  • Having very small linear displacement, piezoelectric actuators have been restricted in robotic application as positioning devices. In this paper, a mechanical amplifier was developed to enhance the displacement of piezoelectric actuator and the corresponding driving circuit was designed. This equipment was integrated as a robotic wrist having 2 D.O.F micropositioning capability. Each joint was analysed in mechanical and dynamic view points. Experimental result showed that this device has Some hysteresis but could be used as vibratory robotic wrist with relatively high frequency. For more fine positioning control, a closed loop approach must be taken into account.

  • The benefits of the pneumatic valve with piezoelectric element are faster response times, low energy consumption, and the ability to be used in hazardous environments and field bus systems. In this paper, PZT actuator, 2 and 3 stages pneumatic valve were designed and manufactured. Also. characteristics of the pneumatic valve with piezoelectric element were tested with a testing system. It is confirmed that the PZT actuator is useful one for controlling the direction of pilot valve.

  • For reduction of CO, NOx and soot emission emitted by diesel diffusion combustion, the authors focused on injection actuator to improve fuel availability inside combustion chamber. In this study, it was investigated the internal dynamic characteristics of two-stage injection with diesel injectors with different driving type for the common rail direct injection by using the AMESim simulation code. The analysis parameter defined such as fuel pressure, injection hole's diameter and driven voltage. As the results, it was shown that the piezo-driven injector had a faster response and had better control capability than the solenoid-driven injector. It was found the piezo-driven injector can be utilized effectively as multiple injector than solenoid-driven injector.

  • A numerical method for actuating performance evaluation of LIPCA proposed using a finite element method. Fully coupled formulations for piezo-electric materials were introduced and 3-dimensional eight-node incompatible element was used. After verifying the developed code with typical examples, the center deflections of LIPCA were calculated and compared with the experimental result, which were in fairly agreement.

  • The objective of this study is to increase lift and decrease drag of an airfoil by delaying flow separation with piezo-ceramic actuators. The airfoil used is NACA 0012 and the chord length is 30cm. An experiment is performed at the freestream velocity of 15m/s at which the Reynolds number is $3{\times}10^5$. Seven rectangular actuators are attached to the airfoil surface and move up and down based on the electric signal. At the attack angle of $16^{\circ}$, the separation point is delayed downstream due to momentum addition induced by the movement of the actuators. Drag and lift are measured using an in-house 2-dimensional load cell and the surface pressures are also measured. Lift is increased by 10%, drag is reduced by 50%, and the efficiency is increased to 170%. The flow fields with and without control are visualized using the smoke-wire and tuft techniques.

  • The problem considered in this paper is about the collocation of sensor and actuator for the active control of sound and vibration. It is well-known that a point collocated sensor-actuator pair offers an unconditional stability with very high performance when it is used with a direct velocity feedback (DVFB) control, because the pair has strictly positive real (SPR) property. In order to utilize this SPR characteristics, a matched piezoelectric sensor and actuator pair is considered. but this pair suffers from the in-plane motion coupling problem with the out-of-plane motion due to the piezo sensor and actuator interaction. This coupling phnomenon limits the stability and performance of the matched pair with DVFBcontrol. As a new alternative, a point sensor and distributed piezoelectric actuator pair is also considered, which provides SPR property in all frequency range when the pair is implemented on a clamped-clapmed beam. The use of this sensor-actuator pair is highly expected for the applications to more practical active control of sound and vibration systems with the DVFB control strategy.

  • This paper represents a piezoelectric ultrasonic linear actuator with flexural vibration mode. The actuator is composed of two piezo ceramics, the elastic body, and the connecting tip. It is driven by the frictional force between the connecting tip and the linear motion guide. Unimorph actuators have flexural vibration. Its middle point is fixed so that suitable to the flexural vibration of $3/2\lambda$. These vibrations contribute to elliptical motion by mixed mode between longitudinal and transverse mode. It was generated when the ultrasonic electrical signals with 90 degree phase difference are applied to two ceramics. A linear movement can be easily obtained using the elliptical motion. The ATILA, FEM simulator has been used to design actuator and verify the kinetic and dynamic analysis. We used the ceramics of $20\times10\times1$ mm size and confirmed the flexural vibration of the $3/2\lambda$ at the 79 kHz through the scanning of 3D-vibrometer. The maximum velocity of actuator was 221 mm/sec and the thrust force of actuator was 2.7 N in 200Vp-p of additional voltage.

  • Acoustic response control of a comer-pinned plate using piezoelectric wafers was studied, both theoretically and experimentally. Three different sizes of aluminum alloy plates were used and available ball joints were employed to hold the plate at the four comers. The plate with the largest aspect ratio showed the largest and most clear responses to the acoustic excitation in the range of frequencies (0~200Hz), and sound pressure levels (80~100dB) as predicted. The reduction of the acoustic response of the plate by piezoelectric actuator was very significant, more than expected, but abatement of the sound transmission through the plate was only slightly altered by the piezoelectric actuator. This work is an original work extending earlier work with doors excited by acoustic fields. The important difference is the used of ball joints to simulate the joints.

  • In this paper, high-pressure injection characteristic of servo hydraulic injector as the key component of diesel CRDi system, which is driven by solenoid and piezo-actuator were examined by experimental analysis. High-pressure injection characteristic of standard diesel fuel injected at high pressure up to 160 MPa was investigated at high-pressure chamber by using a high-speed camera for spray visualization and quantitative analysis. By this study, we found that the piezo-driven injector has better performances in controlling the fuel injection with the high pressure, including fuel quantity, spray penetration length and spray velocity, than that of a solenoid-driven injector. In particular, the needle response time for start of injection in piezo-driven injector was faster of about $125{\mu}s$ than that of solenoid-driven injector. Consequently, it is known that the piezo-driven injector has more degrees of freedom in controlling the fuel injection with the high pressure than solenoid-driven injector.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication and characteristics of a piezoelectric valve using MCA(Multilayer ceramic actuator). The MCA valve, which has the buckling effect, consists of three separate structures; MCA, a valve actuator die and an a seat die. The design of the actuator die was done by FEM modeling and displacement measurement, respectively. The valve seat die with 6 trenches was made, and the actuator die, which is driven to MCA under optimized conditions, was also fabricated. After Si-wafer direct bonding between the seat die and the actuator die, MCA was also anodic bonded to the seat/actuator die structure. PDMS sealing pad was fabricated to minimize a leak-rate. It was also bonded to seat die and SUS package. The MCA valve shows a flow rate of 9.13 sccm at a supplied voltage of 100 V with a 50 % duty cycle, maximum non-linearity was 2.24 % FS and leak rate was $3.03{\times}10^{-8}pa$. $m^3/cm^2$.
