Recently, it is a trend to construct high rise buildings or wide-span bridges by using High Strength Concrete (HSC). But the HSC is going to be susceptible to brittle fractures if it has not taken enough curing process. Therefore, this study proposes a real-time online monitoring technology using piezoelectric sensors for more reliable and economical monitoring of the curing process of the HSC.

In People usually think that smart materials and smart structures have not been developed until recent years. But those kinds of sensors have already been used for sensing damage in a variety of materials and structures. Two typical examples are piezoelectric materials (e.g., PZT) and electric strain gauges. Load cell is an example that utilizes the piezoelectric property to measure the change in physical quantities occurred by applied loads, while strain gauges are used to measure the deformation of compressive and tension members. The feasibility of using smart materials is realized for a monitoring technology when those sensors are used to monitor damages at inside or outsider of the structures. In this study, a fundamental study on the development of self diagnostic smart concrete using PZT, and unsaturated polyester electric resistance sensor.

In this paper, a remote temperature sensor based on surface acoustic wave is introduced and the issues on design, manufacturing, and test of the sensor are addressed. SAW sensors having single and double electrode are prepared on the 128$^{\circ}$ YX-LiNbO$_3$ Substrate. The frequency responses of SAW sensors on the temperature change are compared. To measure the change of center frequency, two center frequencies on the 3dB and 20dB are measured and compared. Since the center frequency on the temperature change from -30$^{\circ}C$ to 80$^{\circ}C$ is linearly changed, the SAW sensor is applicable to the temperature sensor.

Low-velocity impact damage is a major concern in the design of structures made of composite materials, because impact damage is hidden inside and cannot be detected by visual inspection. The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to detect variations in structural and material properties for structural health monitoring. In this paper, the PVDF and PZT sensors were used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel to illustrate this potential benefit. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The wavelet transform(WT) is used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. Test results show that the particular waveform of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. And it is found that both PZT and PVDF sensors can be used to detect the impact damage.

This study deals with the active vibration control system for an all-clamped rectangular plate with piezoceramic actuators and sensors. A line nonent algorithm (LMA) with the distributed modal sensitivity(DMS) is proposed to reduce the structural vibrations effectively and to select the optimal locations and the optimal directions (skewed angles) of uniform piezoelectric actuators or sensors. Experimental results show that eachmode can attenuated byabout 10 .approx. 13 dB in case a piezoelectric actuator generate the psuedo-random disturbances that excite the plate modes.

This paper proposes an identification method for a thin plate where multiple actuators and sensors are bonded. Since a thin plate has small damping ratios of all modes, each mode can be identified seperately with a bandpass filter for each modal signal. With the bandpass filter and the characteristics of the plate, the Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) model of the plate can be converted to several Multi-Input Single-Output(MISO) models of second order linear difference equations of the modes. Parameters for each mode are obtained by using the Least Square method. Form there MISO models, the MIMO model is obtained in the form of the state space. Experiments were performed for an all-clamped plate with two pairs of piezoelectric actuators and sensors. The outputs of the identified model and the experimental data match well.

In this work, we discuss simulation of surface acoustic wave device using Comsol Multiphysics. The structure SAW device based on piezoelectric thin film aluminum-nitride (AlN) on silicon was simulated. Some parameters of SAW device such as surface velocity, displacement of piezoelectric thin film were evaluated by software. Many modes and shapes of wave are also discussed in this paper. For evaluation physical parameters of AlN piezoelectric layer, the SAW resonator was modeled and simulation results were also compared with experiment results. we simulated arid evaluated the surface Rayleigh wave of AlN thin film on silicon substrate. Results simulation and experiment showed the surface velocity of AlN thin film was about 5200 m/s and shape of surface wave was also displayed. This paper has also proposed as method to study SAW characteristic of piezoelectric thin film and found out measurement values accurately of film such as stiffness matrix, piezoelectric matrix. These values are very important in calculation and design SAW device or MEMS device based on AlN piezoelectric layer.
This paper presents a structural health monitoring method using piezoelectric paint sensor designed for an impact sensor. The piezoelectric paint sensor can be flexibly deposited onto most structural surfaces in a thin form of the paint, and measure impact signals without any external device such as a power amplifier. In this study, a composite plate having four zones coated with piezoelectric paint was used for impact monitoring test. The sensitivity of the piezoelectric paint sensor was obtained by measuring the output voltages against the impact force. In addition to the sensitivity measurement, the impact position has been also estimated by comparing the output signals of the paint sensors when the impact occurs on the specimen.

Currently, piezoelectric ceramics are being applied in various fields, such as ultrasonic sensors, vibration devices, sound filters, and various energy conversion devices. Flexible piezoelectric ceramics are widely studied in an effort to mitigate the disadvantages of their brittle and inductile properties. Structural damage to piezoelectric fibers is much less than that to thin films when piezoelectric fibers are twisted or bent. Therefore, stretchable devices can be fabricated if piezoelectric fibers are obtained using an elongated substrate. In this study, sintering processes of PZT ($Pb(Zr_{0.53}Ti_{0.47})O_3$) fibers prepared by electrospinning were optimized through the TGA and XRD analyses. The crystal structure and microstructure of the piezoelectric fibers were investigated by XRD, FE-SEM and TEM.
Active control of solar panels with honeycomb core and carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) facesheets for smart structures using piezoelectric patch sensor and actuator to reduce the amplitude of vibration is a lack of the previous study and it is the novelty of this research. Of active control elements are piezoelectric patches which act as sensors and actuators in many systems. Their low power consumption is worth mentioning. Thus, deriving a simple and efficient model of piezoelectric patch's elastic, electrical, and elastoelectric properties would be of much significance. In the present study, first, to reduce vibrations in composite plates reinforced by carbon nanotubes, motion equations were obtained by the extended rule of mixture. Second, to simulate the equations of the system, up to 36 mode shape vectors were considered so that the stress strain behavior of the panel and extent of displacement are thoroughly evaluated. Then, to have a more acceptable analysis, the effects of external disturbances (Aerodynamic forces) and lumped mass are investigated on the stability of the system. Finally, elastoelectric effects are examined in piezoelectric patches. The results of the present research can be used for micro-vibration suppression in satellites such as solar panels, space telescopes, and interferometers and also to optimize active control panel for various applications.
