Physicochemical environments and phytoplankton community in the nakdong river middle basin were investigated during a period of 1 year from Nov. 1993 to Oct. 1994. The ranges of Physicochemical environment factors in the nakdong river middle basin were $3.6~27.4{\circ}C$ for temperature, 7.1~9.3 for pH, $7.1~12.7mg/{\ell}$for DO, $0.7~2.1mg/{\ell}$ for BOD, $31~52mg/{\ell}$ for alkalinity, $2.101~3.3mg/{\ell}$ for T-N, $0.052~0.099mg/{\ell}$ for T-p, $5.4~92.3mg/m^{3}$ for chlorophyll-a. The number of Phytoplankton was lowest in Jan. that is, 244ce11s/ml and that was highest in Sep. 1201 cells/ml. The increase of dominant genera were correlated with the total nomber of phytoplanktons. Bacillariaceae, chlorophyceae, cyanophyceae, and euglenophlrceae were to 74.5%, 20%, 3.5%, and 2.2% respectively. Bacillariaceae were abundant during all the year round except for Jun, Jul, Aug. Chlorophyceae were plentiful in Jun, Jul, Aug. Tase-and odor-causing algae and filter clogging algae were 72% in Nov. and 93.5% in Jun. They were abundant all the year round except for winter, so they influenced on the treatment of tap water system. They belong to the general asterionella, cyclotella, melosira, nitzschia of bacillariaceae and actinastrum, pediastrum of chlorophyceae. Dominace index was low in winter and high in umber. Diversity index and equitability index were low in summer and high in winter. Therefore, the structure of phytoplankton community of the nakdong river middle basin was different form season to season.
The seasonal changes in phytoplankton species composition, standing crops, dominant species, species diversity and physico-chemical characteristics in the Unmun dam were studied, from August, 2009 to April, 2010. The phytoplanktons of a total of 121 taxa were identified, the composition of phytoplankton community was characterized by a green algae and diatoms, and the quantity composition of standing crops was dominated by diatoms and dinophyceae. The diatoms Aulacoseria granulata and blue-green alga Anabaena planktonica in Summer, Peridinium voltzii in Autumn and Asterionella formosa in Winter to Spring were, especially, prominent. The seasonal changes of the biomass varied from 578 cells $mL^{-1}$ to 12,938 cells $mL^{-1}$, and the maximum algal density was observed in April, Asterionells formosa contributed to 88% of the total cell numbers. The species diversity and richness were highest during autumn, and dominance index was highest in the spring season.
The short-term variations of the mesozooplankton community structure were investigated in Gamak Bay during summer season, 2006. The study was based on a comprehensive survey constituting from 12 stations on June 19, July 28, August 4, and August 29, respectively. Mean of temperature and chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations in the surface layer were significantly higher than those in bottom layer, and those concentrations were significantly higher in the inner bay than those in the outer bay. A total of 40 taxa including 19 copepods were observed in Gamak Bay during summer season. Mean abundance of total mesozooplankton varied from 1,859 to 26,111 indiv. $m^{-3}$. The dominant species were Noctiluca scintillans, Penilia avirostris, Evadne tergestina, Paracalanus parvus s. 1., Acartia omorii and Cirriped nauplii and cyprii in Gamak Bay, and they contributed 90% of mean abundance of total mesozooplankton. Noctiluca scintillans was high after the rainfall. Cluster analysis showed that the mesozooplankton community could be divided into 4 distinct groups, indicating rapid change of the community in the short-term of this survey. The relative contribution of each group of the N. scintillans, P. avirostris, E. tergestina, and P. parvus s. 1. showed differences during the phytoplankton bloom period. The mesozooplankton community compositions were highly associated with water temperature, and salinity in physical conditions, and food organisms affect short-term variations in mesozooplankton composition. Interestingly, protozoa N. scintillans, and Cladocera appeared to be one of the key organisms to extinguish the phytoplankton bloom. Therefore, this study suggests that N. scintillans, and Cladocera could be a key player to control the mesozooplankton community structure during summer season, 2006.

