The piezoelectric single crystals used in piezoelectric transformers have a problem that power transfer capacity is comparatively low due to their high input impedance. In this study, we suggest a method to improve the power transfer capacity by reducing the high input impedance of the piezoelectric single crystal vibrator by connecting a capacitance increasing circuit to the electrical terminals of the piezoelectric single crystal vibrator where the circuit is a GIC (Generalized Impedance Converter) circuit using operational amplifiers. The result of measuring driving characteristics after applying the designed capacitance increasing circuit to the $128^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut $LiNbO_3$ crystal vibrator confirmed that the input impedance decreased by 25 %, electromechanical coupling factor increased by 30 %, and the power transfer capacity increased by about 17 to 30 times in voltage conversion characteristics.
Piezoelectric (PZ) crystal biosensor system was used to detect the DNA of food pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes-specific DNA was multiplied via the polymerase chain reaction using LM1 oligonucleotide (5'-TTACGAATTAAAAAGGAGCG-3') and LM2 oligonucleotide (5'-TTAAATCAGCAGGGGTCTTT-3') as primers. DNA fragment of 161 bp, which was specific only for L. monocytogenes, was observed. To obtain a large amount of single-stranded DNA containing an SH group used for coupling to the gold electrode chemisorptively, LM1 oligonucleotide containing a mercaptohexyl group was utilized as a single strand PCR primer. The PCR product was immobilized onto the gold electrode of PZ crystal, and hybridization was monitored in quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system by injecting the antisense single-stranded DNA of 161 nucleotides obtained via the single strand PCR using the unmodified LM2 primer. Approximately 70 Hz of frequency drop was observed in the QCM system in the case of two consecutive injections of $5{\mu}g$ of the antisense single-stranded DNA.

The development of telecommunication and information technology requires to develop new piezoelectric materials with small size, low impedance, wide pass band width and high thermal stability of frequency. Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14) single crystal has been researched substitute of quartz and LiNbO3 for the applications of SAW filter, BAW filter and resonator. Its single crystal growth has been carried out by Czochralski Method. So, in order to get single crystal with higher quality, in this study, lnagasite (La3Ga5SiO14) single crystal was grown by using Floating Zone (FZ) method and characterized. For the growth of langasite single crystals, the langasite powder was synthesized at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs and the feed rod was sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs. The growing rate was 1.5mm/h and the rotation speed was 15 rpm for an upper rotation and 13 rpm for a lower rotation. In order to prevent the evaporation of gallium oxide, Ar and O2 gas mixture was flowed. The growth direction was analyzed by Laue back-scattered analysis. The composition of grown crystal was analyzed suing XRD and WDS. The electrical properties of grown crystal at various frequencies and temperature were discussed.
In order to investigate the effect of thickness on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of (001) PMN-29PT single crystals, three different types of PMN-29PT samples were prepared using the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method: high density crystal [99%], low density crystal [95%], and high density crystal doped with Mn [98.5%]. When their thickness decreased from 0.5 mm to 0.05 mm, their dielectric constant ($K_3{^T}$), piezoelectric constants ($d_{33}$ and $g_{33}$), and electromechanical coupling factor ($k_t$) decreased continuously. However, their dielectric loss (tan ${\delta}$) increased. The addition of Mn to PMN-PT induced an internal bias electric field ($E_I$), increased the coercive electric field ($E_C$), and prevented local depoling. Therefore, Mn-doped PMN-PT crystals show high stability as well as high performance, even in the form of very thin plates (< 0.2 mm), and thus are suitable for application to high frequency composites, medical ultrasound probes, non-destructive testing devices (NDT), and flexible devices.

