  • Thirty farmers, representing three major deer counties in Kyung-Kee province and 50 farmers scattered in Chung-Buk province were interviewed to determine the current status of the Korean deer industry. Items surveyed were general information, farmed deer breeds. farm facilities, feeding and nutrition, hygiene and disorder incidence, velvetting, income sources, products and their sale, management problems and herd size control. The 888 deer farmed in Kyung-Kee province included spotted deer (Cervus nippon. 69.4%), red deer (Cervus elaphus, 6.1%), wapiti (Cervus elaphus canadensis, 12.2%), spotted $\times$ red deer hybrids (6.2%), red deer $\times$ wapiti hybrids (4.6%). and fallow deer (Dama dama, 1.5%). Poor information on feeding was evidenced by wide variation among farms of daily feed supply and ratios of forage to concentrate, and poor nutritional considerations according to physiological status of deer. Hygiene needed more attention. The incidence of diseases and disorders was high: enteritis (73.3% in Kyung-Kee province), fractures (60.0%), and dystocia (56.7%). The major source of farm income was velvet antler and its blood. To improve productive efficiency, attention should be given to improving farm facilities, simplified product marketing, developing standard feeding system, and economic grazing system.

  • The main purpose of this study was to identify the effects of integrated stress management program on the stress symptoms of psychophysiological patients. especially patients with peptic ulcer. The study employed a quasi-experimental design using two different experimental groups. The samples in the integrated stress management program participated in autogenic training with biofeedback. discussions on effective coping method. cognitive. behavioral, and emotional management. They were also provided with an educational booklet on stress management and an tape on progressive muscie relaxation. Each session lasted one hour and the program consisted of seven sessions over four weeks. The other group was only given an tape on progressive muscle relaxation. The data were collected from May 20 to september 25, 1996. A total 47 patients from one university hospital located in Seoul participated, experiment group 1(integrated stress management training) had 23 subjects and experiment group 2(progressive muscle relaxation training) had 24 subjects. The effects of these programs were measured by the stress symptom scale developed by Kogan(1991) which was translated by Lee(1992) and the healing status of the ulcer evaluated by a physician. The data were analyzed using Chi-square test, t- test, ANOVA, repeated measure ANOVA. The result are as follows : 1. The integrated stress management group reported a significantly lower stress symptom score than the group given the progressive muscle relaxation only. 2. The integrated stress management group showed a significantly improved ulcer status as compared to the group given a progressive muscle relaxation only. In conclusion, it was found that the integrated stress management program was more effective in decreasing self-reported stress and physiological symptoms among patients with peptic ulcer as compared to the progressive muscle relaxation group. Based on this finding, the following suggestions can be made. 1. It is necessary to broaden the scope of nursing practice for psychophysiological patients so nurses can include stress management as part of patient care. 2. It is necessary to develop stress management program for other patients whose symptoms are known to be related to stress. 3. It is necessary to replicated this study with a larger sample in different settings.

  • Spongy Alphonso mangoes were found to be infected with Staphylococcus bacteria. A Gram positive Staphylococcus strain was isolated from spongy pulp and identified from CABI Bioscience, UK, by partial 16S rDNA sequence analysis and by morphological and biochemical characterization through IMTECH, Chandigarh, India. Although identification by both of these methods indicated the organism belonged to same genus, different species names were given. Changes in total phenolics, reducing, and non-reducing sugars, respiration rate, total carotenoids, peroxidase(POX), and catalase activities were monitored during ripening of these fruits. The climacteric rise in spongy fruits was marked by an increase in respiration rate and a decrease in sugar content. Total phenolics content increased in spongy fruits as compared to ripe non-spongy fruits. Development of corky white tissue in spongy fruits was associated with about a 2.5-fold reduction in total carotenoids and a concomitant increase in lipoxygenase-mediated, $\beta$-carotene co-oxidation. A marked decrease in soluble protein content and about a 1.5-fold increase in POX activity was observed. Maximum POX activity was confined to 50-70%$(NH_4)_2SO_4$ fraction. The intense dark bands visible after POX specific substrate staining of the Native gel indicated a high expression of isoenzymes of POX in spongy fruits. Similarly, changes in levels of catalase activity were also observed in spongy fruits. The results suggest that infection of Alphonso mangoes with Staphylococcus bacteria affects the normal ripening processes of the fruit interfering with the carbohydrate and carotenoid metabolism. Also, the studies indicate the expression of POX and catalase enzymes as a plant defense response to microbial invasion.

  • The development of blood ionic changes could be precipitated in acid-base disorder and subsequent treatment. As technology for detecting circulating ionized $Mg^{2+}$ (the most interesting form with respect to physiological and biological properties) is now available in veterinary clinical medicine. This present study investigated the changes of whole blood ionized $Mg^{2+}$ correlated with acute metabolic and respiratory alkalosis in rodent model. Metabolic alkalosis was induced by intravenous infusion with $NaHCO_3$ and mechanical hyperventilation was applied for respiratory alkalosis. We founded that the blood ionized $Mg^{2+}$ could be reversibly decreased by the $NaHCO_3$-induced acute metabolic alkalosis but irreversibly increased by the mechanical hyperventilation-induced respiratory acidosis and respiratory acidosis. We suggested that the potential change in blood suggested that the potential change in blood ionized $Mg^{2+}$ should be counted in treatment of acid-base disorders.

  • Excluding an operation remedy about an example of Traumatic Cervical Stenosis patient, by doing pattern identification such as blood stagnation in hospitalization for the early days and such as the stagnation of Oi for the middle days and such as Eum deficiency of liver and kidney for the last. We have done treatment by being based on method of therapy to promote blood flow to remove blood stasis and to promote the normal flow of Oi and to nourish the liver and the kidney. In result, we had remarkable conclusion and considered that we had to treat a patient like that appropriately by distinguishing & making a diagnosis correctly from now on. If we apply clinically by thinking of Oriental Medicine through more example of symptoms, we have considered that it will serve as a momentum that we can sympathize with the excellency of Oriental Medicine. In the future, we have considered that have to be necessary to make more researches and reports upon it.

  • This study was conducted to response the photosynthetic rate and anatomical characters in one year ginseng plant against the light transmission ratio (10%, 20% and 30% in natural light) under shading materials by polyethylene (PE) net. The chlorophyll content and the photosynthesis of ginseng according to the light transmissivity showed decreasing trend as the light transmission ratio increased. At the higher light transmission ratio condition, leaves showed the chlorosis due to the physiological disorder, stems formed hypodermis, and phloem development inside the vascular tissue shrunk remarkably. Also, roots showed the epidermis destruction and less cambium development at the higher light intensity. The root weight also decreased as the light transmission ratio increased.

  • An expert system, Watermelon Disease Expert System (WDES), was developed in this study using HCLIPS which allows input and output in Korean. WDES could diagnose 8 diseases and 1 physiological disorder frequently occurring on watermelons grown in greenhouses. The knowledge base of WDES consisted of 35 ‘IF -THEN ’rules and the forward chaining was used to make inferences. Help menu providing information on the nature of questions in text and image forms was included for users to answer questions without difficulty. Watermelon growers and researchers have validated the system and proved possibility of its practical use. In order to facilitate the practical use of WDES by watermelon growers, the knowledge base of WDES needs to be improved by including more detailed information on various diseases and disorders and restructuring rule bases.