This study describes time lag responses between hydrological variables and phytoplankton biomass in a regulated river system, the lower Nakdong River in South Korea. The lower Nakdong is a typical flow-controlled lotic system, and its limnological characteristics are influenced by climatic variation such as monsoons and summer typhoons. Mean rainfall in the area during summer is about 1,200 mm, which comprises >60% of annual rainfall. Our results show that the regulation of flow in the Nakdong by multi-purpose dams from 1995 to 2004 affected phytoplankton dynamics. Diatom blooms occurred in winter, when the limited discharge allowed for proliferation of the phytoplankton community. Using multiple regression analysis, we detected significant time-delayed relationships between hydrological variables and phytoplankton biomass. These results may be useful for water resource managers, and suggest that 'smart flow' control would improve water quality in large regulated river systems of the Republic of Korea.

A study on the seasonal changes in the phytoplankton community was carried out in four aquaculture ponds of Bangladesh over a period of 16 months from August 2000 to November 2001. Out of 45 phytoplankton species identified, 30 belong to Cyanophyceae, 7 to Chlorophyceae, 5 to Bacillariophyceae and 3 to Euglenophyceae. The highest phytoplankton abundance was observed in spring followed by early autumn, summer, and the lowest was in winter. The annual succession of Cyanophyceae was characterized by spring and early autumn period dominated by Microcystis sp. Anabaena sp. and Planktolymbya sp. with Microcystis sp. as the main blue-green algae represented. Chlorophyceae was characterized by rainy season domination of Chlorella vulgaris, Pediastrum sp. and Scenedesmus denticulatus with maximum abundance of Chlorella vulgaris. Whereas Bacillariophyceae was dominant during the winter period. Navicula angusta and Cyclotella meneghiniana were the most frequently occurring species of Bacillariophyceae throughout the study period. Euglenophyceae was dominant in late autumn and Euglena sp. was the dominant species. The effect of various physicochemical water quality parameters on the seasonal distribution and succession of the above mentioned phytoplankton population as well as the interaction and eutrophication are discussed.
The water Quality and phytoplankton communities of the coastal waters of Inchon were Investigated 4 tomes from May, 1995 to January. 1996. The characteristic of the study was shallow muddy bottom onoronment with high SS concentration. The water qualities were belong to the category of I-grade in DO, II to III grade in COD and III-grade In Inorganic nutrients such as T-N and T-p. Total 136 species of shytoplankton were observed in thins study and species richness was on the decrease compared with the results of previous studies. The mean of phytoplankton species diversities was 1.93, decreased in recent years and the value in autumn was slightly higher than that in other seasons.

This study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the seasonal and regional distribution of phytoplankton communities in the Fisheries Resources Protection Area of Korea (FRPA). We investigated the phytoplankton composition, abundance and dominant species collected from five different regions (Cheonsu, Tongyeong-I, Tongyeong-II, Hansan, and Jindong) in 2016. According to the results, most environmental parameters, such as temperature, salinity and nutrients, showed statistically significant seasonal differences. Suspended particulate material (SPM) only showed a statistically significant regional difference. The mean abundance of phytoplankton ranged from 13 to $4,062cells{\cdot}ml^{-1}$, with large spatio-temporal fluctuations. In particular, the bloom of phytoplankton (>$10^3cells{\cdot}ml^{-1}$) in Cheonsu Bay occurred in April and October with Skeletonema spp. and Chaetoceros socialis being the dominant species during these two seasons, respectively. The dominant species in the FRPA were diatoms (Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Skeletonema spp., and Chaetoceros pseudocriniuts) and dinoflagellates (Scrippsiella trochoidea and Tripos furca). The seasonal distribution of phytoplankton communities showed typical characteristics of coastal waters, i.e., that diatoms usually dominated in winter and autumn, while dinoflagellates tended to dominate in spring and summer. Meanwhile, the dominance rate of diatoms in the phytoplankton community in Cheonsu Bay, which is located in a high-turbidity region, was 9~27 % greater than that of diatoms in the phytoplankton community found in the south coastal waters, which is a low turbidity region.