This work investigated the electromechanical performance of a cantilevered vibration energy harvester incorporating the single crystal PMN-PZT, manufactured with the most recent technology of solid-state single crystal growth. Single crystal PMN-PZTs with two different crystallographic axes such as [011] and [001] were considered. For the [011] orientation, because material properties such as the stiffness, piezoelectric strain coefficients are not the same in the directions normal to the crystallographic axis, the effects of the transversely anisotropy on the magnitude and frequency bandwidth of output power were also analyzed.
Three types of piezoelectric single crystals [PMN-PT (Generation I $[Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3]$), PMN-PZT (Generation II $[Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3]$), PMN-PZT-Mn (Generation III)] were grown by the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method, and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were measured and compared. Compared to (001) PMN-PT and PMN-PZT single crystals, the (001) PMN-PZT-Mn single crystals exhibited a higher transition temperature between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases ($T_{RT}=144^{\circ}C$), as well as a higher coercive electric field ($E_C=6.3kV/cm$) and internal bias field ($E_I=1.6kV/cm$). The (011) PMN-PZT-Mn single crystals showed the highest coercive electric field ($E_C=7.0kV/cm$), and the highest stability of $E_C$ and $E_I$ during 60 cycles of polarization measurement. These results demonstrate that both Mn doping (for higher electromechanical quality factor ($Q_m$)) and a (011) crystallographic orientation (for higher coercive electric field and stability) are necessary for high power transducer applications of these piezoelectric single crystals. Specifically, the (011) PMN-PZT-Mn single crystal (Gen. III) had the highest potential for application in the fields of SONAR transducers, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), ultrasonic motors, and others.

Electrical poling is a crucial step to convert ferroelectrics to piezoelectrics. Nevertheless, no systematic investigation on the effect of poling has been reported. Given that the poling involves an alignment of spontaneous polarization, the condition for poling should be different when a material has an internal bias field that influences the domain stability. Here, we present the effect of poling profile on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties in Mn-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-29 mol%PbTiO3 single crystal with an internal bias field. We showed that both the dielectric permittivity and the piezoelectric coefficient were further enhanced when the poling procedure ends with a field application along the opposite direction to the internal bias field. We expect that the current finding would give a clue to understanding the true mechanism for the electrical poling.
In this study, LIPCA-S2 actuator with a piezoelectric single crystal layer and a carbon/epoxy layer was designed and evaluated to increase actuation performance of piezo-composite unimorph actuator. A curvature change model generated by the induced strain of a piezoelectric layer was used to predict the tip displacement of the piezo-composite unimorph cantilever. However, we found that there was big difference between the predicted and the measured tip displacement of LIPCA-S2 cantilever actuator when we used the previous linear prediction model. A new prediction model considering the change of piezoelectric strain coefficient and elastic modulus for the compression stress variation of the PMN-29PT single crystal layer was used and it was found that the difference between the predicted and the measured tip displacement reduced considerably.

The piezoelectric properties of tetragonal 0.88Pb$(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.12PbTiO_3$ single crystals are characterized along the <111> direction, which composed the engineering domain configuration in the tetragonal phase. The <111>-oriented crystal possessed smaller $d_{33}$ values compared to the crystal along the <001> spontaneous polarization direction. Based on phenomenological theory, it is shown that the engineering domain configuration does not enhance the piezoelectric constant in tetragonal 0.88Pb$(Zn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3)O_3-0.12PbTiO_3$ single crystals. In addition, the electrostrictive coefficients of $Q_{12}=-0.03706m^4/C^2,\;Q_{11}=0.10765m^4/C^2,\;and\;Q_{44}=0.02020m^4/C^2$ of tetragonal 0.88PZN-0.12PT single crystals were calculated.
Rhombohedral $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals are fabricated using the cost-effective solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method; their dielectric and piezoelectric properties are also characterized. Measurements show that (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals have an electromechanical coupling factor ($k_{33}$) higher than 0.85, piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$) of about 950 [pC/N], and piezoelectric voltage constant ($g_{33}$) higher than 40 [${\times}10^{-3}Vm/N$]. Especially the $d_{33}$ of (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals was by about six times higher than that of their ceramics. Because their electromechanical coupling factor ($k_{33}$) and piezoelectric voltage constant ($d_{33}$, $g_{33}$) are higher than those of soft PZT ceramics, it is expected that rhombohedral (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals can be used as "lead-free" piezoelectric materials in many piezoelectric applications such as actuator, sensor, and transducer.
