  • The aim of this study was to evaluate artificial fish shelter, which was known to increase prey survival and expand habitat space to improve species diversity and fish communities in a freshwater ecosystem. The experiment was performed at an outdoor test-bed for three months from 2011 by comparing the responses to adjustments in the volume of the artificial patch (juvenile fish shelter, JFS) in the control and experimental groups. Analysis of the environmental conditions over two periods (Period1 ~ 2) showed minor differences in the physichemical characteristics of water quality, phytoplankton, and zooplankton biomass, thus, allowing comparative analysis of feeding ecology. However, high water temperature conditions in Period1 ($25.6{\pm}2.0^{\circ}C$), affected the predation activity of the piscivorous fishes, Coreoperca herzi (C. herzi, size $89{\pm}4mm$). Survival rates of the prey fishes, Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (R. oxycephalus, size $29{\pm}1mm$), improved as the patch volume increased and were higher than those of the control group by 35.9 ~ 46.7%. Analysis showed that JFS reduced the chances of predator-prey encounter, and thereby minimized prey vulnerability.

  • Zooplankton is essential biological assemblage in understanding the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems, since it plays as a linkage between primary producers and higher trophic level organisms such as fish. Although zooplankton has planktonic characteristics, the sampling and treatment methods for its community analyses are more complicated and variable compared with phytoplankton due to its high diversity in body size and species-specific depth selection behaviors. In the present paper, we reviewed representative classical methods for field sampling and treatments of freshwater zooplankton in relation with quantification of its community structure, and suggested appropriate methods depending on various research objectives.

  • A limnological survey was conducted in a reservoir, Lake Hoengsung located in Kangwondo, Korea, from July 2000 to September 2001 on the monthly basis. Phosphorus loading from the watershed was estimated by measuring total phosphorus concentration in the main tributary. Secchi disc transparency, epilimnetic (0-5 m) turbidity, chlorophyll a (Chl-a), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen(TN) and silica concentration were in the range of 0.9-3.5 m, 0.1-8.5 NTU, 0.3-32.4 mgChl $m^{-3}$, 5-46 mgP $m^{-3}$, 0.83-3.55 mgN $L^{-1}$ and 0.5-9.6 mgSi $L^{-1}$, respectively. Green algae and cyanobacteria dominated phytoplankton community in warm seasons, from July through October, 2000. In July a green alga (Scenedesmus sp.) was dominant with a maximum cell density of 10,480 cells mL. Cyanobacteria (Microcystics sp.) dominated in August and September with cell density of 3,492 and 295 cells mL ,respectively. Species diversity of phytoplankton was highest (2.22) in July. The trophic state of the reservoir can be classified as eutrophic on the basis of TP, Chl-a, and Secchi disc transparency. Because TP concentration was high in flood period, most of phosphorus loading was concentrated in rainy season. TP loading was calculated by multiplying TP and flow rate. The dam managing company measured inflow rate of the reservoir daily, while TP was measured by weekly surveys. TP of unmeasured days was estimated from the empirical relationship of TP and the flow rate of the main tributary; $TP=5.59Q^{0.45}\;(R^2=0.47)$. Annual TP loading was calculated to be 4.45 tP $yr^{-1}$, and the areal P loading was 0.77 gP $m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ which is similar to the critical P loading for eutrophication by Vollenweider's phosphorus model, 0.72 gP $m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$.

  • A seasonal characteristic of marine environment and fish assemblages in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were determined using samples collected by a trammel net in from 2012 to 2013. Annual mean temperature and salinity were $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.7psu (2012) and $18.8^{\circ}C$, 33.8psu (2013) which shows stable water mass. nutrient concentrations represent that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) ranged from 0.030 to 0.217mg/L, dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) from 0.002 to 0.010mg/L, and silicate ($SiO_2$) from 0.096 to 0.292mg/L. Chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton ranged from 0.905 to $1.125{\mu}g/L$ were appeared the highest in summer and the lowest in winter. Suspended Solid(SS) concentrations ranged from 1.200 to 2.100mg/L (mean, 1.634mg/L) were appeared the highest in autumn and the lowest in spring. During the survey period, a total of 83 species (48 families and 12 orders) of fishes were identified, Perciformes and Scorpaeniformes accounted for 63.9% of the total number. The number of species was higher in summer than in winter, showing a peak in summer at 57 species and a low in winter at 47 species. The number of individuals and the biomass peaked in summer at 694 individuals and 151.9kg, and were the lowest in autumn at 466 individuals and 106.5kg. The diversity index, evenness index and richness index were appeared 2.92~3.14, 0.75~0.83 and 7.06~8.56 at each stations. the dominance index were appeared highest in spring and summer, were appeared the lowest in winter and autumn. The Filefish (Stephanolepis cirrhifer), Bluestriped angelfish (Chaetodontoplus septentrionalis), Marbled rockfish (Sebastiscus marmoratus), Rabbit fish (Siganus fuscescens), Blackfin sweeper (Pempheris japonica) were dominant species, which occurred abundantly during the entire survey period. The subtropical fishes were identified total of 41 species (49.4%) and the number of species was higher in summer at 29 (50.9%) species and a low in winter at 20 (42.6%) species. The dominant species of subtropical fishes were appeared Bluestriped angelfish, Blackfin sweeper, Rabbit fish, Scarbreast tuskfish (Choerodon azurio), Ballonfish (Diodon holocanthus), Flagfish (Goniistius zonatus), Blue-spotted boxfish (Ostracion immaculatus) in study sites. The subtropical fishes of species, individual and biomass showed significant correlation with environmental factors (Chlorophyll a, DIN, DIP, $SiO_2$) in almost all sampling sites.

