This paper has shown the experimental results about the physiological activities of water-, ethanol-, ethyl acetate-soluble fractions from ethanolic extracts of leaves, stems and roots of Cudrania tricuspidata on the skin, which has been used for a long time as a traditional herb medicine in Korea and China. The effects of these fractions on the secretion of nitric oxide and cytokines from macrophage(RAW 264.7 cell) exhibited that the ethyl acetate and water fractions from leaves inhibited the release of nitric oxide, all fractions inhibited thoses of inflammatory cytokine $IL-1{\alpha}$, and the ethyl acetate fractions of leaves, stems and roots inhibited thoses of inflammatory cytokine IL-6. The only ethylacetate fraction of leaves demonstrated significantly the reduction of melanin synthesis in melanoma cells. In order to evaluate the efficacy of collagen synthesis, the treatment with extracts on the human normal fibroblast cell(CCD-986sk cell) resulted in finding that the water fractions of leaves, stems and roots and the ethanol fractions of leaves and stems showed the increased synthesis of collagen.

Phenolic compounds, physiological properties, and digestive enzyme inhibitory effect of 70% ethanol extracts from Aster scaber with different extraction methods (stirrer extraction, SE; reflux extraction, RE; autoclave extraction, AE; low temperature high pressure extraction, LTPE; ultrasonification extraction, USE) were investigated. Total polyphenols and flavonoids contents in LTPE were significantly higher than those of other extracts. The amount of substances related to cynarin (1,3-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid) was highest in USE (34.34 mg/g), followed by LTPE (33.83 mg/g), RE (32.27 mg/g), AE (25.40 mg/g), and SE (18.17 mg/g). Chlorogenic acid (5-O-caffeoylquinic acid) and astragalin (kaempferol-3-O-glucopyranoside) were highest in AE and LTPE, respectively. Xanthine oxidase, angiotensin- I converting enzyme, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and acetylcholin esterase inhibitory activities of LTPE and USE at a concentration of 50 mg% (w/v) were somewhat higher than those of other extracts. The ${\alpha}$-amylase, ${\alpha}$-glucosidase, trypsin and lipase activities showed the same tendency as physiological properties (concentration of 500 mg%, w/v). Additionally, there was significantly higher or slightly lower inhibitory activity compared to the control group. These results suggest that extracts from Aster scaber have potential to act as functional materials, and LTPE and USE are superior for the enhancement of biological activity.

This study was carried out to investigate the physiological activities of the ethanol extracts from 11 strains of Flammulina velutipes. In addition, the ${\beta}$-glucan and polyphenol contents were also measured. The contents of polyphenol and ${\beta}$-glucan of Flammulina velutipes were found to be more than 100 mg% and 20%, respectively, one of which showed 244.74 mg% and 27.37%, respectively. Further, The highest inhibitory activities on DPPH radical, ${\alpha}$-amyloglucosidase activity and nitric oxide production were 91.74%, 63.57% and 61.44%, respectively. However, ethanol extracts from all the strains have little effects on Angiotensin I converting enzyme(ACE)-inhibitory effects. Finally, the highest cytotoxic activities of ethanol extracts from all the strains on A549 and HT-29 cell were 76.07% and 67.05%, respectively.

This study was conducted to investigate the physiological activities of extracts from Suaeda japonica harvested in different season for its possibility as a functional material in food or cosmetic composition. The total mineral content of S. japonica harvested in summer was about 89.8 g/kg, and it comprised a little more content than one in winter (86.7 g/kg). The Na content of S. japonica did not show a remarkable contrast on harvest season whereas the K and Ca contents of summer were decreased to half or increased to double in winter. In addition, the antioxidative activity of each extract from S. japonica changed depending on harvest season. For S. japonica harvested in summer, the ethyl acetate extract showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity, but in winter the butanol extract fraction had the highest value. However, FRAP values were the highest in butanol extracts from S. japonica harvested in summer and winter. Total phenolic contents in the extracts were in proportion to the antioxidative activities. From the tyrosinase inhibition assay and melanogenesis with B16BL6, the hexane extracts from both seasons had shown the highest whitening effects. These results suggest that the extraction methods should be optimized depending on harvest season to utilize the S. japonica as functional component source.
This study was performed to confirm the physicochemical properties and physiological activities according to cultivar and parts of Ulsan sweet persimmons. The proximate composition of the sweet persimmons was moisture $77.68{\sim}84.65%$, crude ash $0.3{\sim}0.6$, crude fat $0.29{\sim}0.39$ and crude protein $0.52{\sim}0.61%$. Confirmed organic acids and free sugars in sweet persimmons were malic, citric, succinic, and fumaric acids, along with fructose, glucose and sucrose. The major fatty acids were linolenic, vaccenic and palmitic acids. Also, K is the highest mineral in sweet persimmons that accounts for the majority of mineral, more than 60% as $84.9{\sim}103.7mg%$. Contents of vitamin C, total phenolic compounds and flavonoids were the highest in Fuyu peel as 139.91, 169.36 and 60.79mg%, respectively, Electron donating ability and xanthine oxidase inhibition were the highest in Fuyu peel as $30.6{\sim}91.2$ and $26.3{\sim}91.9mg%$, respectively. Nitrite scavenging activity was higher in peel than flesh as $51.0{\sim}76.4mg%$ with slight difference depending on cultivar.
The physiological properties of extracts from Hizikia fusiforme with different extraction methods (hot water extraction, autoclave extraction and high pressure extraction) were investigated. The amounts of substances related to polyphenol and flavonoids contents were the highest in autoclave extract (30.51 mg/g and 4.78 mg/g, respectively). The DPPH radical scavenging activity was the highest in the autoclave extract (81.80%) at the 5 mg/mL. Autoclave extract exhibited the strongest ABTS radical scavenging activity and reducing power among the three extraction methods. However, ferrous ion chelating, TBA reactive substances and xanthine oxidase inhibition activity of high pressure extract were higher than those of the other extracts. Additionally, the tyrosinase and elastase inhibition activities of high pressure extract with a concentration of 1 mg/mL were higher than those of the other extracts. These results suggest that extracts of Hizikia fusiforme have a potential to act as functional materials, and autoclave and high pressure extractions are superior to hot water extraction for enhancement of the biological activity.

