  • Lead-free ferroelectric ceramics are widely researched today for industrial applications as sensors, actuators and transducers. Since $Pb(Zr_aTi_{1-a})O_3$-(PZT) has high Curie temperature($T_C$), high piezoelectric properties near its morphotropic phase boundary(MPB) composition and small temperature dependence electrical behavior, it has been used to commercial materials for wide temperature range and different application fields. According to the tolerance factor concept, since the $Bi^{3+}$ cation with 12-fold coordinate has a smaller ionic radius than 12-fold coordinate $Pb^{2+}$, most bismuth based perovskites possess a smaller tolerance factor. Therefore, MPBs with a higher $T_C$ may be expected in $Bi(Me^{3+})O_3PbTiO_3$ solid solutions. As in lead based perovskite systems, it is clear that we need to explore more materials in simple or complex bismuth based MPB systems. The objective of this study is to investigate the $Bi(Ni_{1_a}X_a)O_3-PbTiO_3(X=Ti^{4+},\;Nb^{5+})$ perovskite solid-solution. For improving the electronic conduction problem, the magnesium and manganese modified system was also studied.

  • Solution-based, direct-write patterning by an automated, computer-controlled, inkjet technique is of particular interest in a wide variety of industrial fields. We report the construction of three-dimensional (3D), micro-patterned structures by polymer inkjet printing. A piezoelectric, drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printing system and a common polymer, PVA (poly(vinyl alcohol)), were explored for 3D construction. After a systematic preliminary study with different solvent systems, a mixture of water and DMSO was chosen as an appropriate solvent for PVA inks. The use of water as a single solvent resulted in frequent PVA clogging when the nozzles were undisturbed. Among the tested polymer ink compositions, the PVA inks in a water/DMSO mixture (4/1 v/v) with concentrations of 3 to 5 g/dL proved to be appropriate for piezoelectric DOD inkjet printing because they were well within the proper viscosity and surface tension range. When a dot was printed, the so-called 'coffee-ring effect' was significant, but its appearance was not prominent in line printing. The optimal polymer inkjet printing process was repeated slice after slice up to 200 times, which produced a well-defined, 3 D micro-patterned surface. The overall results implied that piezoelectric DOD polymer inkjet printing could be a powerful, solid-freeform, fabrication technology to create a controlled 3D architecture.

  • A higher order zig-zag shell theory is developed to refine accurately predict deformation and stress of smart shell structures under the mechanical, thermal, and electric loading. The displacement fields through the thickness are constructed by superimposing linear zig-zag field to the smooth globally cubic varying field. Smooth parabolic distribution through the thickness is assumed in the transverse deflection in order to consider transverse normal deformation. The mechanical, thermal, and electric loading is applied in the sinusoidal distribution function in the in-surface direction. Thermal and electric loading is given in the linear variation through the thickness. Especially, in electric loading case, voltage is only applied in piezo-layer. The layer-dependent degrees of freedom of displacement fields are expressed in terms of reference primary degrees of freedom by applying interface continuity conditions as well as bounding surface conditions of transverse shear stresses. In order to obtain accurate transverse shear and normal stresses, integration of equilibrium equation approach is used. The numerical examples of present theory demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed theory. The present theory is suitable for the predictions of behaviors of thick smart composite shell under mechanical, thermal, and electric loadings combined.

  • This paper addresses the problem of the modeling and vibration control of tapered rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force fields. For the rotating blade system, a thorough validation and assessment. of a number of non-classical features including the taper characteristics is accomplished. The damping capabilities are provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure and spread over the entire span of the beam. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect, the piezoactuators produce a localized strain field in response to a voltage and consequently, a change of the dynamic response characteristics is induced. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectrically induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and thebeneficial effects upon the closed-loop dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

  • Carriers moving in a semiconductor can impart gain or loss to an acousic wave traveling through Piezo-electric materials. In this paper, surface a coustic wave amplifiers, which employ the interaction between carriers drifting in a semiconduct or film and electic fields accompanying a Rayleigh wave propagating on a Piezoelectric substrate, are described. The effect of various electromagnetic boundary condition on th propagation of surface waves in Piezoelectrics is considered. An expression for the dependence of surface wave velocity on electic boundary conditions is derived. Calculations show that, for properly prepared material, significant amplification is expected up to the microwave frequencies. At high frequencies, gain is reduced because electro diffusion smooths out the electron bucning necessary for amplification.

  • Zinc oxide (ZnO) thin film was deposited on Si substrates using polycrystalline (poly) 3C-SiC buffer layer, in which the ZnO film was grown by sol-gel method. Physical characteristics of the grown ZnO film was investigated experimentally by means of SEM, XRD, FT-IR (Furier Transform-Infrared spectrum), and AFM. XRD pattern was proved that the grown ZnO film on 3C-SiC layers had highly (002) orientation with low FWHM (Full width of half maxium). These results showed that ZnO thin film grown on 3C-SiC buffer layers can be used for various piezoelectric fields and M/NEMS applications.

  • Recently, precision machining technology has been developed continuously in order to make high productivity and quality assurance of the precision parts of several industrial fields. Waviness may occur on the surface of the machined parts due to the table motion error and the dynamic cutting mechanism between the tool and the workpiece. The waviness may fall off the form accuracy of the precision machine parts. In the research, a micro cutting device with piezoelectric actuator has been developed to control precise depth of cut and compensate the waviness on the surface of the workpiece. Experiments have been carried out in the precision lathe. The characteristics of the surface profile and cause of the waviness profile have been analyzed and waviness profiles of some cause have been compared with those of experiments.

  • The demands for robotic and automatic system are continually increasing in manufacturing fields. There have been many studies to monitor and predict the system, but they have mainly focused upon measuring cutting force, and current of motor spindle, and upon using acoustic sensor, etc. In this study, time series sequence of cutting force was acquired by taking advantage of piezoelectric type tool dynamometer. Radial cutting force was obtained from it and was available for useful observation data. The parameter was estimated using PAA(parameter adaptation algorithm) from observation data. ARMA(auto regressive moving average) model was selected for system model and second order was decided according to parameter estimation. Uncorrelation test was also carried out to verify convergence of parameter.

  • Micro/meso cutting is getting more important in the fields of precision machining technology. A micro-turning lathe is one of parts to consist the Micro Factory. It accepts stepwise motion actuators that are used for feeding system instead of the conventional mechanism. It is consisted of two Piezoelectric ceramics; one is for feeding the slider, and the other is for clamping the slider in the guide way of the body. The linearity and positional accuracy of the actuators are good enough for high precision motion. The spindle unit is operated with DC motor on the top of the slider. The motion is communicated with miniaturized linear encoder attached on each side of axis. A mono crystal diamond tool is used for cutting tool. This micro-lathe has been made a machining experiment to see the characteristics of micro-machining.

  • Magnetostrictive materials are used low frequency sonar transmitter instead of piezoelectric materials. But it is difficult to analyze due to the nonlinearity and hysteresis of magnetostrictive materials. This paper deals with the program development for the finite element modeling of magnetostrictive tonpilz transducers and for analyzing their acoustic characteristics. To take into account the nonlinearity of magnetostrictive materials, the magnetic field calculation is separated form the displacement calculation, and a curve fitting is adopted for the nonlinear behavior of the magnetic and mechanical strain fields. At first, the magnetic field is obtained by using a commercial FEM software and the displacement of the transducer is calculated by plugging the obtained magnetic field into forcing term. To verity the accuracy of the developed program, a comparison is made with a commercial code, ATILA.
