This paper experimentally investigates the feasibility of harvesting vibration energy from whistles using piezoelectric materials. The end goal of this research is to generate sufficient power from the whistle to power a small radio transmitter to relay a basic signal - for example, a distress call. First, the paper discusses the current literature in energy harvesting from acoustic resonance. Next, the concept of an active whistle is presented. Next, results from energy harvesting experiments conducted on conventional and ultrasonic whistles undergoing human-actuation and actuation by a pressure-regulated air supply are presented. The maximum power density of the conventional whistle actuated by a human at 100 dB sound pressure level is $98.1{\mu}W/cm^3$.
This paper is concerned with development of a micro tensile testing machine for optical functional materials such as single or poly crystal silicon and nickel film. Two micro tensile testers have been developed for various types of materials and dimensions. One of the testers is actuated by a PZT and the other is actuated by a servo motor for a precise displacement control. The specifications of PZT actuated micro tensile tester developed are as follows: the volumetric size of tester is desktop sized of 710$\times$200$\times$270 $mm^3$; the minimum load capacity and the load resolution in the load cell of 1N are 3 mN and 0.1 mN respectively; the full stroke and the stoke resolution of piezoelectric actuator are 1 mm and 10nm respectively. A special automatic specimen installing equipment is applied in order to prevent unexpected deformation and misalignment of specimens during handling of specimen for testing.
Piezoelectric Fiber Composites with Interdigitated Electrodes (PFCIDE) were previously introduced as an alternative to monolithic wafers with conventional electrodes for applications of structural actuation. This paper is an investigation into the performance improvement of piezoelectric fiber composite actuators by changing the matrix material and actuator shape. This paper presents a modified micro-electromechanical model and numerical analyses of piezoelectric fiber/piezopolymer matrix composite actuator with interdigitated electrodes (PFPMIDE). Numerical analyses show that the shape of the graphite/epoxy composite plate with the PFPMIDE may be controlled by judicious choice of voltages, piezoelectric fiber angles, and elastic tailoring of the composite plate.
This paper attempts to compensate the nonlinearity between the input voltage and the output displacement of the piezoelectric stack in dynamic actuation by the following two ways. Firstly, the charge steering by circuit configuration reduces the hysteresis of piezoelectric actuator remarkably. However, it makes the ripple in positioning due to the phase lag and noise induced from the elements of the long closed loop. Secondly, the feedforward control by neural network compensates the hysteresis of the piezoelectric actuators effectively with the appropriate selection of the input variables for the training. The improvement of the dynamic performance of the piezoelectric actuators by the developed linearization technique is verified by experiments.
A new piezoceramic $d_{15}$ shear-induced torsion actuation mechanism representative benchmark is proposed and its experimentations and corresponding 3D finite element (FE) simulations are conducted. For this purpose, a long and thin smart sandwich cantilever beam is dimensioned and built so that it can be used later for either validating analytical Saint Venant-type solutions or for analyzing arm or blade-based smart structures and systems applications. The sandwich beam core is formed by two adjacent rows of 8 oppositely axially polarized d15 shear piezoceramic patches, and its faces are dimensionally identical and made of the same glass fiber reinforced polymer composite material. Quasi-static and static experimentations were made using a point laser sensor and a scanning laser vibrometer, while the 3D FE simulations were conducted using the commercial software $ABAQUS^{(R)}$. The measured transverse deflection by both sensors showed strong nonlinear and hysteretic (static only) variation with the actuation voltage, which cannot be caught by the linear 3D FE simulations.
In this study, a piezoelectric inkjet nozzle with a rectangular shaped channel has been developed, and the characteristics of droplet formation have been investigated according to the variation of pulse widths in bipolar waveform. The channel of the nozzle was fabricated transparently by a precision machining technique. A tantalum membrane which was attached to a piezoelectric material covers the channel. By applying two types of bipolar waveforms to the piezoelectric actuators, droplet formation through the nozzle was monitored by a CCD camera. For the variety of the first and second pulse widths in the bipolar waveforms, the regimes of single and double droplet formations are presented. The change of droplet velocity which depends on the pulse width and the type of waveform is also discussed.
New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.
Many methodologies have been explored to reduce helicopter vibration. Trailing edge flaps for such a purpose have been studied for the past twenty years. A brief overview of the introduction of active vibration controls using trailing edge flaps and smart actuators is presented in series. This is the fourth article, in which a piezoelectric resonant actuation system with a buckling-beam motion amplifier for active trailing edge flaps is presented.
This paper presents a proof-concept investigation on the active vibration control of two hybrid smart structures (HSSs). The first one is consisting of a piezoelectric film (PF) actuator and an electro-rheological fluid(ERF) actuator, and the other is featured by a piezoceramic (PZT) actuator and a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator. For the PF/ERF hybrid smart structure, both the increment of the damping ratios and the suppression of the tip deflections are evaluated in order to demonstrate control effectiveness of the PF actuator and ERF actuator and the hybrid actuation. For the PZT/SMA hybrid smart structure, the PZT actuator takes account of the high frequency excitation, while the SMA actuator exerts large vibration control force. The experimental results exhibit superior abilities of the hybrid actuation systems to tailor elastodynamic responses of the HSS rather than a single class of actuation system alone.
