However, they became a little bit increased from [+60] to [90]. Finally, after the change of M by the CFRP ply orientation was evaluated, it was found that $M^E=2.2M$ was valid for just [0] and that there was a relationship between $M^E$ and M according to the ply orientation.
Along with the fast development of electronics, the demands of portable electronics and wireless sensors are growing rapidly. The need for self-powering materials capable of powering the electrical devices attached to them is increasing, The piezoelectric effect of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) can be used for this purpose. PVDF has a special crystal structure consisting of a ${\beta}$-phase that can produce piezoelectricity. In this paper, multilayer PVDF films were fabricated to increase the ${\beta}$-phase content. A solution of 10% concentration N;N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) in PVDF (PVDF/DMAc) was used to fabricate the films via spin coating technique with the following optimum process parameters: a spin rate of 850 rpm, spin time of 60 s, drying temperature of $60^{\circ}C$, and drying time of 30 min, Compared with single-layer PVDF films, the multilayer films exhibited higher ${\beta}$-phase content. The ${\beta}$-phase content of the films increased gradually with increasing number of layers until 4, Maximum ratio of ${\beta}$-phase content was 7.72.

Properties of 52/48 PZT films with various thicknesses for piezoelectric micro-electro mechanical systems (MEMS) devices fabricated by multi-coating method on $Pt(3500{\AA})/Ti(400{\AA})/SiO_2(3000{\AA})/Si$(525$\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates were investigated. PZT films were deposited by spin-coating process at 3500 rpm for 30 sec, followed by pyrolysis at 45$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 min producing the thickness of about 120nm. These processes were repeated 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 times in order to have various thicknesses, respectively. Finally, they were crystallized at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. All thick PZT films showed dense and homogeneous surface microstructures. Thick PZT films showed crystalline structures of random orientations with increasing thickness. Dielectric constants of thick PZT films were increased with increasing film thickness and reached 800 at 100kHz for 2.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ thick PZT film. $P_r\; and\; E_c$ of 2.3$\mu\textrm{m}$ thick PZT films were about 20$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 63kV/cm. Depth profile analysis by Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) of 4800 $\AA$ thick PZT film showed the formation of the perovskite phase on Pt layer by Pb diffusion behavior. It was considered that Pb-Pt intermediate layer promoted PZT (111) columnar structures.