Phytoplankton is one of the important primary producers providing organic matter through photosynthesis in aquatic environments. In order to determine a temporal and spatial variation in primary productivity after weir construction in the Nakdong River, we investigated carbon uptake rates using in-situ $^{13}C$ labeling experiments and identified algal communities contributing to primary productivity using HPLC-CHEMTAX analysis from October to December, 2017. The primary productivity gradually decreased from fall to early winter season ($249{\sim}933mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in October, $64{\sim}536mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in November and $60{\sim}274mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in December, respectively). This is attributed to the temporally declining light intensity and the decreasing biomass and physiological activity of phytoplankton in winter. The contribution of diatoms to the phytoplankton community in the Nakdong River was approximately 63% at all the sampling sites and seasons, while the contribution of cryptophytes increased from 9% in October to 32% in November and December. The temporal changes in the primary productivity and the dominant phytoplankton species in the mid and downstream weirs of the Nakdong River was investigated for the first time, after construction of the weirs, and major environmental factors controlling the temporal variation in primary productivity and phytoplankton communities were identified in this study. We suggest that seasonal field investigations will provide further information on the major environmental factors which affect the annual variation of primary productivity and phytoplankton communities.

Phytoplankton controls marine ecosystems in terms of nutrients, photosynthetic rate, carbon cycle, etc. and the degree of its influence on the marine environment depends on their physical size. Many studies have been attempted to identify marine phytoplankton size classes using the remote sensing techniques. One of successful approach was the three-component model which estimates the chlorophyll concentrations of three phytoplankton size classes (micro-phytoplankton; >20 ㎛, nano-; 2-20 ㎛ and pico-; <2 ㎛) as a function of total chlorophyll. Here, we examined the applicability of Geostationary Ocean Colour Imager (GOCI) to the mapping of the phytoplankton size class distribution in the East Sea. A fit of the three-component model to a biomarker pigment dataset collected in the study area for some years including a large harmful algal bloom period has been carried out to derive size-fractioned chlorophyll concentration (CHL). The tuned three-component model was applied to the hourly GOCI images to identify the fractions of each phytoplankton size class for the entire CHL. Then, we investigated the distribution of phytoplankton community in terms of the size structure in the East Sea during the harmful Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms in the summer of 2013.
To investigate the community structures and the their seasonal variation of phytoplankton and zooplankton, a study was conducted at 6 selected stations during the period from April 1999 to October 2000 in the marine ranching ground off Tongyeong. One hundred ninety species of phytoplankton were identified, including 146 diatoms, 38 dinoflagellates, 4 silicoflagellates and 2 euglenophytes. Phytoplankton standing crops varied extensively by months and stations, ranging from $3.0{\times}10^4\;cells/l\;to\;1.0{\times}10^6\;cells/l.$. The dominant species varied from the vertical distribution as well as seasonal changes. In April and July 1999, Skeletonema costatum and Ceratium fusus were predominant in both the surface and the bottom water columns. Leptocylindrus danicus was the dominant species in April and June 2000, and Thalassiosira spp. were also predominant in bottom waters in June 2000. Pseudonitzschia pungens and Chaetoceros spp. were the dominant species at both surface and near bottom waters in August and October 2000, respectively. Zooplankton abundance was comparatively high in April and July in 1999, and April, June, and October in 2000, but extremely low in November 1999. The density of dominant zooplankton was higher in 2000 than in 1999. Copepods were the most predominant group except for July 1999 when the bivalve larvae showed extremely high abundance. Acartia omorii and Oithona similis were the dominant or subdominant copepod species mainly in April 2000, and June/July, while O. davisae and O. plumifera had peaks in August and October 2000. Corycaeus affinis and Paracalanus sp. also showed higher peaks in April and June (or July), even though they occurred in all sampling time. Centropages abdominalis occurred abundantly only in April 1999. Oikopleura dioica, a gelatinous zooplankton, was another important zooplankton, showing high density in all samples except in July 1999.