Physiological activities, including antioxidant activity, were examined in water and 80% ethanol extracts of leaf, stem, and root parts of Welsh onion. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were highest in both extracts of leaf and lowest in those of stem among parts of Welsh onion. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was highest in root among 80% ethanol extracts and in leaf among water extracts. 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging activity and reducing power were the highest in both extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Inhibitory activities against lipase in both extracts and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase in water extract were also highest in Welsh onion leaf. Alcohol dehydrogenase promoting activity was also highest in extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Both leaf and water extracts of stem only exhibited antimicrobial effects on Gram (-) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This result implies that leaf is the most optimal part of Welsh onion as functional material, although stem and root parts of Welsh onion also exhibited physiological activity, including antioxidant activity.
Thinned fruits, apple, pear and peach were investigated into chemical components and physiological activities. On proximate compositions, crude protein, crude fat and ash of thinned fruits were higher than those of ripe fruits, showing lower carbohydrate in thinned fruits. The contents of inorganic substance were Ca, Mg, P, Na, K and B in order. On heavy metals, As, Cd, Cr and Hg were not detected and Ge, Mo, Ni and Pb were trace. Organic acid in thinned apple and peach were detected as tartaric acid, citric acid, malic acid and succinic acid, but thinned pear did not contain citric acid. Free sugars in thinned pear and peach were composed of glucose, fructose and sucrose but sucrose was not detected in thinned apple. Contents of insoluble dietary fiber in thinned fruits were higher than soluble dietary fiber. The thinned apple extracts showed high antioxidant activity. Nitrite scavenging activity of thinned apple and pear extracts were 71∼80 e/o and 61∼63% at pH 1.2, respectively. Tyrosinase inhibitory activity of thinned pear extracts was 61.0∼89.4 %, however peach extinct showed no activity.
The purpose of this study was to determine antioxidant and physiological activities of water and 70% ethanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri by extraction methods. The yield of water and ethanol extracts from Ligularia fischeri was 15.23% and 17.45%, respectively. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri (LEE) were $17.17{\pm}4.38mg/g$, $35.06{\pm}6.69mg/g$, respectively. The electron donating ability and SOD like activity, and ABTS radical ability of all Ligularia fischeri extracts were increased in a dose dependent manner, and those was the highest in LEE. Nitrite scavenging ability was higher in pH 1.2 than that in pH 3.0, and ethanol extract showed higher ability in pH 1.2 and 3.0. The xanthine oxidase and inhibition effect of all Ligularia fischeri extracts on tyrosinase were dose-dependently increased, and those was the highest in ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri. Reducing power was 1.2 at extract concentration $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ in water and ethanol extracts of Ligularia fischeri and the highest in water extract of Ligularia fischeri at concentration of $62.5-500{\mu}g/mL$. These results may contribute to development of processed food and health functional food with Ligularia fischeri.
The effect of the extraction solvent on the physiological properties of the peel of the Korean pear (Pyrus pyrifolia cv. Niitaka) was evaluated. The total phenol content was highest in the 80%(wt) methanol extract, whereas flavonoid content was highest in the 80% ethanol extract. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging abilities, and their reducing power. The water and 80% methanol extracts of the pear peel had highest DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities, and reducing power, respectively. The inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase was highest in the 80% methanol extract, and alcohol dehydrogenase activity was highest in the water extract. All three extracts had similar antimicrobial activity. Because water, 80% ethanol, and 80% methanol extracts exhibited high activities in different assays of physiological properties, each solvent could be used for specific purposes.
