Several methods are available for the fabrication of electrode pattern for the plasma display panel(PDP) including screen printing and photolithographic method. Piezo type ink-jet printing method is considered to the method of choice for electrode patterning in manufacturing of PDP. Both silver ink and absorbent layer paste formulation were developed for ink-jet printing of electrode pattern. The ink-jet printing of silver electrode with preformed absorbent layer was especially suitable for the patterning of address electrode for high resolution PDP.
Recently, studies of 3D printing methods have been working in various applications. For example, the powder base method laminates the prints by using a binding or laser sintering method. However, the draw back of this method is that the post process is time consuming and does not allow for parts to be rapidly manufactured. The binding method requires the post process while the time required for the post process is longer than the manufacturing time. This paper proposes a UV curing binding method with an integrated piezo printing head system. The optimization of an arbitrary waveform generation for the control of a UV curable resin droplet was researched, in addition to developed optimized UV curing processes in multi nozzle ink jet heads.
As an effort to reduce cost and lead-time and to increase flexibility and responsiveness, manufacturers are using digital printing in numerous process steps. Typically, these processes require the precise dispensing of various fluids. Piezo ink jet printheads are proving to be reliable tools for depositing active materials such as light emitting polymers (LEP) for mobile phone displays and color filter inks for liquid crystal displays. Ink jets are also being used to provide uniform coatings of polyimide alignment layers and spacers for LCDs. Success with legend printing on PCBs using ink jets has encouraged the design of equipment for directly printing both etch resist and solder mask for PCBs. Development of printers for passive components such as capacitors and resistors is underway. This paper will present the attributes of an ink jet printhead designed to a precision deposition tool and discuss how it is being used to digitally print electronic and flat panel display components. Status of commercialization of digital printing will be discussed along with issues to be resolved before wide adoption takes place.
For the current display process, the innovative micro pattern fabrication process using semiconductor process should be developed, which requires the expensive equipment, the limited process environment and the expensive optic-sensitive material. The effort of process innovation during past several years ends up the limit of cost reduction. The existing ink jet technologies such as a thermal bubble ink jet printing and a piezo ink jet printing are required to shorten the nozzle diameter in order to apply to the micro pattern fabrication. In this paper, as one way to cope these problems the micro pattern equipment based on the electrostatic ink jet has been developed and carried out some experiments.
Over the past decade, the feasibility of using ink-jet printing for the decoration of porcelain tiles has been explored, and significant advances have been made regarding the technologies underlying printing system and materials. An ink-jet printing system for porcelain tiles has many advantages compared with a conventional printing system, including the following: (1) it is a digital process; (2) it uses non-contact printing; (3) it allows random image generation; (4) it is a highly efficient process (reduced production cost); (5) it offers massive and continuous production; and (6) it uses inorganic pigment colorants. For these reasons, ink-jet printing systems for porcelain tiles have been commercialized and are at present rapidly spreading toceramics-leading countries such as Spain, Italy, China and Japan. We also developed a proprietary system involving a piezo-electric drop-on-demand method and an ink-circulation step. The resolution of this system is greater than 360 dpi after a heat treatment and the maximum printable width is 600 mm, even when setting the printing head unit with four digital colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black). In addition, we systematically developed ceramic colorant-containing inks and tile-printing technology applicable to our ink-jet printing system.
Recently, 3D printing technology is a hot issue in various industrial fields. According to the user's application, it allows for the free form fabrication method to be utilized in a wide range. The powder based fusion technique is one of the 3D printing methods. When using this method it is possible to apply the various binder jetting techniques such as piezo, thermal bubble jet, dispenser and so on. In this paper, a multi thermal bubble ink jet was integrated for jetting of powder binding material and developing a power fused 3D printing system. For high quality 3D printing parts, it needs an analysis and evaluation of the behavior of the thermal bubble ink jet head. In the experiment, a correlation between jetting binder quantity and layer thickness of powder was investigated, and a 3D part model was fabricated, which was used by measuring the scale factor.

Ink jet printheads are now widely used in manufacturing processes that require precise dispensing of materials. Today, Dimatix manufactures a variety of drop-on-demand ink jet printheads for the industrial printing market, but emerging opportunities present fresh challenges to our technology. In response to requirements for digitally printing on flexible substrates and dispensing novel electronic fluids, we are developing next generation jetting technology based on our three-dimensional silicon MEMS technology with a piezo-driven pumping chamber integrated into the chip structure. This presentation will address the functional and physical design features and properties of Dimatix's MEMS process, its characteristics, reliability and usability. Examples of opportunities and applications for digitally printing electronic fluids on flexible substrates with MEMS-based ink jet technology will be presented.

By ink-jet printing method, organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) having soluble 6,13-bis (triisopropylsilylethynyl) pentacene (TIPS pentacene) as an active material were fabricated. The TIPS pentacene solution was made with chlorobenzene and anisole. The solutions were printed on poly (4-vinylphenol) (PVP) dielectric layers and source/drain electrodes by piezo-type heads for bottom contact OTFTs. The dielectric layers had untreated or HMDS-treated conditions. The chlorobenzene device showed the highest field effect mobility of $0.016\;cm^2/Vs$ and the anisole HMDS-treated device shows the highest $I_{on}/I_{off}$ ratio of $10^5$.
Ink-jetting characteristics of pulse width and pulse amplitude for a piezoelectric ink jet printer driver have been mapped with various polymer EL ink. In this study, the jetting characteristics have been classified into 4 regime; no Jetting, unstable jetting, stable jetting, and spraying, and the importance of fluid viscosity on the scope of the stable jetting regime has been emphasized. The relation between jetting speed and the width and amplitude of driving signal has also been investigated and the effect of the speed on the jetting characteristics has been discussed.
This paper presents numerical and theoretical studies of acoustic wave interactions in slightly compressible liquids within piezoelectrically driven inkjet print heads. The interconnected flow channels may cause jet crosstalk, resulting in poor printing quality. It should be reduced by modifying the channel structure with the acoustic wave interactions considered. Compressible gas flow driven by the sudden movement of a top wall in the channel is calculated using Flow3D and is validated with the narrow gap theory. Limited compressibility model of the Flow3D is employed to calculate pressure waves of slightly compressible ink flow. It is found that reducing restrictor width can damp out the jet crosstalk by inhibiting the pressure wave propagation. The degree of crosstalk has been quantified using the maximum values of cross-correlations between neighboring channels and a critical channel dimension for acceptable crosstalk has been proposed. This finding is verified by drop visualization experiments using silicon-micromachined piezo inkjet print heads that are fabricated by our group.