  • The Cat Ba Islands in Hai Phong City, northern Vietnam, consist of a large limestone island with a maximum height of 322 m above sea level and 366 small limestone islets with a total area of about $180\;km^2$. The islands are relicts of karst limestone mountains that became submerged during the Holocene transgression 7000 - 8000 year ago. The combination of the longtime karst process and recent marine processes in the monsoonal tropical zone has created a very diversity landscape on the Cat Ba Islands that can be divided into 3 habitat types with 16 forms. The first habitat type is the karst mountains and hills, including karst mountains and hills, karst valleys and dolines, karst lakes, karst caves, and old marine terraces. The second habitat type is the limestone island coast, including beaches, mangrove marshes, tidal flats, rocky coasts, marine notch caves, marine karst lakes, and bights. The third habitat type is karst plains submerged by the sea, including karst cones (fengcong) and towers (fengling), bedrock exposed on the seabed, sandy mud seabed, and submerged channels. Like the landscape, the biodiversity is also high in ecosystems composed of scrub cover - bare hills, rainy tropical forests, paddy fields and gardens, swamps, caves, beaches, mangrove forests, tidal flats, rocky coasts, marine krast lakes, coral reefs, hard bottoms, seagrass beds and soft bottoms. The ecosystems on the Cat Ba Islands that support very high species biodiversity include tropical evergreen rainforests, soft bottoms; coral reefs, mangrove forests, and marine karst lakes. A total of 2,380 species have been recorded in the Cat Ba Islands, included 741 species of terrestrial plants; 282 species of terrestrial animals; 30 species of mangrove plants; 287 species of phytoplankton; 79 species of seaweed; 79 species of zooplankton; 196 species of marine fishes; 154 species of corals; and 538 species of zoobenthos. Many of these species are listed in the Red Book of Vietnam as endangered species, included the white-headed or Cat Ba langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus), a famous endemic species. Human activities have resulted in significantly changes to the landscape end ecosytems of the Cat Ba islands; however, many natural aspects of the islandsd have been preserved. For this reason, the Cat Ba Islands were recognized as a Biological Reserved Area by UNESCO in 2004.

  • Both long period of summer drought and unusual high water temperature in 1988 caused the harmfull effect to the aquacultural organisms in south coast of Korea. One of those was the mass mortality of arkshell seedlings in Jinhae Bay. The purpose of this study was to verify the effects of environmental factors on arkshell seedlings by investigating not only water quality and food organisms in culturing grounds, but also meteorological conditions. Water temperature in November was higher at $2.0^{\circ}C$ than mean water temperature and the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen and N/P ratio were $0.38{\mu}g-at/l,$ 0.98, respectively which indicated the exhaustion of nutrients, especially nitrogen in the study area. In analysis of phytoplankton population structure, species diversity index(H) , equitability-index(e), species richness $index(d_1)$ were low, but dominance $index({\delta}_2)$ was high at the value of 98.4 and dominant species was Nitzschia pungens. In conclusion, it seems that mass .mortality of arkshell seedlings in November was resulted from the metabolism disorder with poor food organism under the unstable marine environment.

  • Euglenoids occurring in freshwaters are indicator organisms to be used for assessing water quality and applying to environmental education. One hundred sixty eight taxa of euglenoids belonging to three orders, four families and nine genera occur in various waters, especially in eutrophicated and polluted places in Korea. Members of Euglena and Strombomonas are abundant in urban drainages and old ponds, and those of Trachelomonas, Phacus, and Lepocinclis often occur in stagnant waters such as natural wetlands and old swamps. Population size of some euglenoids is significantly correlated to nitrogenous nutrients. Euglena caudata, E. doses, E. ehrenbergii, E. haemichromata, E. geniculata, E. viridis, Lepocinclis ovum, Strombomonas urceolata, Phacus trypanon, Trachelomonas hispida, and T volvocina cells in Korea bloomed in winter and spring, when other phytoplanktonic algae greatly decrease. Blooming of euglenoids indicates tolerance to pollutants and positive selection as a result of competition with other phytoplankton species. We developed a web site on green euglenoids (Yahoo. com: Science/ Biology/ Botany/ Phycology/ Biology of Green Euglenoids), which may be use d for cyber education of water environment. We also presented a method for assessing water quality using diversity and population size of euglenoids, which is considered to be suitable for environmental education of polluted waters.

