The dried needles (1.5 kg) of Picea abies Karsten were ground, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$ (7:3, v/v), concentrated, and fractionated with a series of n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate and water on a separatory funnel. Each fraction was freeze dried, then a portion of ethyl acetate soluble powder was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-n-hexane mixture as eluents. The isolated compounds were identified by cellulose TLC, $^1H$-, $^{13}C$-NMR, FAB and EI-MS. (+)-catechin (compound I), (-)-epicatechin (compound II), kaempferol-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (compound III), 4-hydroxyacetophenone (compound IV) were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction and (+)-catechin (compound I), protocatechuic acid (compound V) were isolated from the $H_2O$ soluble fraction of P. abies needle. The antioxidative activities of each fraction and the isolated compounds were tested by DPPH radical scavenging method, and EtOAc soluble fraction, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin showed similar values to ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and BHT as controls.
The SLODSVAT consists of interrelated submodels that simulate : the transfer of radiation, water vapour, sensible heat, carbon dioxide and momentum in two canopy layers determined by environmental conditions and ecophysiological properties of the vegetation ; uptake and storage of water in the "root-stem-leaf" system of plants ; interception of rainfall by the canopy layers and infiltration and storage of rain water in the four soil layers. A comparison of the results of modeling experiments and field micro-climatic observations in a spruce forest(Picea abies [L].Karst) in the Soiling hills(Germany) shows, that the SLODSVAT can describe and simulate the short-term(diurnal) as well as the long-term(seasonal) variability of water vapour and sensible heat fluxes adequately to natural processes under different environmental conditions. It proves that it is possible to estimate and predict the transpiration and evapotranspiration rates for spruce forest ecosystems on the patch and landscape scales for one vegetation period, if certain meteorological, botanical and hydrological information for the structure of the atmospheric boundary layer, the canopy and the soil are available.
The effect of heat treatment on the dynamic viscoelasticity of the woods of Picea sitchensis and Paulownia coreana which have been for musical instruments was investigated. The treatment was made in a temperature range of 60-180$^{\circ}C$ for periods of 3 hours to 24 hours. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Moisture absorption decreased with increasing temperature. Dynamic Young's modulus decreased with increasing temperature and hours. Dynamic viscoelasticity decreased with increasing moisture content, but internal friction increased with increasing amount of moisture content.
The anatomical structure of fusiform ray was examined by scanning electron microscopy (and microscopic images were analysed by image analyser) to explain the differences in radial fluid uptake between the extremes in the radial treatment data, i.e. between the selected trees of QCI (Queen Charlotte Islands in Rhondda, South Wales) and SO (South Oregon in Dalby, North-East England) planted in the UK. The ray structure of these two seed origins was examined microscopically and different patterns of ray composition were observed. The most important anatomical features influencing radial permeability were the nature of fusiform ray, and the condition of the resin canals, epithelial cells and intercellular spaces in particular.
In order to investigate the basic vegetation information for the efficient management of the Sorbus commixta habitat in Korea, 31 plots in Mt. Chiri area were selected of which vegetation types were classified in phytosociological method and ecological characteristics were identified. As a result, the habitat was classified as S. commixta community group which was then subdivided to Prunus padus group and Picea jezoensis group. Prunus padus group was classified in Ainsliaea acerifolia subgroup and Magnolia sieboldii subgroup, while the Picea jezoensis group was classified in Rhododendron mucronulatum subgroup and Echinopanax horridum subgroup. Thus, the forest vegetation of S. commixta was classified in 1 community, 2 groups and 4 subgroups, and found to have 4 vegetation units in total.
This study was conducted to elucidate the mid-growth of Norway spruce at the age of 27 and select the superior provenances in Korea. Growth performance of twenty-four provenances from Germany and Rumania were investigated in four plantations. Significant differences were found in growth (height, DBH, volume) with plantations. Maximum growth were detected on plantation Chuncheon which located in most northern area, and minimum growth were detected on plantation Wanju located in most southern area. The rank of height in provenances has fluctuated, but superior/inferior groups have been almost fixed. 840-23, 840-10, 840-19 in Germany, G1-64-57, G1-64-54 in Rumania proved excellent provenances. Height in early stage positively correlated with that in late stage. The growth was positively correlated with latitude and altitude of plantations, but negatively correlated with temperature.

This study was conducted to evaluate the allelopathic effect against the regeneration of the seedling and to identify the presence of allelochemicals in Picea jezoensis natural population in Jirisan. Water-soluble extracts from leaves of different competition plants were collected to test their effects on seed germination and seedling growth of P. jezoensis. Phenolic compounds from leaves were quantified using GC/MS. The seed germination rate and seedling growth of P. jezoensis was reduced by extracts of all competition plants leaves. Monoterpenoids compound, which are generally well known in the allelochemicals has been detected in the leaf extracts. In conclusion, allelopathic chemicals of competition vegetation in P. jezoensis natural population could inhibit the seed germination and seedling growth of P. jezoensis, that is considered as a result of the lower seedling establishment.
Picea jezoensis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Carriere is one of the major and widespread components of the cold-temperate and boreal forests in Russian Far East, northeast China, Korea, and Japan. However, it is restricted to a highly fragmented range in South Korea with small populations. Mean expected heterozygosity $(H_e)$ based on 22 loci in 11 isozyme systems was 0.077 for four sampled populations that covered the whole distribution range of P. jezoensis in South Korea. This value is within the range reported for conifers, but it is very low compared to that of other spruce species as well as that of P. jezoensis populations in Russian Far East. Most populations had a slight excess of heterozygotes and the Wright's $F_{IS}$ (-0.019) was comparable to that previously reported for other spruce species. In all of the four populations, the Wilcoxon sign-rank test indicated no greater heterozygosity than that expected for populations at mutation-drift equilibrium, suggesting that the populations have not been bottlenecked recently. Despite a fragmented range and isolated populations, population differentiation was not high $(F_{ST}=0.047)$ and the number of migrants per generation was 5.09. Nei's genetic distances were also small $({\bar{D}}=0.005)$ but strongly related to geographic distances between populations, suggesting an Isolation by Distance. The northernmost isolate, Mt. Gyebang population was genetically distinct from the other three populations. Implications for the conservation of genetic variation of P. jezoensis in South Korea were discussed.
This study was conducted to investigate the population structure and dynamics of the Picea jezoensis stands which are located in Mt. Gyebangsan and surveyed from March to October 2012. Results showed that the diameter class distribution of P. jezoensis presented a reverse J-shaped distribution pattern with 32 trees less than 10 cm DBH, 20 trees in 10~30 cm DBH, and 11 trees more than 30 cm DBH. It showed seedlings and saplings of P. jezoensis seem to prefer areas with more sun light or with open upper layer. It was also observed that P. jezoensis preferes areas with organic soils and abundant water such as areas around stumps. Also, occurrences of P. jezoensis stands were analyzed through annual mean radial growth of the trees. And the results showed that the growth naturally or artificially occurred approximately on the years 1854, 1915, 1918, 1993 and 2002 years. Most of the gap-makers were classified as standing dead type with 23 individuals (45.1%).
