  • Most of the photoperiodic responses result in a sharp contrast between development in long and short days, so that qualitative observations are quite sufficient to establish that development is under photoperiodic control, and qualitative information of this type is all that is available for many of the responses (Dring 1984). However, we need to devise some quantitative measurement of the response in order to study the physiological mechanism of photoperiodic control. We report here the quantification of photoperiodic control of erect thalli production of Sargassum muticum in different daylength regimes. (omitted)

  • In this study, basilar membrane motions and neural tuning responses are analysed with I-dimensional equations for cochlear fluid mechanics and an active cochlear model. The results are as follows. (1) The differences between basilar membrane motions in an active cochlear model and in an passive cochlear model are explained. (2) The basilar membrane motion curves and the neur'at tuning curves which are in accordance with physiological measurements ave obtained. (3) It is proved that the active mechanism makes cochlear highly frequency sensitive.

  • Cells are eliminated in a variety of physiological settings by apoptosis, a genetically encoded process of cellular suicide. Bak, a member of the Bcl-2 protein family, accelerates apoptosis by an unknown mechanism. We have found a novel cDNA encoding a 101 amino acid protein possessing a Bak-like in our full-length cDNA bank. Bak-like shares the conserved domains BHI and 2 with other proapoptotic proteins but lacks the BH3 domain. Bak-like is expressed in a wide variety of tissues. Like Bak, Bak-like gene product primarily enhances apoptotic cell death following an appropriate stimulus.

  • Salt accumulation in agricultural soils reduces the growth and productivity of crops. Although scientists have been studied the impacts of salinity on plants, the physiological mechanism of adaptation to salinity has not been well understood. Practically, salinity in irrigated soil of green and glass houses keeps increasing in Korea by the massive application of nitrogen fertilizer.(omitted)

  • Transfer RNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) play a role in various cellular processes. Accumulating evidence has revealed that tsRNAs are deeply implicated in human diseases, such as various cancers and neurological disorders, suggesting that tsRNAs should be investigated to develop novel therapeutic intervention. tsRNAs provide more complexity to the physiological role of transfer RNAs by repressing or activating protein synthesis with distinct mechanisms. Here, we highlight the detailed mechanism of tsRNA-mediated dual regulation in protein synthesis and discuss the necessity of novel sequencing technology to learn more about tsRNAs.

  • Brazilin is the phenolic compound isolated from the Caesalpinia sappan. This compound has shown a wide range of physiological properties, such as hypoglycemic, anticonvulsant, vasorelaxing, and immunomodulating effects. In this study, we have found that brazilin induced DNA strand scissions in the presence of Cu(II) and this DNA cleavages were mediated by reactive oxygen species. (omitted)

  • Estrogen is the most important endocrine hormone that has reproduction and physiological process in a number of tissues. However, an excess of estrogen can promotes the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancer. Thus the regulation of estrogen level is important a prevention of estrogen-related cancer. It has been reported that some of flavonoids could inhibit estrogen-dependent cancer. And these compounds are expected as chemopreventive agents on estrogen related disease. (omitted)

  • Proline plays a multifaceted role in protein synthesis, redox balance, cell fate regulation, brain development, and other cellular and physiological processes. Here, we focus our review on proline metabolism in neurons, highlighting the role of dysregulated proline metabolism in neuronal dysfunction and consequently neurological and psychiatric disorders. We will discuss the association between genetic and protein function of enzymes in the proline pathway and the development of neurological and psychiatric disorders. We will conclude with a potential mechanism of proline metabolism in neuronal function and mental health.

  • Recently, much attention has been paid to the physiological functions of flavonoids associated with their antioxidant properties. However, there was a lack of information on the molecular mechanism at which flavonoids play the antioxidative role. We have already studied on the oxidation of quercetin with hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite in alcoholic aqueous solution and determined the oxidation products. Through the structural analysis of the oxidation products, it was clarified that the hydroxyl group at C-3 in the C ring plays the important role in the antioxidative action of quercetin. Successively, rutin and (+)-catechin were oxidized with sodium hypochlorite and their mono- and di-chlorinated derivatives were obtained. These facts indicate that these flavonoids can directly scavenge hypochlorous acid and the active site in this scavenging reaction is not the hydroxyl group at C-3.