  • Bloom-forming toxic cyanobacteria Microcystis spp. are common in the summer season in temperate freshwater ecosystems. Often, it leads to the degradation of water quality and affects the quality of drinking water. In a previous study, NQ (naphthoquinone) compounds were shown to be effective, selective, and ecologically safe algicides for Microcystis spp. blooms. To analyze the superiority of developed NQ derivatives, we conducted a microcosm experiment using clay, which is frequently used in South Korea. Similar to previous studies, the NQ 40 and NQ 2-0 compounds showed high algicidal activities of 99.9% and 99.6%, respectively, on Microcystis spp. at low concentrations (≥1 μM) and enhanced phytoplankton species diversity. However, when treated with clay, a temporary algicidal effect was seen at the beginning of the experiment that gradually increased at the end. In addition, treatment with the NQ compounds did not affect either the abiotic or biological factors, and similar trends were observed with the control. These results showed that the NQ 2-0 compound was more effective, with no ecosystem disturbance, and more economical than the currently used clay. These results suggest that NQ 2-0 compound could be a selective, economically and ecologically safe algicide to mitigate harmful cyanobacterial blooms in the field.

  • Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes was used to compare the community structures of free-living and aggregated bacteria at thawing period in Lake Baikal. Targeted groups were Eubacteria, $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$- proteobacteria groups, Cytophaga-Flavobacterium group and Planctomycetales. Total bacterial numbers of free-living bacteria were ranged from $0.2{\times}10^6\cells{\cdot}ml^-1$ to $3.2{\times}10^6\cells{\cdot}ml^-1$, which were decreasing with depth, while the aggregated bacterial numbers were dramatically increasing from $0.4{\times}10^4 to 3.3{\times}10^4 \cells{\cdot}ml^-1$ with depth. The ratios of EUB probe binding cells to DAPI counts were ranged from 52.3 to 74.1% in free-living bacteria, and from 39.6 to 66.7% in the aggregated bacteria, respectively. Community structures of the aggregated bacteria were very different from each free-living bacteria at every depth. At 25 m depth, where the chlorophyll a concentration was highest, both structures were quite different from those of surface layers, rendering the fact that the community structures might be affected by phytoplankton. The vertical profile of community structure of aggregated bacteria is particular. The proportion of $\beta$-proteobacteria group was increasing with depth and it was 51.8% at 100 m, but the dominant group was $\gamma$-pro-teobacteria group at 250 m. Taken together, the biodiversity and succession of aggregated bacteria are quite different from free-living bacteria.

  • As part of study on the microbial food web in the southern Jeju Island of Korea, Planktonic tintinnids and aloricate oligotrichs were investigated from July 1998 to June 2000 to understand seasonal variation and water mass indication with environmental factors. 39 species of tintinnids were identified representing 1 order, 11 families, 20 genera. Tintinnid abundance ranged from 100 to 5,400 cells.1$^{-1}$ (mean 314 cells.1$^{-1}$ ), and oceanic species were mainly dominant in fall and winter season, while neritic species were a little pre- dominant in spring and summer season. 15 species of aloricate oligotrichs were identified representing 1 order, 5 families, 7 genera, and many belonged to genus Strombidium which was most abundant and most frequently occurred in many months. Abundance of aloricate oligotrichs ranged from 140 to 21,000 cells.1$^{-1}$ (mean 2,356 cells.1$^{-1}$ ). Species diversity and standing crops of tintinnids were quite different according to seasons, but few seasonal variations were detected in aloricate oligotrichs. In terms of water mass indication tintinnids represented obvious characteristics which were affected by marine environmental factors, but alor- icate oligotrichs had no such apparent indication as tintinnids. Ciliates were more abundant and more diverse in inshore than in offshore station. Total carbon biomass of ciliates ranged from 0.01 to 136.06 $\mu\textrm{g}$C.1$^{-1}$ (mean 5.01 $\mu\textrm{g}$C.1$^{-1}$ ). The carbon biomass, however, did not coincided with seasonal variations of abun- dance Vertical profiles of mean abundance of both tintinnids and aloricate oligotrichs were similar, and had same trend as those of mean chlorophyll o concentration. It suggests that phytoplankton and ciliates reflected the prey-predator relationship in the study area.
